Eileen Hallee
May 20, 1944 – March 27, 2022

Former Manzanita resident Lois Eileen Hallee died March 27, 2022, at age 77 in the presence of family at a care center in Portland.

Born May 20, 1944, Eileen was well-known for her goal of having a Manzanita bush planted on every lot along Manzanita Avenue. Another of her worthy goals was seeing that stray cats were spayed or neutered.

Eileen spent much of her life taking care of Tom, her marathon-running, physician husband. In doing so, she attended hundreds of runs around the country and across the globe.

A service will be held in Eileen’s honor Saturday, May 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland.

Memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/portland-or/lois-hallee-10666946

Eileen’s family has requested friends pursue having a bench and accompanying Manzanita bush installed at an appropriate place in the City of Manzanita. Persons interested in helping with that effort are asked to contact Paula Peek at peek.paula1@gmail.com.

Join North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection’s Upcoming Meeting on Monday May 9th from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

At the meeting, we will update you on our efforts and offer a workshop that will teach you mapping tools. Find out exactly where your water comes from and empower yourself with tools to track clear-cuts and pesticide sprays in your area. We’ll also discuss upcoming volunteer opportunities and direct actions you can take to protect our forests and watersheds. We look forward to seeing you there!

An exciting upswell of momentum is building around Oregon’s forests and drinking watersheds right now. It’s the perfect time to reinvigorate our shared efforts to safeguard and restore our drinking water sources.

Our goal is to bring attention to the evolving coastal drinking water crisis—quality and quantity—resulting from corporate logging and pesticide spraying practices, and aspects of climate change (heat domes and the drought, for example).

By law, all water in Oregon is publicly owned, regardless of who actually owns the land. All watersheds that supply wells, spring boxes, or municipal systems should be legislatively protected. As a matter of law, and in recognition of the necessity of clean and safe drinking water for all, there should be no more logging nor pesticide spraying in drinking water sources.

We are advocating for the critical need to prioritize DRINKING WATER FIRST!

North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (formerly Rockaway Beach Citizens for Watershed Protection) is a grassroots group working, through education and advocacy, for better protections of the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the forests that sustain us. healthywatershed.org |www.facebook.com/NCCWATERSHEDPROTECTION

Hoffman Gallery April 2022
Oregon Painters Landscape to Modernism
April 1–May 1 | 1:00-5:00pm
Hoffman Center for the Arts | 594 Laneda Avenue | Manzanita

Capturing Oregon’s Magic
Traditional 19th century landscape paintings, impressionist views of the north coast, and vibrant abstractions from the 1940s and 50s make this exhibit a guided tour of exceptional, early Oregon artists’ 100-year, stylistic evolution. Many paintings in the exhibit originated in Manzanita – all capture Oregon’s magic.

The exhibit was inspired, and artwork was curated, from the recently published second edition of the book Oregon Painters, Landscape to Modernism, 1859-1959. The book is available through Oregon State University Press and found at many local bookstores.

Please vote to renew Library funding!

Submitted By: peatea0@yahoo.com – Click to email about this post
To my neighbors in the Three Villages area:

I would like to join others on this site who have encouraged you to vote YES on Measure 29-164, the Library Levy Renewal in May 2022.

In inflationary times, this 5-year levy is an amazing bargain. The cost if renewed is 65¢ per $1000 assessed value of a home, the same as it’s been since 2017! Our wide-ranging Library system costs only $110 per year for homes assessed at $170,000, which is $9.25 a month—less than most of us spend on beer and wine in a weekend.

Personally, I rely on branch libraries in Tillamook County for email and internet. All branches beam a wifi signal into their parking lots so anyone can connect day or night, for free. When I moved here, a friend told me about this, so I drove with a laptop to the Library one rainy night. I had to laugh—there we all were in our pickup trucks and SUVs, blue light shining on our faces as we sat behind the wheel accessing the wider world.

I have no internet at home, so I need Library computers for weather and news, ordering online, filling out forms. I also get DVDs and audio books from the Library. I have recommended movies and TV shows to friends who can’t find them on Netflix or Hulu. Then they use a Library card—it’s free!

