Women’s Workshop Tomorrow-Get New Habits to Stick!
When: Saturday, January 7, 10a-11a Where: North County Recreation District (NCRD): Fireside Room Cost: $23 (for 2023) Check, cash, Venmo Registration at the door
Want to make a few changes in the New Year and learn how to make them stick this time? In this workshop created for busy women, you’ll learn what 2 truths actually help and at least one ‘lie’ you’ve been told that undermines your effort in making habit changes.
We will experiment with easy (and even fun) tools developed in the Stanford Behavior Design Lab. These tools create an easy roadmap to make your new habits stick.
This workshop is: Part spa for the stressed and striving spirit. Part clarity for the curious or overwhelmed mind. And part ease for the journey ahead…

Ready to Get Out of Your Own Way?
Maybe you’re a perfectionist, feeling like your work is never good enough, afraid to show it to others unless it’s absolutely perfect.
Maybe you’re really good at giving to others, and really terrible at asking for your needs to be met. You have trouble delegating but wish others would do more.
Maybe you’re feeling anxious about certain tasks, and so you procrastinate and avoid them, and maybe you’re not even sure why you’re feeling anxious.
Our childhood experiences leave wounds that affect how we interact with the world. And when we heal those wounds, we see the world differently.
You don’t have to struggle anymore. It gets to be easier.

Dance for Healing – open dance sessions
“You can take control of your emotions by moving your body. Emotions are a physiological response within your body perceived by the brain. Moving your body has a positive impact on your physiology, which helps shift your emotions. MOVE YOUR BODY, MOVE YOUR BRAIN” @brainchat
Come dance it out, let the music move you. This is a drop in, open session, meaning: come as you are, when you can, anytime between 3-5PM, stay for 10 minutes or stay for two hours. Just move your body in whatever way it wants to with frequency specific music that will help you move out whatever needs to go. It’s time to move out of survivor mode, to become more present in your life, to thrive amidst the chaos….Hope to see you there.

LNWC Annual Meeting and Speaker Series
On January 12th, 2023 the Lower Nehalem Watershed Council will be hosting both their Annual Meeting and a presentation w/ Andy Bluhm, OSU’s Associate Program Director of the Hardwood Silviculture Cooperative, who will share new insight into a common tree in the Nehalem Watershed, the red alder.
The LNWC’s Annual Meeting will start at 5 pm. The Annual Meeting consists of board elections, selection of board officers, and the Annual Report. All members are welcome to attend to vote in board elections. The Annual Report will be a summary of council activities in 2022 including progress reports on restoration designs, planting projects, and regional collaborations. It’s been a busy year for the council so we hope you’ll come early to learn about what we’ve been up to.
Andy Bluhm’s presentation on red alder will begin at 7 pm. This presentation will introduce the characteristics of red alder and summarize the ecological role that red alder plays in the Oregon Coast Range. We’ll look at how red alder fits into the big picture of PNW ecosystems then examine the red alder’s effect on diversity, site productivity, community resiliency, and ecosystem function. Specific emphasis will be placed on the function red alder has in riparian systems and it’s influence on riparian communities.
In addition to a B.S. in Forestry from the University of Minnesota and an M.S. in Forest Ecology/Silviculture from the University of Georgia, Andy has spent the last 20 years at OSU as the Associate Program Director of the Hardwood Silviculture Cooperative- focusing on the biology and management of red alder. Other research projects at OSU have included directing the red alder management program for the OSU College Forests, managing a long-term study on alternative silvicultural practices, installing and measuring a Swiss Needle Cast research plot network, and coordinating the PNW Permanent Sample Plot network. His main duties include everything from education and outreach, data collection to growth and yield modeling and everything in between. In his free time, he enjoys exploring PNW old-growth forests in pursuit of big trees.
Andy is an expert on this foundational tree in our watershed and will have a wealth of information to share with us. Hopefully, everyone will walk away from this talk with a new appreciation for Red Alders and the roles they play in the Nehalem.
Both the Annual Meeting and the presentation will be hosted on Zoom and are free to the public. The zoom link is us02web.zoom.us/j/83650617243 or on the Faceboook event at www.facebook.com/lnwc1.
You can also contact the watershed council at info@nehalemwatershed.org. A recording of this presentation will also be posted on the LNWC’s YouTube channel with our other recorded presentations. Just search for “Lower Nehalem Watershed Council” on YouTube.
Event Information: This event is FREE and open to the public. Find more information on our speaker series and the links for access on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/lnwc1).

New Book Club – The Ponderous Tome
(Coming in January, 2023)
Announcing a non-fiction book club for thoughtful citizens interested in the Climate Crisis, preserving constitutional democracy, and – in general – building a better society through thoughtful, pragmatic reform.
The Ponderous Tome Book Club will meet monthly, ten times a year – omitting December and once during the high season – to discuss books on a variety of topics, including:
History and Biography
The Climate Crisis and Species Extinction
Economics
Domestic and Global Politics
Economics
Education, Health, and the Future of Food
War and Peace
Stimulating discussion is expected, but civility will be the order of the day, with Benjamin Franklin’s precepts for the conduct of meetings as our inspiration.
We hope to attract participants from a broad range of rational perspectives – but we will draw the line at denialism and defeatism. We seek to expand our minds and our sense of the possible – not our lists of grievances and causes for despair. (A daily dose of news and social media furnish quite enough of the latter.)
Our first book will be The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams, published this October by Pulitizer Prize-winning biographer Stacy Schiff. (At 327 pages, not too ponderous.)
‘Rick Gray, organizer of the Ponderous Tome Book Club, is a native Virginian and, since 2018, a full-time resident of Cannon Beach. In a varied career, he has been – in order – a practicing attorney, Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia, a high school history teacher and administrator, a professional stage actor, an op-ed columnist, and a full-time caregiver for his mother. A lifelong student of history and frequent political activist, he sought the District 32 seat in Oregon’s House of Representatives in 2022.
For more information, visit our Facebook group, or contact ‘Rick Gray at deinikes@gmail.com.
