Vintage Bottle Collection

Submitted By: seagate45@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
The two purple bottles were found around Tombstone, Arizona. The taller one dates from about 1890. The detail photograph shows the wavy lines on that bottle. The ginger ale “torpedo bottle” was excavated in Atlanta.

$90 for the collection.

Some background on soda bottles and sun-purpled desert glass:

THE STORY OF PURPLE GLASS AND “TORPEDO BOTTLES”
Purple glass, which is often referred to as desert glass or sun colored glass has been a popular collectors item for many years. Most pieces were originally clear pattern glass or pressed glass and date prior to 1914.
In the manufacturers in the manufacture of glass, the iron in sand caused glass pieces to become a characteristic aqua or green color. Around 1880 manganese was added to the process in an attempt to produce a clear crystal color. Manganese ions combine chemically with iron ions when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun over time, creating the beautiful amethyst color scene today. This manganese process was used until 1914 when Germany cut off the supply of manganese to the United States during World War I.
The depth of color change in individual pieces is determined by the amount of manganese used in the batch of glass in a given run; thus, some pieces attain a deep purple color while others are a lighter amethyst color. Flaking and chipping are common and purple glass. Within reason these imperfection should not detract from the value of an item in addition, small flaws created in old manufacturing processes, do not take away from the value of the item, but add to its character and stand as a testament to its antiquity.

Nineteenth-century round-bottom ginger ale and soda bottles, often called “torpedo bottles,” were designed to lie on their sides to keep cork stoppers moist, preventing them from drying out, shrinking, and allowing carbonation to escape. This design prevented the corks from popping out and ensured the drink remained carbonated.

Key reasons for the round bottom design include:
* Preventing Dry Corks: By keeping the bottle on its side, the liquid kept the cork moist, preventing it from shrinking or rotting, which would allow the pressure to pop the cork and lose the carbonation.
* Storage and Transport: The rounded base made it impossible to stand the bottle upright, forcing retailers to lay them on their sides.
* “Ballast” Function: Many of these bottles were produced in Britain and Ireland, and the round shape allowed them to be stored easily in the holds of ships as ballast to balance the vessel.
* Pressure Management: The design was often used for highly carbonated, in-bottle fermented, or soda drinks, as the round shape helped distribute the intense pressure, often combined with a wired-down cork.
These “round-bottom sodas” or “torpedo bottles” were popular from the 1870s until roughly the 1910s, eventually falling out of favor with the invention of the crown-style cap, which allowed bottles to stand upright.

Thank you, BBQ!

1920s-’30s “Ivory” Pyralin DuBarry Celluloid Clock and Picture Frame

Submitted By: seagate45@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
Ivory Pyralin DuBarry refers to a popular 1920s-1930s line of faux ivory vanity dresser sets produced by the Arlington Company (owned by DuPont). Made from celluloid, not genuine elephant ivory, these “French Ivory” items feature Art Deco styling and often include mirrors, brushes, and powder jars, frequently found with monogrammed initials.  Key Facts About Ivory Pyralin DuBarry:  * Material: It is a form of celluloid (pyroxylin plastic) designed to imitate ivory, sometimes described as having a butterscotch or yellow-orange tone as it aged. * Manufacturer: Produced by the Arlington Co., which was purchased by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in 1917. * Items: The sets commonly included hair receivers, trays, hand mirrors, brushes, powder jars, and shoehorns. * Pattern/Style: The “DuBarry” pattern is a specific, often ornate, Art Deco style. * Collectibility: These items are popular, highly collectible vintage vanity pieces from the early 20th century.  The clock doesn’t not work. Price is $30 for the pair.
We still have some other vintage items for sale. If you use the “green magnifying glass” on bbq to search by copying and pasting “seagate45@icloud.com“, it will bring up earlier items that are still available with the exception of:::: “SOLD”: {Photograph of Manzanita from Neahkahnie by Jack Bateman A Kimberly Morris handwoven rug. North Coast Pinball Monthly Update

Submitted By: Will@irace.net – Click to email about this post
Hello loves. Here’s what’s happening in and around North Coast Pinball this month.

Events

Thanks to Christy Kay and HUGGS for operating and sponsoring Teen Night, Friday 4/17 6-8 PM (third Friday each month), where teens play pinball for free. We also have free packaged snacks and soft drinks, and it’s a pleasure to see the art the kiddos make while they’re here. For more information or to donate in support of this program, reach out to Christy at (503) 800-1092.

Our March tournament was overrun with kids! It was our best turnout in awhile and it was so much fun. I’m grateful to everyone who came. We carved out a prize for the top scoring kid, and big congratulations go to Drake for winning the impromptu youth division. And congratulations to Mick for playing great pinball and taking home the trophy. See you this Sunday 4/19 5-8PM (third Sunday each month) for the friendliest pinball tournament on earth. Ask me anything!

Daily pinball tastings have resumed every morning at 10 and I’m glad to be doing them again. We cover pinball history, culture, technology, and skill in a free-flowing combination of show-and-tell and hands-on play. Book online: Airbnb.com/x/pinball

Two special new games are here

Pokemon has arrived at North Coast Pinball! I’m not much of a Pokemon devotee myself but I’ve been excited about this game since rumors started emerging a year or two ago. And I’m telling you—it’s fun. It’s really good and it’s fun. It might be the best game in the NCP collection. Come play it!