Working at Library computers, I run into friends and overhear local news. Librarians help enthusiastic kids and sophisticated adults. Since Manzanita lost its “business center” at Salt and Paper gift shop, we have been able to manage because Tillamook County purchased modern printer-copier-scanners for all branch libraries.

Good value for the money, right? Please vote YES on Measure 29-164!

SUNFLOWERS FOR UKRAINE

Submitted By: helidoni@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
There is such great need for support in Ukraine, and children are uniquely impacted by the war there.

The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine, and Mindy Claflin of Nehalem was inspired to start a group fundraiser. At the Tillamook Headlight Herald Home and Garden Show next weekend, they will offer more than 5 different types of sunflower seedlings at $2 each. The seedlings include the American Giant Hybrid, which can grow to 14-16 feet high, as well as smaller types such as Dwarf Teddy Bear and Dwarf Sunspot, which are container varieties.

A beautiful 3-dimensional sunflower wall quilt created and donated by Michelle Vinciguerra of Neahkahnie will be offered as a silent auction item. Bids start at $300, with increments of $25. You may call in a bid now to Terri Maragos at (503) 368-5203 or at helidoni@nehalemtel.net if you want to get a head start. The quilt is valued at $750. “Sunflowers for Ukraine” will also feature T-shirts, stickers, buttons, bracelets and other small items.

The Home and Garden Show is at the fairgrounds in Tillamook Sat. April 30, 9-4 and Sun. May 1, 11-4. Entrance and parking are free.

All proceeds from the booth will go directly to the Ukraine campaign of the nonprofit Save the Children. The team ID# is TRT-4128, “Sunflowers for Ukraine.” With that ID on the memo line, checks can also be sent directly to Save the Children, PO Box 97132, Washington DC 20090. This is a highly rated charity which has been operating in Ukraine since 2014.

Please plan to join us at the upcoming show. We’ll be glad you did!

Measure 29-163

Submitted By: briantjmcmahon@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I’m a Vietnam veteran. Measure 29-163 on the primary election ballot is an opportunity for people to truly thank a veteran for their service. “Thank you for your service” are shallow words, if only said and not backed up by action. Measure 29-163 would financially support the Tillamook County Veterans
Service Office. The VSO has helped me and numerous veterans in seeking justice and rewarding
our service to our country. Vote yes for measure 29-163 and truly justify it when you say “Thank you for
your service” to a veteran.

Tomato Plants available at Nehalem Bay Garden Club Sale

Submitted By: barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
The Nehalem Bay Garden Club will have over 500 gallon pots of at least 19 varieties of tomatoes available at their annual Plant Sale. The sale will be held on May 7 from 9-4 and May 8 from 10-noon and is located at the junction of Hwy 53 and North Fork Rd in Nehalem. (Look for the Horse Sculpture!)

These varieties were specifically chosen by experienced members because they are proven performers in our coastal climate.

Indeterminate tomatoes grow on long vines, generally require pruning to 1 or 2 leaders that need to be trellised.

Determinate tomatoes grow compactly, sprawling laterally, usually don’t require staking (but we still recommend it), and fruit that ripens over a short period of time, but most produce all season here. (list of determinate varieties at the sale below indeterminate list.)

HomeGrown Farm Stand Opens at White Clover Grange

The HomeGrown Farm Stand, dedicated to Shelly Bowe, that resided at Kendra’s River Inn for a couple seasons, has now moved a bit to north down Hwy. 53 to the White Clover Grange. In keeping with The Grange’s mission to support local agriculture, it seemed a perfect fit for the local area farm stand. When Kendra Hall-Bramall moved and closed the River Inn, local area residents wanted to ensure the Farm Stand continued, and so did Kendra.
Enter the Grange – the perfect place for the Farm Stand!
Open daily, starting tomorrow Monday April 18th at noon, the farm stand features locally-produced organic vegetables, plants and more. The self-serve stand has a variety of plants available – and more arriving weekly.
The Farm Stand proceeds will go to benefit the Grange’s building maintenance fund.
Got good stuff growing? Want to sell your produce or products at Shelly Bowe’s HomeGrown Farm Stand – text or call Kendra at 503-801-1442.
“We want the Farm Stand to be another retail outlet for our local gardeners, farmers and produces,” said Kendra. “All to benefit the Grange.”
