Cannon Beach Library Hosts ‘Blankets’ Graphic Novelist Craig Thompson

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Cartoonist and graphic novel author Craig Thompson will discuss his award-winning work during a NW Authors Series presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. The hybrid program will be offered in person at the Cannon Beach Library and online, available on the library’s website, at cannonbeachlibrary.org. Thompson illustrated and wrote the multiple award-winning autobiography, Blankets, which was named Time Magazine’s No. 1 graphic novel in 2003. Published in 20 languages, the memoir tells the story of a young man finding a first love and emerging from a rigorous fundamentalist Christian childhood with the confidence to express his own voice. The Guardian newspaper said of Blankets: “Quaint, meditative and sometimes dreamy, Blankets will take you straight back to your first kiss.” Thompson’s later books, Carnet de Voyage, Habibi and Space Dumplins, also were award winners. The artwork he created for the Menomena album Friend and Foe received a Grammy nomination for best recording package. Thompson was born in Michigan in 1975, and grew up in a rural farming community in central Wisconsin. As a child, he enjoyed the Sunday newspaper comics and comic books. He drew a comic strip for the college newspaper while attending the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County. In 1997, Thompson moved to Portland, where he worked for Dark Horse Comics until he turned his attention to his own work. His first graphic novel was the semi-autobiographic Good-bye, Chunky Rice, which also won several awards. The NW Authors Series hosts Pacific Northwest authors from September through May. The committee also sponsors the Writers Read Celebration, featuring writers who read original stories, essays, poems, etc. on a specific theme. The next Writers Read Celebration will be on March 22.

SCULPTURES ARE HIDING IN YOUR GARDEN!

Submitted By: ketzel.levine@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
If you’re a gardener, take a minute after reading this to take a good look at your garden and ask yourself this: how do my small trees and big shrubs add to the overall aesthetic of this space?

Some guesses here: they add weight, size, bulk; they flowered a few months back; their leaves are turning color; they feed wildlife; they distract from the neighbor’s house.

All those are important. Absolutely! But if you study your favorite specimens, whether maple, dogwood, Hinoki cypress, pine, whatever, you might also start seeing inherent, powerful shapes hiding among the branches and leaves.

And once you can discern those shapes, you might then use a few sharp tools and a whole lot of know-how to release the muscular, sinewy sculptures hiding in your garden.

Are you game? ‘Cause that’s where we’re going!

Join us this Saturday, 9am-3pm, for a day-long immersion into the ART OF ADVANCED PRUNING with the Wonder Garden’s favorite pruning instructor, Maryann Lewis.

Here’s what to expect:

We’ll spend the morning at a stunning Manzanita garden with choice trees and shrubs that have grown out of scale. Through give and take with Maryann, we’ll learn step-by-step how to ‘see’ the potential shape of certain plants and strategize pruning cuts to reveal their forms.

In the afternoon we’ll be unleashed into the Wonder Garden (under supervision!) and will work in teams on selected overgrown trees to restore their scale, enhance their shape, and bump up the Wonder in the WG.

Class space is limited to provide individual attention!

LNWC Speaker Series and Board Meeting

LNWC Board Meeting and Speaker Series: Living and Working with Beavers for Salmon – Brilyn Brecka, ODFW Beaver Conservation Biologist

On April 13th, 2023 the Lower Nehalem Watershed Council will be hosting their regular board meeting and a presentation w/ Brilyn Brecka, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife North Coast Beaver Conservation Biologist.

The LNWC’s Board Meeting will start at 5 pm. The board meeting will include regular council business including reports on fiscal status, organizational health projects, and a discussion of ongoing and upcoming LNWC projects. The public is welcome to join us and learn more about how the Watershed Council operates and what we do.

Brilyn Brecka’s presentation will begin at 7 pm. Tune in to this presentation by Brilyn Brecka, a beaver biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, to learn how intertwined the lives of beavers and salmon are. For thousands of years, beavers and salmon have co-evolved, creating a relationship between the two species that generate several important benefits to salmon restoration and recovery in coastal systems. Consequently, restoration projects that focus on creating and maintaining beaver and beaver-modified habitats can have a trickle-down effect on salmon populations, not to mention other benefits to both humans and the environment.

Brilyn Brecka is the Beaver Conservation Biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in the North Coast. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, majoring in Wildlife Ecology and Management, and she integrates her passions for habitat restoration, ecosystem-based management, and wildlife into her everyday work with beavers in Oregon. In her free time, she enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, and reading.

Both the Board Meeting and this presentation will be hosted on Zoom and are free to the public. The zoom link is us02web.zoom.us/j/82002702767 or on the Faceboook event at www.facebook.com/lnwc1. You can also contact the watershed council at info@nehalemwatershed.org. A recording of this presentation will also be posted on the LNWC’s YouTube channel with our other recorded presentations. Just search for “Lower Nehalem Watershed Council” on YouTube.

Event Information: This event is FREE and open to the public. Find more information on our speaker series and the links for access on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/lnwc1).

Author Talk at the North Tillamook Library in Manzanita!

Submitted By: breezeduvall@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Come to the North Tillamook Library in Manzanita on Monday, October 9th at 4pm to meet children’s book author Stephen Bramucci!

Cloud and Leaf will be here selling copies of his latest book, “Race for the Ruby Turtle,” a children’s chapter book that takes place on the Oregon Coast!

Book Description:

“Jake Rizzi is about to spend the summer at his great-aunt’s cabin in the mossy, sodden Oregon backwoods. His parents seem to need a break from him and his ADHD. He tries not to take it personally, but isn’t sure about his aunt’s off-the-grid lifestyle and strange stories about a turtle with a ruby-colored shell.

Soon, Jake learns that the turtle is more than a myth. And thanks to a viral article online, strangers from all over the world have arrived to search for it–including a sinister animal poacher and towering twin zoologists from Sweden. Jake is sure that finding the turtle will change how people see him and his “attention issues”–but he’ll need help. Setting off with his new friend Mia, Jake must decide what matters more–personal glory? Or protecting the wonders of nature?”

We hope to see you and your families there!
