Repeating the invitation here, the TIME is 4:00 to 7:00pm. !!!!!!!

Lucy Brook is turning 80 on the 25th of this month, Emily Dana is turning 70 on the same day, Lynn Levering is turning 70 on the 24th (it turns out she won’t be able to be there).

The idea has been born to have a joint birthday party, along with any other Libras who are having a 10-year birthday. It will be outside at the White Clover Grange on Sunday, September 25th. The weather prediction for that day is SUNNY. This will be a traditional North Coast birthday party, where everyone brings something to eat and drink.

Also please bring a chair, your own dishes and silverware.

Also, we three are moving slower than once upon a time, so please come prepared to help with anything that might need to be schlepped!

Also, there will be an Open Mike, so those of you who are musically inclined, please bring your instrument!

And, finally, if you feel inclined to give any of us a birthday present, please make a contribution to the White Clover Grange.

Come prepared to eat, drink and be merry!

Hi folks – if you weren’t able to visit the booth last week in Wheeler I’ll be making a few stops in north Tillamook County this coming TUESDAY September 27th to home/office doorsteps in the early afternoon hours.
It’s a great chance to stock up on some larger items as we head into autumn. I’ll have quarts ($25) and half-gallons ($50) of local raw honey, liters of real Vermont maple syrup ($24) – and half gallons of the same in “jug” style ($42) or glass ($45).
Bee pollen will also be in tow – available in 4 or 8 oz increments – and this is the last chance to get the raw buckwheat honey quart sale price ($25) – always good to have around in the cold winter months…
Reach out to Jeff ASAP to get on the list – via e-mail: jwmerc@gmail.com, via text: 208-424-0042 or through the JW Merc Facebook page.

Follow Along on My Campaign Trail

Hello Manzanita Community Members,

I’m Brad Mayerle, and I’m a candidate for Manzanita City Council. I’ve been out and about campaigning since May, when I announced my candidacy, and I’m continuing to knock on doors and make myself available to meet with those of you in the community. If you’d like to meet, please shoot me an email (MayerleforManzanita@gmail.com).

In the meantime, I encourage you to read my daily blog (www.mayerleformanzanita.com/today-i) to get a better understanding of my experience, thoughts about the challenges our area is facing and the daily activities I do to earn your support. For example, one of my recent blog posts explains the skill set that I’ve cultivated over the past 30 years as a small owner and medical professional and how that experience transfers well to that of being on council. Here’s an excerpt:

“As a medical provider, I was required to diagnose a problem, identify a treatment plan, educate the patient as to the treatment options, and finally implement treatment that was deemed appropriate by all. I did this day in and day out…for 30 years. It was often challenging, but it was gratifying to see a patient leave my office happier and healthier from the process. This same methodology can be used to identify and assess the city’s challenges, identify potential solutions, communicate with the community, and create solid policy.

Being a business owner also requires listening, education and compromise. As the owner, I ultimately made the decisions. However, there were a host of others involved. I had an office manager, advisors (accountants, attorneys), staff, and suppliers, all of whom weighed in on what was best for the practice and my patients. It could be compared to working with a city manager, planning and budget committees, constituents, and outside experts. In addition, I had to ensure my business was compliant with specific standards…not much different from council members complying with state, county and federal policies in their decision-making.”

Thank you for taking the time out to read this post, and I hope to talk with you soon!

Let’s Talk About Livability

Submitted By: MarkForCouncil2022@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I’m Mark Kuestner (KEST-ner) and I’m running for Manzanita City Council. The topic of livability seems to crop up in every conversation regarding the future of our village. Livability means different things to each person. As I go door-to-door, I hear concerns about pedestrian safety, short-term rental and tourism impacts, parks, trails and trees, housing that’s affordable, and accessibility.

There are many threads that make up the fabric of “livability”. The challenge facing us is to create ordinances, rules, and laws that make sense, are realistic, are legally enforceable and will have impact for today and the future.

Livability has been on my mind as I wrapped up two of my larger volunteer commitments for the summer: I coordinated staffing the Master Gardner booth at the Manzanita Farmers Market and helped coordinate the amazingly successful, 3rd annual Hoffman Center’s Wonder Garden plant sale fundraiser. Both of those activities require months of planning and coordination of volunteer teams in addition to hours of hands-on work. Both focus on making our corner of Tillamook County beautiful, healthy and green. Both bring me great satisfaction and are a visible indication that what I am doing makes a difference in Manzanita and the larger community.

