DJ Life will provide the tunes for the New Year’s Eve party at the Pine Grove in Manzanita to get us in the mood for the Parade!

Come celebrate New Year’s Eve with your community on Saturday, Dec 31, starting at 7pm. This event is sponsored by Fulcrum Community Resources.

Festivities will include a Gratitude Jar reading, a giving tree, food, music and costume prep for a Parade to the beach and back at midnight. Bring musical instruments and noise makers to herald the New Year during the parade!

To get sparkled and dressed up for the parade, there will be a box of costumes to borrow from. Or go to Heart of Cartm in Wheeler on Saturday, Dec 31, between noon and six. They will have their workshop open and materials available to make fun costumes ala their famous Trashion Show. Donations for use of the space and materials appreciated. Or dress up at home before you come.

Soup and bread will be provided by Wild Grocery and Café in Manzanita. The soup will be vegan and gluten free.

Pick a treasure from the Giving Tree of unwrapped gifts. Bring an unwrapped gift to share.

All gratitude submissions from the 4th Annual North Coast Community Gratitude Jar project will be read aloud and stored in a community archive. What happens to your gratitude? It ripples out and supports community spirit. To participate, visit one of our local Gratitude Jar hosts, and write who/what you are grateful for on the provided slips of paper, and place in the jar. Or submit to our virtual jar online at www.communitygratitudejar.com through December 30th. This is free for all ages to participate. In need of a stool cover

Hi BBQ neighbors!

Some of you know me because of Pacific Northwest Dirt Fishing which has to do with metal detecting. I had my 4th back surgery on November 10th, obviously detecting is out of the question for me during recovery.

The next best thing, other than my husband, is my love for creating art! I am able to spend time on and off in my “She Shed” but I have a problem. I have the perfect 12″ round stool that I am unable to sit on due to it having no cover.

Does anyone have a 12″ round, padded stool cover with elastic to keep it in place? Does someone want to make one? I don’t care what it looks like, I just need to be able to sit and not fall off.

LNWC Annual Meeting and Speaker Series: The Role of Red Alder in the Oregon Coast Range

On January 12th, 2023 the Lower Nehalem Watershed Council will be hosting both their Annual Meeting and a presentation w/ Andy Bluhm, OSU’s Associate Program Director of the Hardwood Silviculture Cooperative, who will share new insight into a common tree in the Nehalem Watershed, the red alder.

The LNWC’s Annual Meeting will start at 5 pm. The Annual Meeting consists of board elections, selection of board officers, and the Annual Report. All members are welcome to attend to vote in board elections. The Annual Report will be a summary of council activities in 2022 including progress reports on restoration designs, planting projects, and regional collaborations. It’s been a busy year for the council so we hope you’ll come early to learn about what we’ve been up to.

Andy Bluhm’s presentation on red alder will begin at 7 pm. This presentation will introduce the characteristics of red alder and summarize the ecological role that red alder plays in the Oregon Coast Range. We’ll look at how red alder fits into the big picture of PNW ecosystems then examine the red alder’s effect on diversity, site productivity, community resiliency, and ecosystem function. Specific emphasis will be placed on the function red alder has in riparian systems and it’s influence on riparian communities.

In addition to a B.S. in Forestry from the University of Minnesota and an M.S. in Forest Ecology/Silviculture from the University of Georgia, Andy has spent the last 20 years at OSU as the Associate Program Director of the Hardwood Silviculture Cooperative- focusing on the biology and management of red alder. Other research projects at OSU have included directing the red alder management program for the OSU College Forests, managing a long-term study on alternative silvicultural practices, installing and measuring a Swiss Needle Cast research plot network, and coordinating the PNW Permanent Sample Plot network. His main duties include everything from education and outreach, data collection to growth and yield modeling and everything in between. In his free time, he enjoys exploring PNW old-growth forests in pursuit of big trees.

Andy is an expert on this foundational tree in our watershed and will have a wealth of information to share with us. Hopefully, everyone will walk away from this talk with a new appreciation for Red Alders and the roles they play in the Nehalem.

Part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up.

Standing in for the author, Eugene Jerome is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley.

Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, and her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style.

