We are in need of a few things at the Nehalem Bay Methodist Church Food Pantry, clothing bank. If you happen to have a small tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, boots for men and women, rain coats and back packs, especially if there is a metal frame on the back of it, we would be most appreciative. Warm winter socks are also in short supply. Any camping gear that can be used for cooking on is also something we can use this time of the year.
You can drop off at the church during pantry open hours: Friday, Saturday and Monday from 10-2 or Wednesday from 2-6 or you can call me for pick up, Kathleen at 503-801-1073.
Church is located by Nehalem Post Office at

Dispelling Rumors in MY TWO CENTS posted Oct 20, 2022

Submitted By: themarthataylor@yahoo.com – Click to email about this post
I would like to inform the community on statements made by Mr. Anctil on Oct. 20th BBQ were possibly misconstrued with a screen shot of the city documents.
1. Wheeler City Council needs to focus on avoiding lawsuits

Applying the law to avoid lawsuits is just what Wheeler City Council has done the past couple of years. Wheeler has consulted land use legal experts and attorneys every step of the way and they ARE enforcing the laws. Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) has ruled multiple times that the developer must consider the Vision Plan and Traffic Issues. Based on those rulings it seems to me that they recognize the document as being valid and enforceable.
2. There are 2 hotel owners on council, both of whom voted in land use decisions regarding a hotel application.

There is only one hotel/motel owner on Wheeler council not 2 as stated in Mr. Anctil’s post. The councilor is my husband Gordon and he indeed recused himself from voting on the 2019-10 and 2019-11 hotel and large 110 seat restaurant. This was despite my husband and my belief that a small boutique hotel would be good for the town and potentially bring more business. The problem that I see (my opinion) is that the proposal was large scale and not in keeping with the character of Wheeler as stated by citizens and the Vision Plan. The two hotel/motels in Wheeler currently operating are, 9 and 11 rooms, respectively. And, by the way, both councilors who recused themselves supported a small boutique hotel but at legal council’s advice recused themselves from the decision making. Boutique, small town character businesses will likely attract more visitors and be an economic benefit for Wheeler. Large Scale establishments will diminish our quaint nostalgic feel.

NOTE: I was unable to find a finalized meeting minute record on the Wheeler Website.

Yours in Transparency, Respectfully
Martha Taylor

Multiple Issues – Perhaps You Were Not Listening SO I WILL RESTATE

Submitted By: Gardencoachkaren@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
WHAT Karen Matthews BRINGs TO THE TABLE

Let me reiterate from our previous meetings……
(dare I use ALL CAPS to restate my points once again?)

The management of municipalities takes discipline and commitment, understanding the systems, and following the laws set forth. I look forward to helping steer the City in the direction provided by you, our citizens, as documented in the Vision Plan to assure our beloved town retains it’s charm while increasing FINANCIAL VITALITY to take advantage of growth and solid management of our assets. My PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE of 6+ years on City Council gives me a solid foundation to apply my skills.

I will strongly support the Vision Plan, which was adopted by Comprehensive Plan and Ordinance. It deals with all sorts of issues; not just development. It is the “Voice of the Citizen”. The Vision calls for supporting a Vital Economy and we need to focus attention on that element for success as well as retaining the character of our village, assuring a HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT and more. These are not mutually exclusive.

I will work to research issues, manage projects that are supported by the council body, and introduce ordinance and resolutions that will allow the city to move forward with goals and objectives.

City Staff should be given the time and tools to find INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING. We, as councilors, can do some of the leg-work if asked to assist with these important projects, working as a team.

We need to assure Businesses have the support of our laws and rules and include them in the process through open communication. Lets ask them for input on the sign ordinance that is currently being rewritten without their representation. I will encourage reinvigoration of a BUSINESS ASSOCIATION to facilitate open dialogue.

WORKFORCE HOUSING needs solutions applied. Until we have housing for workers we cannot support our businesses needs for staffing. I will study accessory dwelling unit options for long term rentals.

Our ordinance for NUSIANCE ABATEMENT needs to be upgraded to give the city leverage to encourage adherence to welcoming and safe buildings, which will attract new business.

I will continue to invite volunteers to participate hands-on in beautification of our town and other projects.

These areas are all outlined in the Vision that is all-encompassing.

NO SHORT TERM RENTALS (Ask my competitors what they support). Other potential financial sources such as short term rentals have been suggested. I do NOT support this as a revenue source, after talking to several experienced administrators including Marnie, Wheelers Finance Manager, who has multi city experience, there are too many issues and the costs out weigh the financial gain.

My competitors in this Council race have stated that the Vision Plan is old and we don’t have to use it anymore, others have said it no longer represents what our citizens want. While I agree it is time to re-measure public input, we should not disregard what citizens documented in the interim. This is a long process by design and must be done without bias.

We were all drawn to Wheeler for what it is, a beautiful coastal town with a nostalgic feel, neighborhoods where people know and help each other, and the million-dollar view. We have such a unique village that many people crave. I support development in all commercial districts with small to midsize boutique hotels, shops, and eateries. What an exciting time to prepare for the influx of visitors along the Salmonberry trail.