I’ve been a gardener all my life and greatly appreciate the natural beauty of our North Coast. I’ve been very involved in the design and upkeep of the Hoffman Wonder Garden on Laneda Ave. I can envision a similar park-like setting at Underhill Plaza as part of our new City Facilities: the Farmers Market on Friday evenings, concerts on Sunday afternoons, community gardens to grow fresh foods, and families enjoying outdoor picnics any day of the week. To me, parks and nature are a critical component of what livability means.

We have opportunities to shape the future vision of the Underhill site by attending public meetings with the project team and completing surveys on the City’s website. Join me and take advantage of those opportunities to let your voice be heard.

In future posts, I want to share the thoughtful comments I’ve heard about all aspects of “livability” and explore the actions that we can take to improve and protect our town.

If I haven’t met you yet, I hope to do so over the next several weeks. Learn more about me at www.MarkForCouncil2022.com.

CANDIDATE’S STATEMENT: Hello Citizens of Manzanita, My name is Brad Mayerle and I am announcing my candidacy for an open position on the Manzanita city council. Our city is at a crossroads and the November election offers an opportunity to choose a better path forward. We need a clear vision for the future and better planning to help us get there. We need elected leaders who are transparent in their work and accountable to the people they represent. We need action, and a sense of urgency. I can offer that. In talking to my friends and neighbors, watching city council meetings and reading local stories and social media posts, it’s clear our city has lost its way, putting the interests of visitors and developers above the concerns of the people who live here. Our current path, with its dependence on tourists and short-term rental income, is not sustainable. We need a better balance: a diverse and vibrant community that welcomes visitors, but first and foremost, meets the needs of the people who call Manzanita home. Our future and quality of life depend on it. A little about me. I’m 58, married to my wife Jennifer for 25 years, and we have a 23 year old daughter, Sophia. We have a big, young, adopted yellow lab with too much energy named Colonel Mustard. I enjoy everything outdoors, be it clamming, crabbing, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, even yard work. My family bought a second home in Manzanita more than 20 years ago. We enjoyed being welcomed into the city and neighborhood enough to make it our permanent residence five years ago. While things have changed since we first bought our place, I believe our city is a wonderful place and has enormous potential for the future. Prior to my retirement a year ago, I was a dentist in Lake Oswego for 28 years, leading a staff of 15 wonderful and talented employees. We made a difference in our patients’ dental experiences and that makes me proud. Patients trusted me to hear their concerns, to diagnose their conditions, and to explain options for their health. These decisions involved listening to patient wants and worries, proposing a resolution, and implementing a plan that would satisfy their needs and budget. While not directly analogous to the role of a city councilor, many of the skills for success are the same: the ability to listen, think critically, create consensus, and execute a plan to accomplish the goal. I didn’t plan on seeking elected office when I retired. To the contrary, my plan included laying low, fishing, working in the yard, and enjoying the perks of living in this beautiful community. But I believe in public service and in making a difference however we can. I’d like to do that in Manzanita – to bring people together to address the issues we face. I’ve heard your concerns about livability, the ongoing city hall drama, closing trails to access the beach, dune grading, loss of wildlife habitat, and construction noise. And I believe there are solutions – that we can find common ground if we work together earnestly and respectfully. I know change can be difficult, even scary. But it can also be refreshing and fruitful. I feel well positioned in this endeavor by many members and organizations in our community that have offered their support. I believe that really listening, being genuine and educated on the issues — combined with my pragmatic approach to solving problems — can lead our city to a better place. That is how I plan to run my campaign, and if given the privilege to represent you, how I plan to serve you in council. Finally, if you see me out and about, please introduce yourself and let me know about your concerns and vision for Manzanita. I want to hear from you! I welcome and look forward to our interactions. All the best, Brad

Listening is a Loaded Word

Submitted By: MarkForCouncil2022@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I’m Mark Kuestner (KEST-ner) and I’m running for Manzanita City Council. My wife and I are “doers.” We volunteer in our community to get stuff done. We often quote a line from a favorite movie, “Talkin’ ain’t doin’!” However, I firmly believe that listening is “doing.” How can you make a valid decision until you’ve listened to everyone? Until we actually “hear” someone’s ideas, we can’t know where they are coming from. As I meet voters and hear their concerns, I find I am grateful for the opportunity to broaden my viewpoint by having these conversations.