This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”

On November 30th 2022, the Tillamook Board of County Commissioners had a public hearing to discuss Ordinance 88. According to Bill Sargent, county counsel, the ideas behind this ordinance have been floating around for years, and have been presented to many administrations, but no boards before now have let it get to this level of consideration. The ordinance was brought before the board by Terre Cooper, director of the Tillamook County Economic Development Council.

Ordinance 88 is known as the Business License Fee Ordinance and shall be administered by the Economic Development Council of Tillamook County. A copy of the Ordinance can be found here:

Some fun facts about Ordinance 88:

-Ordinance 88 forces all businesses in unincorporated Tillamook County to pay a yearly $75-300 fee and register with the county, or else pay heavy fines.

-According to section 13 Violation and Penalties “A. Any person convicted of violating any of the provisions of this ordinance shall be punished by a fine not to exceed $600 for any one offense. The fine commences seven (7) days following notification of offense. Each day constituting a separate offense.”

-According to Section 13 Violation and Penalties “B. Inspection and Right of Entry. Whenever they shall have cause to suspect a violation of any provisions of this ordinance, or when necessary to investigate an application to, or revocation of a license under any of the procedures prescribed in this ordinance, officials for the enforcement or administration of this ordinance, or their duly authorized representatives, may enter on any site, or into any structure, for the purpose of investigation providing they do so in a reasonable manner. If an owner or occupant denies access for an inspection, the County will seek a warrant. No secured building shall be entered without the consent of the owner or occupant unless under authority of a lawful warrant.

The long and short of it is: most if not all of the public at the hearing was against Ordinance 88. Business owners were against more fees, against more regulations, against the outrageous fees for violations of the ordinance, and most prominently against giving the county the right of entry to their business, especially if that business was run out of their home. Citizens voiced concerns over the vague language in the ordinance. It’s not really clear what the “benefits” of this ordinance are, or how the money will be used specifically to help businesses. The director of the EDC, when questioned, said that the answer is presented in the ordinance itself and that she didn’t feel she needed to elaborate.

The second public hearing about this ordinance was cancelled, and instead Commissioner Mary Faith Bell suggested a work group to discuss revision of the language of the proposed ordinance.

Also, the Tillamook Economic Development Council is having a public meeting about Ordinance 88 on MONDAY, DECEMBER 19th, at 8am. You can attend in person or via ZOOM. Details here: www.edctc.com/edc-minutes

What is the fate of Ordinance 88? We don’t know yet. I’m not confident the Commissioners will vote against it, because if they were not in favor of it they would not have let it get this far. But what about the fact that it seems that the businesses in our county are against it? I wouldn’t bet on that stopping the ordinance- if the commissioners had taken that into consideration they would not have ordered the work group to “revise” the ordinance. I would think they would just have left it alone and let it go up to vote at the next board meeting, if they were planning on voting against it anyway. They seem committed to passing this ordinance.

Educate yourself about this Ordinance, make your voice heard, email the County Commissioners with your objections and concerns (contact the commissioners by going to this page: www.co.tillamook.or.us/bocc), join the work group, and attend the EDC meeting on Dec. 19th if you want to maintain your business rights and stop Ordinance 88.

The Rockaway Lions Club will be providing Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner fixings. Fresh fruits and vegetables, canned goods, and of course a turkey are provided to special families in the School District 56 area. The Lions are a wonderful group of people doing this work.. Also in Rockaway Beach is the Meals for Seniors, Inc. program. This organization is open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the meeting hall next to the Catholic Church. Meals are also delivered to clients. A hot meal can be had for just a $4 donation, but you can still join them for lunch even if you don’t have the $4. Just $24 will pay for six hot and nutritious meals. $96 will serve that senior for a month. See more at mealsforseniorsrockawaybeach.org.

The North County Food Bank is in Wheeler. Financial donations enable them to purchase wholesome food at wholesale prices from the Oregon Food Bank, local grocers, and other sources. With inflation hitting all of us, it is hitting the NCFB and their ability to buy food. Please help them out. More info www.northtillamookcountyfoodbank.org/

Nehalem Senior Lunches are provided at the Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church in Nehalem on Tuesday and Thursday. Lunches are also delivered. Again, sometimes lunch and a personal touch are what people need.

Still time to help the Methodist Church in Nehalem with all their outreach projects: Lunches for kids during the school break, their food and clothing bank, and their Senior lunch Program on Tuesday and Thursday. They also deliver lunches. Mark on your check which program you want to support.
