Coaster Theatre Playhouse Offers Musical Theatre Audition Workshop

Dreamed of singing on stage as part of a musical production but not sure how to prepare for the auditions? The Coaster Theatre Playhouse is offering a free musical theatre audition workshop to introduce the musical audition process.

Open to ages 12 and older, the workshop will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Coaster Theatre, 108 N. Hemlock St., Cannon Beach. More information is at coastertheatre.com or by calling the box office at 503-436-1242.

During the workshop, participants will learn a song that they can use in future musical auditions. They will also learn a movement/dance routine to understand the portion of an audition as well as cold-read from a script.

At this time all participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination at the workshop. Participants may display proof of vaccination with a physical vaccination card, a legible copy of their vaccination card or a legible digital copy of their vaccination card in addition to a matching photo ID (children under the age of 16 are not required to show ID if accompanied by a parent or guardian). Masks are optional but encouraged at the Coaster Theatre.

Opening Aug. 13 and running through Sept. 10, performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at the Coaster Theatre Playhouse.

The internationally popular board game has been turned into a fun-filled musical that brings the world’s best-known suspects to life. It invites the audience to help solve the mystery: who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room and with what weapon? Pay attention and deduce the solution from clues given throughout the evening; there are 216 possible endings!

Clue: The Musical is directed by Patrick Lathrop and features David Sweeney as Mr. Boddy, Shay Knorr as Mrs. Peacock, Bryan Lelek as Professor Plum, Toddy Adams as Miss Scarlet, Patrick Lathrop as Colonel Mustard, Cathey Ryan as Mrs. White, Bennett Hunter as Mr. Green and Joslynn Johansen as the Detective.

The production crew includes Heather Hoffman (stage manager), Kirk Valles (accompanist), Carson Schulte (accompanist), Patrick Lathrop (costumer), Mick Alderman, (set builder/lighting design) Juan Lira (set painter) and Nancy McCarthy (sound and light operator).

Tickets are $25 or $30; they can be purchased at the theatre box office (503-436-1242) or online at coastertheatre.com. The box office is open 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and open until curtain on performance days.

At this time, everyone must show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test to enter the Coaster Theatre on performance day. Face masks are optional but encouraged. The Coaster Theatre recommends visiting coastertheatre.com or contacting the box office closer to the performance for possible changes to the theatre’s COVID policy.

Openings for Two Female Writers on Wednesday Mornings

Submitted By: writingaliveworkshops@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Two Openings for Writers at Any Level of Experience

Let your voice soar on the currents of the summer wind! Join us for a brand new Wednesday Morning Writing Alive! Workshop, a place to play with the authenticity of your voice in the presence of others who love words and meaning, form and structure as much as you do! Find your flock — and fly!

Writing Alive! Workshops have been offered on the North Coast of Oregon since April 2015. Our days of meeting at The Center for Contemplative Arts came to end, and now we meet on Zoom.

I am trained to facilitate writing workshops in the style of The Amherst Method for Writers and Artists, an approach I love for its positive focus and for the extra distance it provides writers who want to delve into challenging, authentic material without getting mired in a “therapy trap.” We write to 2-4 prompts during each 2-1/2 hour weekly workshop. We include a maximum of 5 writers plus the facilitator. In this model, the facilitator keeps the process on track while also writing to the prompts and sharing her own writing, just as other participants do, keeping the hierarchy “flat” and equal. Writers choose their genre, decide whether to write “on-prompt” or “off-prompt,” always have a standing invitation to read aloud and always an option to pass. This is a setting for writers bringing works-in-progress and also for those jumping in to begin, or complete, a memoir, group of short stories or to explore writing with a workshop for the very first time.

If you are longing for a writing community filled with writers capable of offering thoughtful feedback, if you are ready to receive positive feedback for your work, if you are in search of a group of like-minded writers to hold you accountable to yourself and bring out your best, Writing Alive! Workshops is for you!

We’re just around the corner — on Zoom. (And if your niece in Olympia or your daughter in Chicago or your Mom or Grammy on Martha’s Vineyard is looking for us, please let them know how to find us! Send them this contact and we’ll take care of the rest: writingaliveworkshops@gmail.com.)

We are seeking one or two new writers for a brand new Wednesday Morning Workshop. Three writers are signed up — from Oregon, from Nova Scotia, from Washington, D.C. This workshop will definitely “make.” Let us know if you’d like to join us.

Our dates are July 27 + Aug 3, 10, 17. This particular workshop is focused for women only.

Are you ready to share the love with soul stirring, irresistible blues?

Join us on Sunday, July 31st in the park for the iconic LaRhonda Steele!

Steele began her musical journey in Jones, Oklahoma at age 13, singing her first solo in church.

She’s since become a staple of the Portland blues, gospel and soul scenes. Steele was named “Best Female Vocalist” by the Cascade Blues Association in back-to-back years of 2016-17.

Steele is also the musical director of the nonprofit Portland Interfaith Gospel Choir and Portland Center for Spiritual Living.

To Steele, music is about coming together, sharing joy.

The park is located in downtown Cannon Beach, northeast of the Chamber of Commerce at 2nd & Spruce.

Rainy Day Village Picnic and Town Hall in the Park TOMORROW

Rainy Day Village Picnic and Town Hall in the Park

Please join us TOMORROW Saturday, July 9th at 11:00 at Nehalem City Park, 12705 Hugo Street, for a Town Hall and Picnic. Let’s get together to eat, socialize, and talk about the future of Rainy Day Village. Bring a picnic and a chair or a blanket and visit with old friends and make some new ones. Treats provided! At 12:00 there will be a conversation about where Rainy Day Village can go from here.

Please RSVP to rainydayvillage@gmail.com. Please come even if you don’t RSVP!

And Save the Date: July 16th will be a follow up meeting at 2:00 at the same place: Nehalem City Park (and with more treats!) Come and help plan the future of Rainy Day Village in more detail.

Rainy Day Village (RDV) is part of the Village Movement which started in Boston over 20 years ago to create a new model for aging and ways to support older adults who desire to remain in their homes, allowing them to stay active and engaged in their communities. A local group began meeting in 2017 to discuss how this movement might support and enrich lives on the northern Oregon coast. We soon realized that rather than focus efforts on creating a local non-profit, it would be advantageous to join an existing village organization. In early 2019, RDV became the 11th village under Villages Northwest, “hub and spoke” model operating in the Portland area. As a spoke we have access to the considerable experience of Villages NW to help build RDV. For more about Villages NW go to www.villagesnw.org. For more information about the Village Movement go to Village to Village Network www.vtvnetwork.org

Robust efforts were made to build Rainy Day Village by constructing the foundation that would be needed to have volunteers provide services for paying members and even more importantly to create a vibrant network of community connections: people living their lives with pride, grace and independence in safe, healthy and socially connected ways. The 20 year history of the Village movement has shown that the relationships built among villagers has added depth and meaning to people’s lives way beyond the help they receive with daily chores.

RDV was poised to open with members and volunteers in May 2020. Unfortunately, the launch date has been postponed indefinitely, due to COVID. Since the start of the pandemic RDV has been in a holding pattern.

The Steering Committee has decided it’s time to assess where we are going and hope that interested parties will attend one or both of the upcoming meetings to help plan the future of Rainy Day Village on the North Oregon Coast.
