Cannon Beach Library Hosts Poet, Artist, Author Jessica Mehta

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Poet, artist and author Jessica Mehta will discuss her writings and read her poetry at the Cannon Beach Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13.
This is a free, hybrid event; attend the event at the library or watch online: www.cannonbeachlibrary.org.
The award-winning interdisciplinary poet, artist and author is hosted by the library’s NW Authors Series.
The Oregon author of 15 books, Mehta will discuss “Decolonization on a Global Scale.” Her works have been described as organic, powerful and vulnerable. Space, place and ancestry are driving factors in her work.
Mehta has undertaken poetry and artist residencies around the globe, including the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-Upon-Avon and the Crazy Horse Memorial and museum in South Dakota. Her work has been featured at galleries and exhibitions in Washington DC, Sweden and New Mexico. She also was a Fulbright Senior Scholar.
“My goal as a person and an artist is to inform, create conversations and in many cases to educate—particularly non-indigenous audiences,” says Mehta, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. “The key word here is ‘goal,’ not ‘responsibility.’”
“The emotional, mental, spiritual and oftentimes physical labor of educating non-indigenous audiences is not for everyone. It is a gift some of us offer when, where and how we can. It is not a requirement of any Native person.”

Dirty Bird’s Community Compost Club

Submitted By: kelleywebb731@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Are you interested in worm farming/vermicomposting? It is super fun, does not require heat to break things down, and creates a beautiful soil amendment that you can use safely in your garden.
Join us on May 24th 5-7pm for our first Community Compost Club meeting on the site of the future home of Dirty Bird’s Garden Center (corner of Manzanita and Division). Email queenbee@dirtybirdsgardencenter to RSVP.
Dirty Bird’s Garden Center will be built on the vacant lot on the corner of Division and Manzanita across from Underhill Plaza. Until we have a building, we are doing programming and events with local partners to support top sustainability efforts.
Our first project is making compost from food waste. Food waste accounts for over 20% of landfill materials and production, transportation, and handling of food generate significant Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions and when food ends up in landfills, it generates methane, an even more potent greenhouse gas. We want to divert as much food waste as possible from our local waste stream through our Community Compost Club.
Members will work together to build a community worm bin that we can use for our household food waste. We will also help those interested in building home based vermicompsting systems.
Worms are magicians! Let’s help them help us.

World Labyrinth Day Sunday 5/6 – 8am at Neahkahnie Beach

Submitted By: centerpoint.healing.arts@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Dear BBQ friends,
Sand Spiral Labyrinth Walk this Sunday 5/7 at Neahkahnie Beach – free community gathering.
– 7:30am Meditation/ 8am Labyrinth Walk or walk anytime you like before the tide sweeps it away!
– Slow down, breathe deep and connect with the awesome beauty of Neahkahnie Mt and Ocean.
Folks have been asking me ‘Why Labyrinth walks?’ Well, I have practiced and guided Walking Meditation for decades as a Yoga Therapist as a way to cultivate present moment awareness, to ‘be’ peacefully with Nature. Then when I was part of the Intensive Cardiac Rehab program at Silverton Hospital OR, I guided Meditation Walks for patients and staff through a classic Labyrinth design on canvas that could be rolled out indoors or at beautiful outdoor destinations like Silver Falls State Park and the Oregon Gardens. When I transplanted to the Oregon Coast, the little kid in me found a magical combination of ‘all of the above’ practices in drawing spiral labyrinths in the sand. I take my rake and trace a spiral walking path. Hope you can come by on Sunday morning and walk with me for World Labyrinth Day. Let’s be part of a rolling wave of peace around the globe.