However, taking time to listen to others and to hear where they’re coming from does not mean we will agree. “Being heard” should not be confused with “I agree with you”. We are all individuals so the odds are good that even after we’ve heard each other out, we may arrive at separate solutions to our problems. In this community of spirited individuals we need to be able to move ahead with actions and policies needed to run Manzanita, knowing some of us may be disappointed by particular details.

“Transparency” in our local government means we can observe directly the actions of our elected officials through public meetings, reports and individual conversations. My personal experience has been that Manzanita city officials are consistently open and transparent. They have always taken the time to speak with me, listen to my concerns and answer questions. They have not always pursued solutions I wanted them to, but I felt heard.

All City Council meetings are, by Oregon law, public meetings. Since her arrival, City Manager Leila Aman has reinforced and enhanced the avenues available to connect citizens with city officials. Zoom meetings and workshops, in-person working sessions, and online forums have all been created. These opportunities help us stay informed. Let’s take advantage of them!

My parents encouraged me to speak candidly and listen respectfully. Early in my social media education, I learned that speaking candidly can quickly devolve into unpleasant interchanges. I resolved to try to respond with facts, not feelings. Sometimes my passion for truth and justice shakes that resolve, but we’re all a work in progress and I strive to heed the better angels of my nature to grow each day.

We may not always agree, but I promise that I will listen and let you know when – and why – I have a different opinion.

I ask for your vote on November 8. If I haven’t met you yet, I hope to do so over the next several weeks. Learn more about me at www.MarkForCouncil2022.com.

MooVoter launches discussions on November election items

Submitted By: bluefishout@earthlink.net – Click to email about this post
MooVoter: Say it three times really fast.

(Tillamook County, Oregon) MooVoter, MooVoter, MooVoter. Some long time city council members may need to move over and make room for new voices as numerous council and mayoral seats are challenged throughout Tillamook County. In the last election of city officials, which was two years ago, there were 35 candidates and 12 took their seats in unopposed races while another 8 maintained their seats. The field has blossomed to 48 candidates and only 9 are unopposed. For the other races the fields are robust with first time candidates ready to contribute to our growing community.

Nine of the new candidates are vying for the five seats that will become available should the measure to make Oceanside the eighth incorporated city in the county pass. The measure to do this is simultaneously on the November ballot with the prospective candidates.

Along with the move to incorporate Oceanside there are eight additional County measures on the ballot. The County, and the cities of Tillamook, Wheeler, and Nehalem are proposing restrictions on the sale of psilocybin in opposition of State Measure 109 which passed by almost 56% in 2021. That statewide measure, set to go in effect in 2023, allowed for the use of the drug in supervised facilities to assist in combatting mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. It did not decriminalize the drug. Additional measures include a gas tax on dealers to improve and maintain streets within the city of Tillamook, and three levies to support local fire departments.

To assist voters in making an informed decision, MooVoter has launched into its fourth election cycle of presenting information on the ballot items particular to Tillamook County for voters to explore and discuss. The public Facebook group is non-partisan and does not endorse any candidate or measure. It shows each of the races in Tillamook County, which candidates are running against which, summaries and impact of the measures, and it gives members the chance to ask questions directly to candidates or representatives of the measures.

MooVoter’s mission is to give information about what is on the ballots, and hopefully, give members an opportunity to get to know the candidates and issues better. MooVoter gathers as much information as possible on candidates and measures. Most statements are pulled from Facebook or web pages published by candidates, news outlets, etc. All candidates are sent a notice that they have been included and a request to contribute a statement, and or, image. MooVoter is an opportunity to go beyond polarizing issues or party affiliation and learn about local candidates and issues first hand.

An added feature of MooVoter is that members can easily help the campaigns that they support by hitting the “share” button under the graphic on any thread and sharing it on their Facebook pages or in groups.

The rules are simple: You may respond to threads with questions, endorsements, opposition, or just observe. Please be respectful in your language. No party politics. No trolls. #BeKind

Are you hypno curious?

Are you hypno curious?

Let’s have virtual coffee and talk about it.

I have 2 spots open for hypnosis and coaching.

I’m strengths-based and solution-focused.

If you’re looking to make changes faster than you ever thought possible, I’m your girl to make that happen with you.

I’m not a hypnotist you’d see at the fair.

If you want someone to get you to stand up in front of people and cluck like a chicken while waving your arms about, I’m not the one to make that happen … unless it was something that you really wanted to do, and then I could help.

So, what do people come to see me about? These are some common themes:

“I have such high anxiety and I don’t want to feel like this anymore.”

“I hate my life and I don’t know how to get myself to make it better (but I know that I could if I could just figure it out).”

