Hoffman Gallery Show August 2022
August 4-28 | 1:00-5:00pm
Thursdays through Sundays
Hoffman Center for the Arts | 594 Laneda Avenue | Manzanita
Featuring the works of ALXSw,
George Wilson, and Kopali Serna

Artists’ statement: ALXSw –

“Studying martial arts introduced me to Shodo and Zen traditional works. I’ve been deeply impacted by studying the use of empty space in the works of Zen Reishis. Additionally, the placement of an artist’s chops (the red seals) are the final balancer of a composition. Like most 2D arts the first works of a student of Shodo (the art of the brush) are precise, structured, predictable as identifiable kanji or phrases, as with realism in western painting; the orange in a bowl is predictably recognizable. There is no strain or inquiry required to extract any particular meaning.”

Artists’ statement” George Wilson –

“I paint watercolors, soaking the paper, sometimes on both sides and applying washes of color and tone wet on wet to create atmosphere and form. As the paper dries I add detail and structure using sketchbook and memory as source material. I like to paint the shapes of birds and sea stacks; the vertical staccato of old river pilings, the wake of ducks on the river.”

Artists’ statement: Kopali Serna –

“This series explores the story of a hearth that lay frozen for generations but has undergone a time of thawing and regeneration. I conceptualized the series from my perspective as a self-taught indigenous artist, at one point separated from my traditions through the impact of colonization, but now intuitively and joyfully rejoined.”

The gallery is free and open to the public.

Howdy – Jeff and the JW Merc roadside “pop-up” booth will be back in WHEELER this coming TUESDAY the 16th of August – from at least 12-5 pm. Local bee pollen will be in the cooler ($10 per bag) – and plenty of local raw honey (from various collection points of the NW in all colors/sizes etc) jars to suit any palate or price point. Real Vermont maple syrup from the single family farm is as popular as ever! (REALLY – it never was just for pancakes in the first place) – all available sizes of jar/jug style – and some of the barrel-aged variety as well (ask Jeff). Pre-orders are always helpful – text Jeff on his cell: 208-424-0042 – e-mail if you prefer: jwmerc@gmail.com – and of course messaging directly through the JW Merc Facebook page is always an option. We’ll see you in our usual “pop-up” spot (in front of the building where Pelican and Piper have their newly-expanded store across from the train stop at Hwy 101 and Rector Street) on TUESDAY THE 16TH!!! jw

Visiting Massage Therapist offers ortho-bionomy Thurs/Fri

Submitted By: revolutionginger@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Summer on the coast can be hard on the body.

If you are suffering from the summer’s long days of working and playing- our visiting massage therapist this week may be your ticket to a more mobile and pain free August.

Alexi Hedlund has 13 years of massage experience with a specific focus on pain relief through a technique called Ortho-Bionomy.

When the body is stressed and out of balance, it will adapt as well as it can, but in the process it can create coping patterns of even greater stress and dysfunction.

Ortho-Bionomy is an elegant technique that works with the nervous system to cue your body’s self-corrective reflexes and allow tension patterns which are creating pain to relax, reset and reorganize.

Because the principles of Ortho-Bionomy work with positions of ease rather than force, most people find a session to be comfortable and relaxing while offering massive benefits.

It’s especially useful for dealing with mysterious symptoms or conditions that elude other successful treatment.

Whether your looking for relief from specific injury or a way to ease chronic pain and stress, Ortho-Bionomy can be beneficial.

Ortho-Bionomy works effectively with:

Back, neck and knee issues
Acute and chronic pain
Headaches
Shoulder dysfunction
Limited Range of Movement
Stress
Muscle tension
Sports injuries
Sprains and strains

Common benefits of Ortho-Bionomy:

Increased flexibility
Greater ease of movement
Interruption of the cycle of pain
Supports healing from surgery
Compliments physical therapy
Reduces muscle tension
Improved circulation
Supports relaxation

Book your 60 or 90 minute appointment with Alexi this Thursday or Friday from 10am- 6pm at North Fork 53 Communitea Wellness. Link to book below.

We will be writing [Vote Forward](www.votefwd.org/) letters to potential progressive voters in key states. Vote Forward letters are a proven way to increase the turn out of people who are likely to vote progressive but may not be motivated to vote. Health District Receives Welcome Jump Start to Develop New Health Center/Pharmacy

Health District Receives Welcome Jump Start to Develop New Health Center/Pharmacy

New Center Would Be Built in Wheeler and Will Create New Opportunities for Housing for Health Care Workers

Efforts by the Nehalem Bay Health District to improve primary health care delivery in north Tillamook County have received a major boost thanks to Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden.

Earlier this year the health district asked to be considered for “congressionally directed funding” to finance a portion of a new primary health care center and pharmacy in Wheeler. Merkley and Wyden announced recently that the requests have been included in proposals approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee where Merkley is a member.

The request for $3 million constitutes a major jump start for the district’s funding plan for the new health center/pharmacy.

“A new, state of the art health care center and pharmacy will truly be a transformative development in north Tillamook County,” said Marc C. Johnson, President, Nehalem Bay Health District. “The new health center/pharmacy will double the size of the current aging facility, allowing better delivery of services including specialty care, to more residents and visitors. The Nehalem Bay Health District is enormously grateful to Senators Merkley and Wyden for understanding and supporting quality health care close to home in rural Oregon.”

Johnson said the district is enormously gratified by the broad community support shown for the project, including endorsements of the congressional funding request from the Tillamook County Commissioners; the mayors of Wheeler, Nehalem and Manzanita; the Neahkahnie School District (which partners with the existing clinic on a School Based Health Center on its campus); the Emergency Volunteer Corps of Nehalem Bay; CARE, the non-profit social service agency in Tillamook County; and Oregon state senator Rachel Armitage.

All who endorsed the project understand the need to provide quality health care services close to where people live and work in rural Oregon.

“This level of community support clearly helps position the project for success, and the support had to be impressive to Senators Merkley and Wyden,” Johnson said. He said the entire board deeply appreciates the community support.

The district envisions construction the new facility on a 1.3-acre parcel directly adjacent to Highway 101 in Wheeler. The district purchased the property last summer and has done substantial preliminary design work, including geotechnical studies and coordination with the city of Wheeler.

The new facility is envisioned as a 19,000 square foot medical center and pharmacy on two levels. The new health center will contain expanded exam rooms, specialty suites, staff work and meeting areas and a significantly larger pharmacy.

The district is working to finalize an overall funding plan for the health center and pharmacy, including an approach to upgrade and revitalize the existing Nehalem Valley Care Center in Wheeler, a 48-bed skilled nursing facility that is one of the few facilities of its kind on the Oregon coast.

The district intends, once the health center and pharmacy are relocated to the new site in Wheeler, as part of its long-term strategy and subject to community approval, to repurpose a portion of its existing campus to address a critical community need – workforce housing opportunities for workers at the health center and Care Center.

The district is also committed to working with the North County Food Bank, currently housed in the old Wheeler hospital, to identify a suitable location for a new food bank facility.

The district welcomes community involvement in its planning and development and holds two regular meetings every month – the second Wednesday for health district business and the fourth Wednesday for Care Center business. The public is invited to attend the meetings that are held on Zoom.

For more meeting and general information: nehalembayhd.org/
