An introduction and discussion of kumihimo: origins and history; traditional and contemporary applications; equipment and materials; and a demonstration of basic braiding techniques. Attendees will be invited to try their hand at a basic kumihimo pattern already set up on a marudai (round stand).
Completed braids will be displayed, and lots of pictures in a PowerPoint will accompany the discussion.
Pete McDonnell is a native of southeastern Washington State, a 40-year resident of Seattle, and a full-time Manzanita local since 2020.
He has been making kumihimo braids off-and-on since 1995, in the spare time he had in his career as a clinical trials data manager at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Research Institute, and as a singer in a wide variety of musical projects.

Local historian Mark Beach lectures in his popular local history class (which he is offering again this January!), that Manzanita was built as a summer getaway. Many of us call Manzanita home because we were visitors here at one time and decided that we love the natural beauty of our forests, ocean, and landscape. Still more have opened up their homes as STRs to bridge the affordability gap to make their long-term dream of living in Manzanita possible. Some citizens are worried to see the streets where they live have more transient housing than full-time residents.
The concerns are real. We are a vacation destination. Visitors who don’t follow the rules can be disruptive to a neighborhood. The livability factor that comes from knowing your neighbors is diminished when your house is surrounded by short-term rentals; the risk of damage, garbage, and noise can increase when the occupants of a home change from week to week or even day to day. Additionally, day visitors have a significant impact on our city’s infrastructure.
I attended most of the STR Workgroup meetings to learn what we could accomplish. From this earlier work, the City Council has established a permanent STR Committee to address many ongoing issues.
As we move forward, we also need to consider land-use and property rights laws that place legal limitations on what ordinances we can implement. We need to make prudent, legally-sound decisions to enhance our village character.
This is a complex issue that I, the City Council, the City Manager, and the Short Term Rental Workgroup have been studying for years. We must continue the research and the discussion to find solutions that work.
If you, too, want to see solid and reasonable government decisions, I am asking for your vote on November 8. Learn more about me at www.MarkForCouncil2022.com.

Don’t miss our last outdoor show of the year!
All proceeds go to support this fabulous artist.
Astoria native, Heather Christie was born singing to a family of musicians on the Oregon Coast. As a baby she attended her dad’s rock shows under her mother’s poncho. Early on she picked up her mother’s 1942 Martin Guitar and began writing her own music.
Playing in bluegrass jams, country and gospel sing alongs, musical tributes, competitions, and radio theater… A Lilith Fair Finalist, Heather has performed nationwide, from solo artist, to full band, to the award winning FROGTOWN musical stage show, honoring the muse wherever she goes.
“Heather has developed her own brand of Lyrical Soul and it’s traveling down the road in a Folkwagon bus” ~Hipfish Arts & Culture

Let me reword my post:
The Governor’s race is close, if you want someone other than Tina Kotek, do nothing and we will end up with one of the other two candidates. We must be out-loud and SHOW our support for Tina K with lawn signs and our conversations.
Thank you community for bringing this foo-pah to attention and giving me the opportunity to clarify my intention!
And, come get lawn signs!
A little bit about us… We have dreamed for years of making our home near this area of coast. My husband, Joe, just got hired as a teacher at Neah-Kah-Nie middle school, making our dream possible! We are living with relatives until we find a place of our own. We have great renters history, are non-smokers, clean, and very quiet. We love this coastal community and hope to put down roots here. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any leads or suggestions!

We want your input on just how to start back up a new season of dance on the coast! Will you please open this document and answer these questions?
We look forward to this re-visioning process with you for a possible dance collective out here on the coast!
What we will be bringing to market…
Angelus (yellow peaches)
August Lady (yellow peaches)
Honey Diva (yellow nectarines)
Flavor Grenade (pluots)
Flavor Heart (plums)

We will see you there!!

A time to pause with a nice cup of chai and reflect on what’s unfolded over the past 9 months of 2022. Take your time. It’s been a lot!
When I was a kid my mom brought me into to see an expensive allergy doctor because I was constantly having ear aches and runny noses.
I remember the doctor putting on a cartoon to distract me while he pulled out what seemed like endless trays of allergy test needles.
As soon as I saw the needles I started to bawl. I must have been about 5 years old and it’s a memory that seared into my little brain.
After that awful jabby appointment, the doctor came back with the grand diagnosis of “She’s allergic to the changing of the seasons”.
My mom was so angry about that- and I was too! I mean poking me with a hundred needles just to tell me I’m allergic to weather?
I’ve been thinking about this lately because as an adult I realize I actually am extra sensitive to the turning of the seasons- we all are.
It’s something that ancient healing traditions around the world paid close attention to before there were artificial lights and cell phones to distract us from what nature is doing.
As we hustle along in this culture of information overwhelm, it’s easy to forget that the Fall Equinox stands like a big yellow road sign on the calendar reading “Slow Down”.
I happen to be really bad at slowing down- and if you are too, I hope this list of 8 ancient wellness practices for fall will help you take care of yourself as the season shifts.
When nature undergoes a rapid and massive shift in energy (fall and spring) we humans we most definitely are affected.
The good news is that part of staying healthy and grounded in the fall includes lots of lovely sleep and deliciousness- including pumpkin, spice and chai. (look for that back on our fall menu next week!)
To read all about how not to be allergic to fall this year

Have a wonderful Fall Equinox!
We will have our pumpkin chai at the farmers market tomorrow!