“I say terrible things to myself, and I want to stop doing that. It just makes things worse.”

“I’m in my own way, and I don’t know how to stop doing that. I know what I want, and I know that I am the one who keeps me from getting there.”

“I’m unhappy in my relationship(s) and I don’t know what to do about it.”

And how do you feel after working with me?

You’re usually smiling more beginning with our first session.

You are kinder and gentler with yourself, treating yourself with loving kindness. That old, critical voice is quieter or has disappeared entirely.

You change how you look at relationships, and you’re happier as a result. You might even change your relationships.

Life is easier and happier than it has been in a long time.

So, if you are ready to
Smile more
Love more
Have more fun
Be kind to yourself

Email me at meredith@meredithlrichardson.com
And we can set up a time for virtual coffee and talk about how I can help.

Fall is in the Air

Submitted By: MarkForCouncil2022@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I was reminded that Fall is almost here as I took down the canopy and folded the table from the final Master Gardener Association booth at the Manzanita Farmers Market on Friday. As I’ve done for many years now, I thought back on the summer’s garden question highlights. While It was a lot of work, I’m going to miss hosting the booth at the Market, and having the opportunity to connect with Manzanita citizens, other locals and visitors alike.

The conversations I’ve had with a variety of people — voters, county residents and regular visitors — have clearly outlined to me what is on people’s minds and what thoughts they have about possible solutions.

I, too, have been thinking and formulating possible solutions that I will bring to the City Council if I am elected, and as I continue to attend Council and other committee meetings.

The biggest issues are Livability of our Community, the City Budget, Short Term Rentals, and Safety. Many of these topics are interconnected, and include positive and negative aspects. It is the job of the City Council to listen to citizen input, then make informed decisions. While discussions on these topics often bring out strong opinions and passionate sentiment, I will listen to all, weigh the options against the fiscal and regulatory constraints, and work with my fellow council members and mayor to end up with solutions that we can all live with.

Please vote for me for City Council on November 8 so we can all dive into the work that needs to be done. Visit my website www.MarkForCouncil2022.com for more information about how I will bring ideas and action to our city’s government.

REMINDER: The Truth about the Economics of Logging

Reminder: 6:30pm Tuesday Sept 13th “The Truth about the Economics of Logging”

North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (NCCWP), which advocates to protect our local drinking watersheds, is excited to announce an upcoming talk with economist Ernie Niemi, “The Truth about the Economics of Logging.” A Q&A will follow. This free zoom event will take place on September 13 at 6:30 p.m. PT. Here is the LINK TO REGISTER or at www.healthywatershed.org

For 40 years, Niemi has documented the external costs of timber production in the Pacific Northwest, with a special focus on timber workers, their families and their communities. He will speak with NCCWP about the realities of the economics of the logging industry as it currently stands, and realistic economic ways forward for our community that are not extractive and destructive. Neimi will explain why logging is no longer an economic growth factor for our communities—in fact it actually jeopardizes the real economic drivers on the coast, which are quality of life (clean air and water) and recreation in our beautiful forests, beaches and rivers. Niemi’s talk will address the need for economic considerations of climate change and the biodiversity crisis, and provide tips for speaking up about the value of our forests.

A reminder that Jeff’s JW Merc roadside “pop-up” booth will be in Wheeler THIS TUESDAY (Sept 13th) from 12-5. We set up in front of the same building where you would find Pelican & Piper’s newly expanded retail store (across from the train stop). THANKS SO MUCH for all of the pre-orders (it really helps!) – to that end the picture pretty much shows you the items which will still be available (full gallon honey, half-gallon honey and full gallon real Vermont maple syrup are all sold out) – i’ll have a good amount of the glass jars real maple syrup. Local bee pollen will still be available, some quarts, pints and one-pound jars of raw Buckwheat too. “Everyday-ish” raw local honeys will include quarts of Oregon Raspberry and Oregon Blueberry – also available in pint jars – and a Snowberry/Fireweed/Big Leaf Maple jar from Brookfield will be on the table. Other one-pound jars of raw honey include Star Thistle, Blueberry, Meadowfoam and a certified organic collection from Hawaii. See you on Tuesday – there are no more delivery slots available for this trip but we’ll be back soon with another trip dedicated to just that. Any other pre-order requests should be made ASAP directly to Jeff – by text to the cell: 208-424-0042, through the JW Merc Facebook page or via e-mail: jwmerc@gmail.com. THANKS! JW
