OTA Broadcast TV Reception

Submitted By: dwieb1@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Has anyone had trouble watching channel 8 (KGW) lately? Channel 15 (KOIN) is out with the bouncing DirectTV logo which happens from time to time, and I’m used to channel 10 (OPB) having signal problems (it’s been mentioned here on BBQ). But channel 8 doesn’t usually have these problems, and this morning it’s mostly black, frozen, or heavily pixelated.

I’ve been talking to John at KGW and he’s not heard of others having signal problems out here currently. So I’m reaching out to see if anyone in Manzanita or Neahkahnie is seeing what I am. These areas so close to the translator on the mountain should have no problem getting a good signal if all is working.

Thanks,
Dave

Passion for Education

Submitted By: dmccalltillamook@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Education is an interesting thing. The more we learn, the more we understand how little we know — but we learn how to approach topics, decipher problems, and come up with opinions, solutions, and advance ourselves and society in general.
The love for education is also interesting. Once bitten, some are in for life. Some people never stop learning, whether they satisfy that need by reading, researching, writing, or sometimes continuing to go back to school and get multiple degrees. Others transition their love for education into educating, and become teachers or professors. Some of them spend their lives educating kids, tweens, or teens, while others prefer to educate adults. Week after week, year after year, they return to the classroom and share their passion with others.
I especially admire those who augment their passion by volunteering to serve on school boards. As the rest of us rest up after a long day of work, they gather to pool their energy in their efforts to guide the educational institutions we value.
I have known Betsy McMahon as an educator, a world traveler, a dedicated TBBC board member, and as a friend. I know we are all served well with her on the TBCC board.
During the five years Betsy has served on the TBCC Board, she has combined her experiences from teaching internationally with those gained in multiple states, and assisted the Board in better connecting with our community and the community’s needs. She is fully committed to ensuring that each of our students have access to quality education, and developing programs in fields where our local community has special needs. She is equally passionate about apprenticeship programs for construction trades and nursing programs, and enabling high school students to take full advantage of dual credit programs while quality courses are offered for adults as well.
In recognition of this dedication, she now serves on the Executive Board for the Oregon Community College Association, raising TBCC’s reputation higher, while bringing additional access and experience back to our community.
Please join me in filling the oval next to Betsy McMahon’s name, to ensure this dedicated educator can continue to serve us wholeheartedly on our community college board.

ERIN Has My Vote!

Submitted By: pattyrinehart@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Erin Laskey-Wilson has my vote for Position #2 on the North County Recreation Board.
Like Erin, I have lived pretty much my whole life in North Tillamook County-Manzanita-to be exact. Before I knew Erin, I knew her Mother Linda. Linda worked for me in the grocery business as a baker. I found Linda to be honest, kind, and a hard worker-just like the other Woodwards in our community.
Erin came along and as a child in our community worked in the community as she was growing up. Washing dishes, dishing ice cream, pouring coffee, and all the jobs available in our area. Erin is also honest, kind, and a hard worker, just like her mother.
Erin moved away to go to college and then decided to come back “home”.
Erin has had her children in the pre-school at NCRD and voluntered several years with the pre-school. Self employed as a real estate broker, Erin has worked on a path to better herself and her family. Erin has excelled with her family and her career. She’s not afraid to offer her opinion and listen to other opinions. She shows positive ambition with whatever she takes on. I believe this positive ambition and her ability to listen to different views will make her a good fit with the North County Recreation District as it grows and continues to help the youth in our community. Thank you for listening and please vote for Erin. Thanks, Patty Rinehart

Why ME for NCRD

Submitted By: cpossibility1023@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Community, the Tillamook Pioneer has generously provided a venue for all Candidates running in our Special District to answer the same questions, here are mine. I encourage you to log into tillamookcountypioneer.net to learn about all of us.

DIRECTOR, POSITION 2, 4 YR TERM
Constance Shimek
1. Why are you running for this position? I enjoy the NCRD as a community participant. I was recruited to the Friends of NCRD fundraising board in 2008, our primary focus was replacing the pool. Over the years we expanded our efforts to support all programs and projects for the NCRD. I am very proud that up through 2021 we (Friends of NCRD) raised and distributed over $100,000.00 to the NCRD. After leaving the Friends of NCRD, I remained actively involved with the NCRD by attending almost every Board meeting from a commitment for the NCRD to be the best it can be. I am running for the NCRD Board of Directors as I see an opportunity to have the NCRD be even better than you know it currently to be. I believe my energy, community relationships and dedicated commitment to the NCRD’s future will be a refreshing asset to the Board.

2. If elected, what will be your priorities?
1) Enrolling the Board, Staff, and Employees into having all actions and interactions be guided by the NCRD Mission Statement. ‘To Promote the Educational, Recreational, Social and Physical well being for the entire North County community by offering activities for all ages and abilities in an inviting environment.”
2) Broaden decision making to include new ways of incorporating DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility)
3) Foster new ways of communicating and engaging with the Communities.