We will one day be the place so many outdoor enthusiasts first land on the Oregon Coast from their journey over the coast range via the Salmonberry Trail. We will be here, ready to serve them with small shops to explore, food to eat, places to stay, outdoor recreation (think kayaking/birding) and likely a bicycle repair shop to meet their needs. Who know, we may even have a small shop offering massage and foot care?

In summary, I envision a small town welcoming visitors and citizens alike who are looking for a variety of recreation, services, and support needs. Lets work together to build that into a reality.
Lets work together to boost the energy, economy and ecosystem of Wheeler. I will continue to listen to the people of Wheeler and I ask for your vote ballots are here. Please vote now.

Change is Important. Experience and Leadership Counts!

For the first time in the last 10 years, Manzanita will have a very new City Council, which will bring different perspectives and fresh ideas.

You will choose two Council positions from a field of three people. I am the only candidate that has held office.

No matter who is elected, we will have a majority of new members on City Council and a new Mayor. I’m enthusiastic about bringing my experience to this new team and continuing to deal with the challenges we face! The newcomers will bring creativity and different perspectives, while my experience will help us get right to work!

Manzanita has a lot on our plate:
Completion of the Comprehensive Plan
Funding of the new city office building
Decisions on the foredune project
Revenue diversification
Updating System Development Charges (SDC’s)
Short Term Rentals and the STR Committees work –
maintaining fiscal solvency while addressing real
livability issues
How to incent Workforce housing
Modernizing our City’s records
Water Rates (last evaluated 10 years ago)
Saving our trees
Many, many more

If I have the honor to serve, I will bring experience and leadership to support and inform a new direction. My leadership experience will bring continuity to the Council and will be important as we tackle the many issues Manzanita will face as we move into the future.

Tillamook County Commissioner Mary Faith Bell notes: “I have the utmost respect and appreciation for Linda’s leadership, her heart for service to the community and her ability to develop, nourish and maintain positive relationships with a wide range of people. Moreover, Linda is a dynamo, she accomplishes amazing things, and leads and inspires others to great works as well. Truly, it is accurate to say that Linda brings out the best in people, often more than they knew they were capable of. Linda’s continued leadership on the Manzanita City Council is in everyone’s best interest.”

I would really like to hear from you. You can reach me via email at Linda.Kozlowski@gmail.com, or by phone at (503) 799-5550. You may also visit my website (lindaformanzanita.com) where you can learn more about my experience over the past 20+ years.

Thank you and please vote in November.

Message from the Band: Edge of the West

Submitted By: qulwater@msn.com – Click to email about this post
We are so fortunate that this band is making the trip out to the coast to play a very special show October 29th at the White Clover Grange, doors at 6, band goes on at 8 and will play two sets.

Tickets are available at tickettomato.com

The band just told us that they are adding keyboard player Ken Margolis for this tour. Ken has played with Bo Diddely and the band Cracker.
This was a very nice late addition and will certainly help keep the room jumping.

From the band:

“Hey Edge of the West family and friends,
Hope the change of seasons is doing you right. Feels about right here. We just wanted to let you know about some cool shows we’re playing this Fall, around the SF Bay Area and Monterey Bay regions and up through the Pacific Northwest. This Sunday in historic Point Richmond, CA we play an all-Grateful-Dead night at a newer venue – the Baltic Kiss, where there has been a weekly Dead Sundays event developing. Then, back playing our usual eclectic repertoire, we head North for a musical expedition through Medford, Eugene, Manzanita OR, Tacoma WA and Cave Junction OR, October 27-31. This’ll be a fun adventure. We’ll have the big version of the band with Professor Ken Margolis on keys, pedal steel master Charlie Joe Wallace and of course Bill Laymon, Jim Lewin and Marty Carpenter holding down the core. In November we return to California to team back up with master songwriter-troubadour and Platinum-seller Lacy J Dalton for a pair of shows presented by Santa Cruz’s own KSQD Radio: Moe’s Alley 11/17 and in Carmel Valley 11/19. Details below.
We sure to appreciate you keeping us in your universe. Thanks for keeping tabs on us. Come on down to a show when it works for you. Music events keep us together. And have a warm and cozy Autumn, wherever you may be.
Best, Edge of the West

WHEELER: Being Aware Will Make for Wise Decisions

Submitted By: ml2@comcast.net – Click to email about this post
Dear Wheeler Voters,

It may be a challenge to know whom to vote for in our current City Council race. Here are a few facts to be aware of as you select your candidates.

* Two candidates for City Council appear to be running on a single issue: no development on the North waterfront. They may not say so, they may even deny it, but they have repeated the same arguments over and over at public City Council meetings for several years (minutes of Council meetings are public record and are available on the City’s website.)

* One candidate is advocating for development ‘in proportion to our nostalgic village’. I believe an omission in this advocacy is the necessity to rely on our established zoning and ordinances when any development is proposed.

* One candidate, who says she’s ready to “get to the work at hand,” was chastised by the Mayor during a City Council meeting for making “negative comments about the character of the developer” (City Council minutes, 9/21/2021). I know that being respectful and courteous are always the best practices — always.

