The White Clover Grange is doing a project collecting information about the heritage apple trees in the Nehalem Valley (pears and crab apples too!)
We have been interviewing our long-term Grange members, driving around and identifying where many of the trees still are and collecting some wonderful stories along the way.
On October 14th from 1-4, the Grange will host The Heritage Apple Festival featuring cider, apple treats and a tasting of the fruit of our community’s heritage trees. We want to locate the best apples and pears for baking, cider making and simply eating fresh. As many of the trees are really old now, we hope to graft these treasures and continue growing the varieties that thrive here on the coast.
We have found a lot of beautiful old trees but we are sure there are more! This is where you come in. If you have old trees on your property that are still producing, and you would like to participate in the tasting, please contact Jennifer Childress at 503-368-5886 or email at goatherd@nehalemtel.net. We are looking for apples from trees planted before 1970, though sometimes we don’t know when they were planted and just know that they’re OLD! And that’s fine. We would love to include them.
Even if you don’t have old apple trees, we’ll be making cider and the public is welcome to bring apples for pressing. Bring your own jars and you can take home your cider. Donations for this are welcome.
The following instructions will help you keep your apples fresh for the tasting. Or if you need assistance, we would be happy to help you pick and store the fruit.
Many thanks to the Tillamook County Cultural Coalition for funding this project of the White Clover Grange.
Instructions for participating in the heritage apple tasting
Pick 12 ripe apples or pears off the tree (not off the ground)
Place in crisper in the refrigerator, if picked prior to mid-October
When the time comes for the tasting, place in paper bag and label bag with a sharpie.
Helpful information to include:
Name of variety if known
Date picked
General location of tree (ie Nehalem, Hwy 53 above/below McDonald Rd., Northfork Rd. (above/below McDonald), Wheeler, Manzanita
Age of tree (if known)
Name of donor

I bought this truck two years ago for my business, mostly just to haul around my tools. It’s been very reliable for me, but I closed my business and now I no longer need a truck. I’ve been maintaining it well and only give it full synthetic.
VIN: 1FTPX14VX9KA27746
Mileage: 230,560
Title: Clean
Engine: V8 5.4L
Transmission: Automatic
Drive: 4×4
Fuel: Gas (FlexFuel)
THE GOOD:
• Runs great
• Heater & AC work
• Includes steel rack & toolboxes
• Backup camera
• Stereo has Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto
• Fitted waterproof seat covers
• Tires still have tread
• No check engine light
THE BAD:
• Dented tailgate
• Left turn signal is fast (but all lights do work)
• Single key, no keyless entry
• Slight power steering issue:
The truck loses power steering when turning right at really slow speeds. It hasn’t bothered me enough to get it fixed yet and it hasn’t gotten any worse since it started. My asking price is based on KellyBlueBook’s value which has already taken the power steering issue into account.
First person with $6,000 gets it, but I may consider other offers as I need my parking space back soon!

Hello to North County Voters,
I would like to ask you to vote yes for the North County Recreation District’s 5-year Levy coming up for renewal on November 7, 2023.
As memory serves me, I first started going to the building which houses NCRD when I was in the 5th grade. It was there I met a woman who became one of my lifetime friends. But we’re not here for my history.
What a building this was then and is now too. The building houses a variety of people and projects. I’m going to have to guess ages, maybe 4-80 years old. And what are all those people doing there? The preschool would be the youngest, then there are the after-school kids, the people who use the fitness center, and the blend of all the people who take classes. So, I’m pretty sure people using NCRD age from 4-80 plus years old. It is a wonderful building that not only goes on for all those years, but also serves so many people.
So many communities would love to have such a building and programs to serve so many people. I must tell you about my special passion for NCRD and their programs, which is the kids. I don’t want any child to go home to an empty home–which is what their after-school program serves. And it is first come, first serve. Doesn’t matter if you have the full payment or not, you can get a scholarship for this program. Sports programs are also offered to these kids. Right now, it is soccer.
Adults can take classes; I’ve watched the art classes–it’s wonderful. Working out in classes, or in the weight room or the cardio room has helped so many in our community. My mind wants to say, community, classes, and NCRD are good for all of us.
Best,
Patty Rinehart
A COMMUNITY TREASURE
When we moved to North County 25 years ago, one of our first connections to the community was North County Recreation District. We’ve watched our recreation center develop and flourish into a hub of activity, a community treasure. From the Youth Center, to exercise classes in the Fitness Center and Aquatics, to the “Learn to Swim” program, to senior activities, to productions in the Performing Arts Center, NCRD offers something for everyone who lives and visits North County.
Every five years we, as a community, get to renew our support for NCRD, by voting “YES for NCRD” on the November ballot. Amazingly, the tax rate has not increased in 15 years, since the first tax levy in 2008! We home owners will not be paying anything more; we will simply be saying “YES” to a continuation of the programs offered by and the operational costs of North County Recreation District.
Please join us in voting “YES for NCRD.”

Premium indoor cycle, very good condition. The computer needs a new battery if you want to track progress.
“The result of more than a decade of cycle development, the Keiser M3 is like no other indoor cycle you’ve ridden before. Keiser scrutinized and quality tested every single component of the M3, from the top of the comfortable handlebars to the bottom of the rock-solid base and everything in between. The centerpiece of the M3 is its eddy current resistance system, which offers infinitely adjustable resistance. This creates a vigorous, challenging workout along with a remarkably smooth, whisper-quiet ride. In addition, the cycle is built to last, as the resistance system doesn’t wear and is virtually maintenance-free. And to keep you comfortable throughout your ride, the M3 includes a four-way adjustable seat (up, down, forward, and backward), dual-position comfort handlebars, and adjustable Shimano combo pedals.
The M3 is also equipped with a sophisticated computer system that tracks your rpm, power output in watts, kilocalories, heart rate, pedaling time, resistance, and trip distance. Other features include a gravity-based water bottle holder, an anti-slip belt, and a smooth resistance shifter. Designed with the needs of fitness clubs in mind but portable enough for the home”
It’s a really premium, solid, smooth, and quiet way to exercise indoors. The roller blade wheels make it easy to transport.
Located in Manzanita.
$800 OBO – email, thanks!

Eric Sappington: I’ve lived on the Oregon coast for the last 27 years. I moved here from the Midwest to be inspired in my songwriting as well as my art. I paint whatever emotions I have in the moment I have been working on, or working through. Most of the time I don’t think about what I’m painting, I just do it. This can turn into a series or just a one off abstract blow out. The show is all about transitioning. Let’s see where it takes me.
Brittany Sheffield: I am a 33 year old wife and mother of four. I was born and raised in Tillamook. Art has always been a passion of mine even from a young age. This past year I started getting back into painting as an outlet and way to relax between work, kids and school. I’ve really enjoyed finding things that have challenged me creatively.
