Turning the Tide in Oregon’s Blue Ecosystems: Seaweeds & Green Crabs

Submitted By: vicky@netartsbaywebs.org – Click to email about this post
Join Friends of Netarts Bay – WEBS on Wednesday, March 18th, 6:30-7:30 for the second webinar presentation in our 2026 “Producers of the Bay” series!

Oregon’s coastal blue ecosystems are dynamic, productive, and increasingly shaped by climate change and invasive species. This webinar explores the ecological roles of seaweeds and invasive green crabs, and how science-informed, ancestral stewardship and harvesting practices can contribute to ecosystem resilience. Drawing from marine ecology, the Indigenous 13 Moons seasonal framework, and Asian coastal food traditions, the session connects ecosystem literacy with culinary nourishment.

Dr. Siew Sun Wong from OSU’s School of Nutrition and Public Health and Dr. Samuel Chan from OSU’s Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences will share their insights into Oregon’s nearshore systems and how thoughtful harvesting and cooking can transform ecological challenges into opportunities for stewardship and sustainability—while also creating meaningful and nourishing meals.

Seaweed samples will be available at the WEBS office for pick-up to enjoy during the presentation. Details will be sent to all registrants.

White Clover Grange Grafting Workshop March 28

Submitted By: goatherd@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Save the date for the White Clover Grange tree grafting workshop on Saturday March 28th from 1-4. We will be grafting heritage apples and some pears.

Grafting is an art and allows us to grow a genetic replica of a living fruit tree. We have some amazing old trees growing in the area and want to keep them alive for generations to come!

If you’re interested in grafting a copy of your own tree (or a friend or neighbor’s), now’s the time to collect scion wood. Scions are long straight twigs about the size of a pencil or a little larger. Cut them with sharp pruners and store them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until the workshop.

To sign up for the workshop, contact Jennifer Childress with the White Clover Grange.

PRUNING WORKSHOP FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE PLANTS

Submitted By: barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post

If you look out your window right now and see an unruly tangle of branches and limbs but not much foliage, that’s your cue to prune.

But know this: the decisions you make on where to cut and what to remove will shape your landscape for years to come. YIKES!

Intimidated? So is your Japanese maple whenever you approach it with pruners in your hand (or, heaven forbid, loppers).

So talk about coincidence! The Hoffman Center for the Arts just happens to be offering an all-day, hands-on Pruning Lab with the Wonder Garden’s all-time favorite aesthetic pruner, Maryann Lewis.

Class size is limited for individual attention so get in while the going’s good. We’ve a few slots left.

SATURDAY, MARCH 14th
9am – 4pm including lunch
$100 (scholarships available!)

From Space to Long Ago: Writers Read Celebration Considers ‘From A Distance’

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Some say perspective changes everything. The 16 writers from throughout the Northwest, Canada and Texas selected to read their pieces on the theme, “From a Distance,” for the Cannon Beach Library’s Writers Read Celebration, twisted their perceptions to encompass time, space and technology.

They will read their poems, short stories and essays at the Celebration beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, March 6 in the library, 131 Hemlock St., Cannon Beach.

Admission is free. People can attend in person at the library or online; the link will be on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org.

From a conversation with the wind to backwards time travel in Galway, Ireland, the pieces offered a variety of views from a distance.

A boy looks at the planets while a Martian considers Earth. Friends try to plan a coastal trip via text messages. Life changes direction for a young man working in a mint field. A woman hopes to recapture her great-grandmother’s recipe for beans and pork.

This is the eighth year of the library’s Writers Read Celebration. Writers were asked to submit up to three entries – limited to 600 words per entry – on a chosen theme. This year’s theme was “From a Distance.”

The library received a record-breaking 122 entries. They were reviewed in a blind selection process by a panel of volunteers from the library’s NW Authors Series Committee.

Those selected to read were:
Aronne Barnes, Portland: Short Story, Charity Lamb

SYMPHONY PRESENTS CONCERTS IN MARCH

The North Oregon Coast Symphony continues its 2025-26 season with two concerts in March titled “Adventures in Sound.” The concerts are designed to appeal to children as well as adults, and the program will begin with Serge Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf”. This classic children’s tale set to music is perfect for introducing young people to the various orchestral instruments, as each character in the story is represented by a musical “voice.” Local favorite Liz Cole, an award-winning stage and TV actor, will return as narrator.

Before the concert begins there will be an instrumental “petting zoo”, an opportunity for children and their adults to play some of the orchestral instruments.

The program also features the rousing 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, Holst’s Jupiter from The Planets, Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King, and Glière’s Russian Sailor’s Dance. Cookies and refreshments will be available at both concerts during intermission.

The first concert will take place on Saturday, March 14 at the Nehalem Elementary School Gym (36300 8th St., Nehalem, OR) beginning at 3:00 pm.

The second concert will be on Sunday, March 15, at the Bob Chisholm Community Center (1225 Avenue A, Seaside, OR) at 3:00 pm.

Admission for both concerts will be: $10 Adults, ages 18 and under FREE (children 12 and under with adult supervision).

Visualization Meditation event for creating a beautiful Future this Wednesday in Nehalem!

Submitted By: seadreamnehalem@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
With all that is happening in our world now, rather than be swallowed up by despair, it is more imperative than ever that we step into our courage and use our energy toward a bright future for ourselves, our community, all of humanity, this beautiful planet, and all beings.

The antidote to the hopelessness and dread that can overwhelm us is love and courage. Now is the time for deciding to create hope and positive possibilities. Let’s not forget: this is a mystical universe, and life is a mysterious (and brief) adventure that none of us truly understands.
We are each much more powerful than any of us realizes. When we spend time cultivating peace and hope inside of ourselves, it is not just a feel-good experience. It is real energy being created, it makes our real-world actions possible, and it is powerful. Imagination is powerful, and it is the beginning of action. When we visualize, dream into, and deeply cultivate a belief in the possibility of a better, more beautiful future we begin the work of turning what matters most to us, into matter. We are the ones who make real the things we want to see happening.

Let’s practice creating beautiful future visions, together in a guided meditation followed by some creative journaling/painting (optional) / integration time!

What Does Conscious Aging Mean to You?

Join us for a conversation about what inspires you and helps you through your aging journey.

We’ll offer thoughtful quotes from a number of sources and from wise people through the ages, as prompts for discussion. In small groups, we will discuss what it means to age mindfully — maybe even with grace, humor and equanimity. Then, all together, we’ll exchange ideas and our combined wisdom. You are encouraged to bring quotes, poems or words of wisdom that inspire you to stay awake to how your life is unfolding.

Your $5 donation at the door supports the Pine Grove Community House.

NOTE:
We announced that we planned to show the film, Wine, Women and Dementia for our March event. Unfortunately, we find we do not have the right to show this film publicly. We encourage you to look for the film though PBS, where it is available to stream at home.
