Celebrate a Conservation Milestone With Us!

Submitted By: maijahecht@nehalemtrust.org – Click to email about this post
The Lower Nehalem Community Trust is proud to announce the official protection of 19.6 acres of forested tidal wetland habitat on the north edge of Nehalem Bay!

The project fulfills a vision first imagined more than twenty years ago, when LNCT launched the Protect the Edge campaign to safeguard and connect vital habitat from Alder Creek to Nehalem Bay State Park. These edge lands nurture wildlife, buffer neighboring communities from winter storms, filter water entering the bay, and provide access to connect with nature.

On Tuesday, October 28th from 3pm – 5pm we will gather at Alder Creek Farm to celebrate. Light refreshments will be served, followed by a short program and optional walking tour to the property (roughly a half mile walk on damp natural and gravel surfaces, or van shuttle available). We recommend water resistant footwear. All are welcome!

Headwaters Walk & Picnic Social

Join us on Wednesday for a nature walk on the Headwaters trail, a portion of the Oregon Coast Trail just north of Manzanita.

We will meet at 11:30AM at the South Neahkahnie Trailhead for a walk down LNCT’s Headwater’s trail to our stewardship benches. Paper bag your lunch and enjoy a midday break outside with friends. The walk is ~2.5 miles round trip, with a gentle incline.

Note—the Headwaters trail is uneven and mildly steep in some areas. To access the Headwaters Trail, we will meet at the Neahkahnie Mountain South Trailhead parking lot and walk down from there. Plan to wear shoes with a decent tread and dress for the weather.
Visit nehalemtrust.org for more details.

If winds are forecast to be above 20mph, this event will likely be rescheduled. Please check LNCT’s events calendar for updates.

A Tribute – Liberace and Liza at NCRD Nov 1st

Submitted By: pac@ncrdnehalem.org – Click to email about this post
Liberace and Liza – A Tribute coming to NCRD Nov 1st 7:00 p.m. New York City, San Francisco, and now they can add Nehalem to their resume! Several NCRD patrons have exclaimed excitedly when they heard of this show – “Best show we have ever seen!” The SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE called it: “Surreal- yet oddly perfect!”. Ok, it is a little unusual, since Liberace and Liza Minelli never actually performed together. BUT- this show imagines what it might have been like! It combines tribute, improv, virtuosic piano playing, powerhouse vocals, and comedy. Like Liberace, David Saffert is a classically trained pianist from Wisconsin. Working sans sequins he has performed with the Oregon Symphony, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Portland Opera, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the Schnitzer. He also appeared in two tv episodes filmed at the Liberace Mansion in Las Vegas. Jillian Snow, from NYC, is a powerful vocalist and sketch comedian who has cracked up crowds at the Laugh Factory, Gotham Comedy Club, 54 Below, Feinstein’s at the Nikko, and Portland Center Stage. Jillian was also involved in the U.S. premiere of “Liza, Liza, Liza’ and co-writing “Troll 2 The Musical” with her Emmy award-winning sister Jade.
Reserved seating $30, general admission $25. www.tickettomato.com/event/9671. PG-13.

Why does it have to be boring? This year we will try to make an Annual Meeting that you might actually want to attend. We will have a quick business meeting while we serve up some ice cream and then get on to some recognitions that are long overdue. Some of our most dedicated members, Owen Nicholson, Mark Beach, Lyla Hendrickson and Tom Mock, have served our organization in an exemplary way for years. Let’s take a moment and say a special thank you to them. Be at the Pine Grove at 3:30 on Thursday. See you there.

Pete the Cat is one cool dude as he strolls around in his new white shoes. Preschoolers
and their parents and caregivers can find out more about Pete the Cat’s adventures when
attending North Oregon Coast Symphony’s FREE Musical Storytime October 20 at the
Manzanita Library at 10:30. Musical Storytime is a hands-on musical activity for preschoolers.
This free outreach program is for children ages 2-5. This month’s story is Pete the Cat, I
Love My White Shoes and will be accompanied by flute player, Shelley Loring. Pete the Cat is
silly, fun, and has brightly colored illustrations. Pete loves his bright white sneakers so much that
he sings about them wherever he goes. Children will love singing along to this story. Loring will
talk more about her flute after the story is read and demonstrate the various sounds she can
produce. Then different wind instruments will be handed out for the children to play.
Similar events are being planned monthly in partnership between North Oregon Coast
Symphony, North Tillamook Library, Seaside Library, and Astoria Library. For more
information, visit the symphony’s website at www.nocsymphony.org., or seasidelibrary.org, or

The People vs. Agent Orange Film Playing in Tillamook

Submitted By: Rhonda.nccwp@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (NCCWP) will be showing the film The People vs. Agent Orange at the main branch of the Tillamook County Library located at 1716 3rd Street in Tillamook on Saturday, November 8th at 1pm. Doors open at 12:30pm with the film starting at 1pm. We hope you can join us.

The Agent Orange catastrophe did not end with the Vietnam War. Today, the world over, a primary chemical of the toxic defoliant (dioxin) controls weeds in farming, forestry, parks, and playgrounds. It wreaks havoc on the human genome, causing birth deformities and deadly cancers.

This investigative documentary interweaves personal with political struggles as it follows two heroic women who are leading a worldwide movement to hold manufacturers of these pesticides accountable.

After the film, people will have opportunities to learn more about the pesticide-related challenges Oregonians continue to face, especially in the fight to keep surface drinking water safe. Carol Van Strum and Susan Swift, two of the activists starring in the film, will be on hand to answer questions after the movie.

NCCWP wants no more logging and pesticide use in community water sources regardless of who owns the land, and wants an end to pesticide applications near where people live, work and recreate. Safe drinking water and clean air are part of the public trust that we all are entitled to have.