* Two candidates for City Council have “beautification” of our City as one of their goals. Do they have other, more realistic ideas in response to Wheeler’s financial challenges? Again, I have repeatedly stated that Wheeler is facing critical issues and that, by working together, we will find needed solutions. I certainly support beautification, especially as a way to celebrate once the hard decisions have been made.

* I have been offering Wheeler residents clear answers in response to questions about the financial stability of our City, including support of sensitive and responsible development, and not just on the North waterfront. Our City faces multiple challenges. I believe we need to work together and be open to multiple, possible solutions to increase our revenues, make needed improvements in our infrastructure and address other, pressing concerns in our community.

Wheeler voters: Ask the hard questions of ALL candidates, such as “what are your specific ideas for increasing revenue for our City?” Listen carefully.

Respectfully,
Mary Leverette

Little Giant adjustable ladder. Can be an extension ladder or a step ladder. Yet it folds up compactly for easy storage. It is metal and rated heavy duty by OSHA and rated for 300 pounds. I bought it new from Costco for $200 a number of years ago when I thought it would be needed to do work on my house. Instead, the laborer brought their own ladder. Consequently this ladder has been rarely if ever used. It has always been stored inside. It is in like new condition.

The seasons are changing and it is a good time to strengthen our immune system to help us prevent getting colds and flu. Practicing the ancient methods of Medical Qigong is a perfect way to prepare.

I will be teaching an easy to learn, immunity boosting routine that helps to strengthen our wei qi or defensive qi. This form uses simple movements, a healing mantra and acupoints that help strengthen the respiratory system.
I also will be teaching a self massage practice, calming breathing techniques, and will end with a compassionate heart meditation.

Wear something comfortable to move in.
Masks are not required but please wear one if that makes you more comfortable.
A little bit about me…. I became interested in Qigong over 30 years ago. In the last 10 years I have studied with Ling Gui International Healing Qigong School and am certified in several of their Medical Qigong forms. I love to share this powerful healing tool.
Warmly,

Linda Kozlowsky for Manzanita City Council

Submitted By: babbles@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
I am writing in response to the post below, from last night’s BBQ.

Even though I am a Nehalem resident, Manzanita and Wheeler are also important to me. Who is on city council in each of our three towns matters to me.

I have been thinking exactly the same thing as Ms. Edginton, that Linda’s historical knowledge from her 16 years on city council is extremely valuable. I feel it would be a loss to the effectiveness of the Manzanita city council to not have Linda still on the council as a liaison from the past to the future. Jerry Spegman is in his first term. Ms. Edgington was very recently appointed to fill a vacancy. Deb Simmons will be brand new on the council as mayor. Whichever of the two gentlemen running for a council seat winds up winning will also be brand new to the council. Even the city manager is new. That’s a lot of “new!” I think it would be best if there is at least one “old.”

I just decided to put my two cents worth in as an independent observer.

om peace namaste
Lucy Brook

from jenna edgington:
“… She will enable the new Council to hit the ground running by being able to provide insight on past Council decisions and also her thorough understanding on how the City functions and the role of City Council….”
I will be voting for Linda Kozlowski.”

MONEY IN OREGON POLITICS

Submitted By: dixiegainer@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Representative Marty Wllde is a Democrat representing House District 11. He has this to say about money in politics: “In effect, the content and direction of legislation for all of Oregon was decided by a group of 10 or fewer people. All Democrats. These people were picked by their ability to raise money, in secret.” (secret!) He also says that Campaign finance reform enjoyed a broad support in the electorate, but the Democrats in the legislature refused to support it!!

I am not concerned about a Republican PAC giving money to Republicans running for office. I am hoping to get a more balanced government for Oregon and so I am not voting for Democrats this year. We really need a balance to stop the one party control over Oregon. That is not a representative government. Make no mistake! I think that Republicans would do the same thing if they got majority power and held it for so long. A Democracy requires many voices to be heard. And ten people with the ability to raise money cannot be called a Democracy and should not control our legislature.

I put Marty Wildes entire letter in the BBQ some months ago. If you want a copy send me an e-mail and I will send one to you. In the box -saying Subject: put in ” Wilde’s Letter.”

Hey, hey, they’re here!

When I look at the names in the upcoming election, a tune keeps going through my head. Just over fifty years ago a new band took to the stage and TV with some songs that quickly rose on the Billboard charts. Between taking the Last Train to Clarksville and opining about Pleasant Valley on a Sunday, in their theme song they announce their arrival, and declare “We’re the young generation, and we’ve got something to say!” (Feel free to hum along!) This year we have the opportunity to listen to new voices, and send a new generation to represent us in Salem. Rather than relying on the way things have been done for decades, this new generation of dedicated, committed public servants is adept at using technology, social media, and they can use their smartphones better than we could ever use dictionaries and encyclopedias. When I fill out my ballot, I’m going to choose the future, and support this young generation, by voting for Logan Laity (HD32) and Melissa Busch (SD16). I urge you to think of the future, and vote for them as well.
