Remember, ocean shores can be dangerous. Avoid logs in the water. Keep your distance from marine mammals, and never turn your back on the ocean! If you find any hazardous material, please alert the Beach Cleanup Captain. And remember, it’s more fun to work as part of a team. Bring a buddy, stay safe, and have fun!

What to Bring: Please wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and bring a backpack for hands-free convenience. Feel free to bring tools (recycled trash bags, buckets, etc.) if available and a reusable water bottle to support our sustainability efforts.
What’s Provided: Trash bags and gloves are available to all volunteers at check-in. A small supply of trash grabbers can be loaned. If you have your own, please bring them.
Restrooms: Public restrooms are available at the check-in locations.
Parking: Parking at check-in is limited however people usually move in and out quickly. A day pass will be provided to any volunteer cleaning sections of the beach requiring parking in a fee parking lot.
Transit: There is a nearby bus stop to the check-in location. Please see the NW Connect Oregon website and The Wave for more information: www.nworegontransit.org/routes/

WEBS and partners are hosting this event as part of the Explore Nature series of hikes, walks, paddles and outdoor adventures. Led by a consortium of volunteer community and non-profit organizations, these meaningful nature-based experiences highlight the unique beauty of Tillamook County and the work being done to preserve and conserve the area’s natural resources and natural resource-based economy. Loneliness and Aging: Making Space for Our Elders
with Pamela Slaughter

Loneliness and isolation are common experiences for older people, especially for those who do not have nearby family members or who are not computer literate.
What do you know about the elders in your life or in your neighborhood?
Are they connected to their families in an enriching way?
Do they belong to a caring community of some kind?
What can you do, or are you currently doing to avoid isolation and loneliness?

This conversation is for older adults and people who live near elders or have older adults in their lives. We’ll explore questions, experiences, and obstacles to showing up for elderly people and to generate ideas for connection.

Facilitator Pamela Slaughter is a lifelong Oregonian with varied interests. She retired from her career as an adult protective service investigator for Multnomah County, where she saw firsthand how devastating loneliness and isolation can be. Pamela is the founder and executive director of People of Color Outdoors, a nonprofit designed to help facilitate the reconnection of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to the outdoors. 
She is the author of the children’s book Hi! My Name is Robin!, published in 2020, which she hopes will encourage families to bird watch together.

The goal of the Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is to bring people together, to get to know one another at a deeper level and to encourage one another to live our best possible lives. The Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is held on the second Monday of each month from 2 to 4 PM.
This program is sponsored by Pine Grove Community House which allows us to keep admission at $5 per session. All money received goes directly to Pine Grove.

Sunrise Service – at 6:30 am at the Boat Launch in Nehalem Bay State Park hosted by Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church and St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church

Dress warmly and watch the sun rise with others on Easter Morning! This service will include scripture, song, a very brief homily, The Great Thanksgiving, communion, prayer and watching the sun rise as a metaphor for Christ’s resurrection.

From Thursday, May 16 to Sunday, May 19, 2024, we will gather in Nehalem, OR, at the White Clover Grange for an unforgettable extravaganza of the senses as the Trash Bash celebrates its 25th anniversary with a Trash, Boom, BANG!
Under the banner of “Rising from the Trashes” storytellers, visual artists, community activists, musicians, and runway trashion models will show off their creativity and passion for the natural beauty that surrounds us and the environment we’re passionate about preserving by turning trash into art! Should you be there? Absolutely!
Each artist puts their own unique spin on the experience and “you walk away with a sense of common purpose with a community of people” says Jennifer Nightingale, an Astoria-based novelist and storyteller who has returned to the Trash Bash to tell trash-inspired tales again and again. “When I come to the Trash Bash, I feel understood . . . I’ve never participated in any group where I felt so instantly welcomed.”
What do all of the participants have in common? “They take great delight in our natural world and,” as Nightingale stresses, “if you don’t fight for it, it won’t be here. The interesting thing about the trash bash is,” she goes on, “that there are moments of humor, pathos . . . the experience really runs the gamut of emotions—but in the end, it’s fun. The feeling that runs throughout is JOY.”
A writer and storyteller from Astoria, OR, Nightingale and her husband adopted a stretch of river beach eight years ago that they clean up several days a week. This experience and the trash she has collected by doing so over the years inspired her most recent Trash Bash tale. But participation is not limited to storytellers alone! Visual artists, fashion models, musicians, passionate volunteers, and community activists are all encouraged to get involved: “Just bring whatever gifts you have.”
“By participating,” Nightingale reflects, “it changes your response to trash. It heightens your empathy, your careful skills of observation. It helps you value trash and see all of its potential. It helps you walk away with a new perspective: Can you find the story inside the trash? Can it be repurposed somehow? Each item of trash tells a story. You’ll learn to see in new ways, beyond the item’s initial purpose.”
Why should you participate? Nightingale doesn’t hesitate, “It’s very meaningful. No matter what [which art form] you do, you’re telling a story. We all have to step up and do a little piece.” Maybe best of all, by participating and submitting your work of art/story/trashion, it’s a way to love the Coast back: “I love it here,” Nightingale gushes. “I love the power of the Coast. The rivers and estuaries. To be with a community of people who care for the well-being of this community is just AWESOME!”