And I get asked about Medieval Madness more often than any game I don’t already have. My answer has always been “amazing game, I want it, too collectible, too rare, can’t afford.” Well, I finally found one and it’s here and it was worth the wait. If you’re a fan of late ’90s pinball you’ll understand my excitement when I say that we now have Medieval Madness, Attack From Mars, and Monster Bash all lined up together under one roof. And here they shall stay. Come play them!

Q1 donation results

There are two little donation jars by our front door for cash, coins, or leftover tokens. Each quarter I reset the jars and log the results, and once a year we select beneficiaries for your generous donations. This quarter the total came to $200, including a little extra I put in to make it even. This is down a little from last year and that’s the way it goes sometimes. You can learn more about the money we’ve raised and where it’s gone (and donate online) by visiting northcoastpinball.com/community .

Game of the Month: World Cup Soccer ’94

Congratulations to Kris (KMM) for his epic Whodunnit score of 7,302,154,190 in March. He received a one-of-a-kind “Grand Champion” medallion valued at 100 tokens. This month we’re competing on World Cup Soccer ’94. What I like about WCS is that it has fun ramps, a cool moving goalie, and a guy who shouts “GOAAAAAALLLLLL!!” If you take the top score and it holds till May, I’ll make a special medallion for you too.

Do you need pinball games? We have pinball games

We can rent a game to you for your private use, and we have games that can be made available for visitors to your business at no cost to you. Also we sell games sometimes. Get in touch if any of this interests you. Our stable of games that may be available includes Pin*Bot (and his bride), Star Trek (2013), Elvira (2019), Space Station, Hokus Pokus, TMNT (2020), Avengers Infinity Quest, and Mousin’ Around.

Maintenance tidbits

Did you know that we host a weekly “Tech Day” session every Tuesday at 3PM? It’s a free event but to participate you must RSVP before Tuesday morning by texting (503) 343-4783. No experience required, ask me anything. In the last few weeks we’ve cleaned Jaws, solved an electronics glitch in Getaway, improved the reliability of Uncanny X-Men’s autoplunger, ordered new bookcase optos for Addams Family, finally fixed the “auto-flip” feature on Monster Bash, fixed Rudy’s droopy eyelids, and moved a few games around to accommodate Pokemon and Medieval Madness. Come help and learn!

Community topics

International Workers’ Day, Friday May 1, 2026, is a day of solidarity: no work, no school, no shopping. North Coast Pinball will be open. After paying Dallas, I’m pledging all proceeds from that day to Consejo Hispano, which serves Latinx/a/e/o, Immigrant, Indígena, and Afrodescendiente youth, womxn and families across Clatsop, Columbia, Tillamook, and Pacific Counties. Own a business? Take the pledge yourself at DayWithoutAnImmigrantOR.com .

And finally I was recently approached by the team at Pride in Numbers, a community-led project gathering stories and experiences from Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ people across Oregon to inform programs, services, and policies. You can participate in their survey (which closes on May 31) by visiting prideinnumbers.org .

Welcome to Spring. Thanks for being part of North Coast Pinball. ♡

Samuel Ford Tallman
January 18, 1957-January 15, 2026

Sam was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Edward Tallman and Sarita Southgate. He lived his early years in Pacific Palisades, California, spending a month each summer at his family’s cabin in Falcon Cove, Oregon. Sam graduated from Lewis and Clark College and completed a Masters in Social Work from Portland State University. After college he moved to Nehalem where he worked in private practice as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker until shortly before his death.
In his early teens, Sam began to show signs of retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic eye disease that steadily progressed until by the time he was in his 50’s he was fully blind. Sam enjoyed cooking, skiing, playing golf and fishing–he was a big proponent of setting the hook at the slightest hint of a bite. Sam continued to use power tools to build furniture even as his vision declined. He was an avid football and baseball fan. Sam enjoyed creative writing, eventually self-publishing a novel. He was proud of his achievements and insistent about maintaining his independence.
Sam married Raechel Massie in 2000, and they divorced in 2004.
Sam was open about his alcoholism and proud of his twenty years of sobriety. He died from complications of diabetes.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his siblings Brian, Abigail, Ben and Hank, stepmother Vivi, and good friend Cynthia Palmer.
There will be a gathering to honor Sam at Handy Creek Bakery in Wheeler on Saturday, April 18, from 2-4pm.

GoFundMe for Christy Kay

Christy Kay, the owner of Rising Hearts Studio in Nehalem, OR, has been a tireless and gracious presence in the Washington and Oregon coastal communities. For the past six years, Christy has dedicated herself to helping others—often providing free sessions of healing, coaching, and grief support. She has done more volunteer work than paid work, always putting the needs of others first.

Recently, Christy received a serious medical diagnosis that requires extensive nutrient supplementation and months of care. This diagnosis has made it impossible for her to work, and she now faces mounting medical expenses. Her medical team has a plan to help her rebuild her physical health, but she does not have the funds to cover the treatment plans or keep her business afloat during this challenging time.

The funds raised through this campaign will lift a significant financial stress for Christy. They will help cover her medical expenses and ensure that Rising Hearts Studio can continue to serve the community while she focuses on healing. Christy has given so much to our communities—now it’s our turn to step up and support her. Please help Christy get the care she needs. Your support means the world and can make a big impact as she works toward recovery.