3. What particular experiences or skills have prepared you to serve?
a. 15+ years of active involvement and continued personal investment in making a positive difference with the NCRD. In a prior career I was one of
two Workers Compensation Administrators for the largest Employer in Oregon. We were acknowledged for creating and implementing the most
effective Return to Work Program in the State. I have created and managed a successful Health & Life Insurance career for 23 years. While on the Friends fundraising Board I held all positions and was elected President during my last two years.
b. I have the courage to bring to light that which needs to be examined.
c. Being a cancer survivor, I say ‘welcome the diagnosis, we can only impact that which we are aware of.’ Given we are dependent on the Operations
Tax Levy (coming up 11/23) I believe it is critical to keep an eye and ear out for how the NCRD is being received in the 3 Villages and beyond. I will welcome and encourage community comments and questions as opportunities for opening doors, engaged dialogue and resolution.

4. What issues do you believe the board needs to address? Please list 3 and your solutions/ideas
a. The current Executive Director has announced their term commitment to the NCRD is limited. Solution: Immediately begin the process of recruiting and hiring a permanent, long term Executive Director.
b. Some Community members feel the Board is not an inviting space to bring questions. Solution: Facilitate quarterly Town Halls
c. Potential members who work daytime hours do not have access to activities. Solution: Create additional Programs with a wider variety of Programs for Evenings and weekends. Expand weekend hours.

5. If you could make one improvement to the work this board does, what would it be? Hold monthly board workshops for discussing NCRD’s issues and processing solutions which may later be voted on at a Board meeting.

6. In your opinion, what attributes must a good board member have?
a. An unwavering commitment for having the NCRD be the best it can be
b. The courage to question the status quo and create newly
c. Energy to enliven others to stay on track and cause results

7. What is your vision for our community? My Vision is that the NCRD is known as a revered treasure and a Beacon of Light for each and every person in the North Tillamook County community and beyond. I would love to have a soft solar light installed in the Cupola, creating the experience of ‘home’ for the community and the center of belongingness.
Please vote for Constance!

Sewing machine repair needed

Submitted By: pangaeagaia@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Help!!!My Viking sewing machine will not work. The hand wheel barely turns and I have much sewing to finish and this has never happened before, but I have not used it for about 6 years. It has been covered, in a room that is never used.
It is a 1000 Series, model 10 30, purchased used in 1990 for $170. I will pay a reasonable amount to get it running again, and/or a tune up. Please email or call 503.801.7631
It is the best machine I have ever had!
Thank you!

Let’s discuss Bees, Birds and Bus at The Roastery in ROCKAWAY.

Submitted By: leverettefortctd@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Hello!
If you saw my post about getting together to discuss bees, birds, and the bus and felt like Wheeler was a too far of a trek for you, you’re in luck. I will also be holding a discussion the following day at The Roastery in Rockaway.
My name is Mary Leverette and I am an avid birder. The birding year in Tillamook County is full of beautiful birds — some 450 species of birds have been sighted along our coastline — and we are fortunate to have great places to watch them! Some of my favorite winter visitors are Varied Thrushes and Chestnut-backed Chickadees. Both of these birds visit my feeder tray, starting usually in mid-October and stay until April. I love chatting about birds and would love to share my knowledge with any bird enthusiasts or curious observers.
I am also a novice bee keeper. In Spring 2022, I took a leap of faith and started keeping honey bees. This is something I have thought about doing for decades. I saw an advertisement on the outside bulletin board at the Tillamook Farm Store with a date for a ‘introduction to beekeeping’ group. I spent one Saturday morning at a class sponsored by the Tillamook Beekeepers Association (TBA) and came away hooked! Let’s learn together!
I am also a candidate for Tillamook County Transportation District in the upcoming election. I want to hear suggestions, concerns, wishes, anything you wish to offer. As an elected representative my job will be to carry your message and fulfill on the promise of the district that your tax dollars pay for. I am a firm believer in collaboration.
Like the bees, and the birds, and all of nature, we will come up with the most elegant solutions when we work together.
Please join me the Sunday, April 30th at 10am at the Roastery in Rockaway. I’ll just be hanging out for an hour having some coffee and hoping you’ll stop by for a chat.
The Roastery is at 165 S Miller Rockaway. Great coffee and delicious baked goods, plus just a great new addition to the community.

IN A WORD: CONSTANCE!

Submitted By: ketzel.levine@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I write to encourage my fellow citizens to vote for Constance Shimek for NCRD Board of Representatives.

Constance befriended me early on in my move to the area. I will always remember her infectious enthusiasm for the community I was tip-toeing around and her encouragement that I get involved. Anyone who knows her will not find this surprising.

From the get-go, I found Constance’s passion for a number of local organizations – in particular, NCRD – quite infectious. Does anyone else remember that epic ’empty-your-closet’ fundraiser in the gym? At the time, given her involvement in all things NCRD, I was quite surprised to discover she was neither on staff nor on the Board.

Well enough of that. It’s high time Constance held an elected position where her commitment to NCRD can further enliven programs & policy and engage a wider audience beyond her friends and fans.

Vote for Constance!
