Repair Cafe Volunteer Spotlight at the Heart of Cartm

Submitted By: hoc.repaircafe@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
We have a repair cafe coming up this Saturday from 3-5. If you’ve got something to fix, come on over to the heart of cartm website and sign up!
www.heartofcartm.org/repaircafe

And today we want to hold up the work of expert fixer Dick Park with this spotlight!

We have some wonderfully handy people volunteering with the Repair Café every month and have decided that you all need to know more about them! In this newsletter we are highlighting Dick Park, one of our expert fixers who has been offering his cheerful competent repair support since almost the beginning! Dick generously allowed me to interview him and learn more about how he gained his skills. Hopefully through this we can also learn from his experiences!

Dick Park was born on a farm in southern Idaho and was blessed to have a father who was mechanically inclined that he could learn from. Following him around on the farm, Dick learned by watching. His father couldn’t just call someone to come fix his farm equipment – there wasn’t the time or money for that – so he fixed things himself. Fortunately, farm equipment was made to be repaired.
Dick loved to tinker with things as a child, taking things apart and then seeing how they go back together. When he was in 7th grade, he built a tractor out of the parts that were available to him.
Shortly after high school his uncle recruited him to come to the Pacific Northwest to work for Boeing. The company hired him to be a draftsman and then finding that he didn’t yet know how to do the job they enrolled him in a 14-week course. This opportunity gave him the training that he would use his whole adult life.
As a young man Dick served in the Navy, attended the Oregon Institute of Technology, and got married! He worked for the University of Washington in their applied physics lab doing underwater research for the navy. During this time he says he watched the engineers doing mechanical things and learned from them, not just how to do something but also how to approach the problem of making something work.
After his retirement he started doing computer design, always going back to the design before he would make something. He loves wood working. He and his wife Kathy designed and built their home together, and Dick has built many wooden items including boxes and furniture.
At the repair café, Dick specializes in fixing lamps, wooden items, anything electronic and is fearless about taking things apart.
Dick and Kathy are moving away soon, and we will miss them. We will miss Dick’s presence at the repair café!

MuSICAL STORYTIME FOR PRESCHOOLERS AT THE MANZANITA LIBRARY

Submitted By: sdawagner@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo is the featured story for North Oregon Coast Symphony’s May Musical Storytime. This zany picture book follows a boy who attends a concert next to the zoo. Bored with the performance, he begins dozing off when suddenly the animals take over
the stage. The humorous verse is full of zoo creatures and instruments that children will want to learn more about. The artwork is vibrant and
engaging. Children will be giggling at both the song and the illustrations, such as the one of a hippo playing a tuba.
These free readings, for children ages 2 to 5, will feature a live accompaniment by multiple North Oregon Coast Symphony musicians; including flute, oboe, drums and violin. After the reading, preschoolers will participate in making their own music with a variety of instruments provided.

The violins used in this program were purchased
through a grant funded by Clatsop County Cultural Coalition and Oregon Cultural Trust. We thank both organizations for their generosity.

The first reading will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 10:30 at the Astoria Library. There will be a second reading at the NorthTillamook Library in Manzanita on Monday, May 11, 2026 at 10:30. The
last story time will be held at the Seaside Library on Wednesday, May13, 2026 at 10:30.
Similar events are planned monthly in partnership between North Oregon Coast Symphony, North Tillamook Library, Seaside Library, and
Astoria Library. For more information, visit the symphony’s website at www.nocsymphony.org. or www.astoria.gov/dept/Library at 503-325-7323.

Manzanita Farmers Market opens May 15! Fridays 4-7

Ooooh it’s almost time! The Manzanita Farmers Market opens May 15 and will continue on Fridays from 4-7pm through September.

It’s been an incredibly warm winter, so we can expect some earlier harvests than usual. I can’t wait for those juicy sweet strawberries, fresh greens and herbs, crunchy carrots, and beautiful flowers. And this year, we’re very excited to have fresh oysters at the market, direct from Netarts Bay!

This year we are working on improving accessibility at the market. We will have the beach wheelchairs on site and available to use first come, first served while you visit the market. We are adding an ADA picnic table on a gravel pad, and we are working with Public Works to improve our accessible parking and access to the food court and music area (coming in July!).

We also are happy to continue our Triple Up SNAP match program this season. Spend $20 in SNAP benefits at the market and get $60 to spend, every week! Visit the market info booth to learn more and run your SNAP card.

We’ve got so many awesome vendors this year, both returning favorites and some exciting new businesses. We will have live music every week, I’ll be posting the schedule soon. Can’t wait to see you there!

Conscious Aging and Community Connections May 11

Aging in Place; a preparedness conversation
May 11, 2026
2-4pm at Pine Grove Community House

Our local community has been lauded for outstanding emergency preparedness. Yet we are completely unprepared for the one thing we know for sure is coming!

The US Dept of Health and Human services says that 77% of people over 50 have not planned for how they will age and die. If asked, most people say they want to “age in place”. We vaguely imagine ourselves living out our years in our current homes, at our current level of ability and then dying peacefully in our sleep.

Unfortunately, the reality is that for most people, the last decade may be one of physical and mental decline, and/or illness. It becomes increasingly difficult to be independent, and a high percentage of us will live our last years alone as we lose the ability to care for ourselves.

Conscious Aging and Community Connections presents local programs intended to build community and help us live our best lives. Our May 11th conversation will focus on the importance of planning ahead while we are still able. We will explore what we can do now, to live as well as we can, for as long as we can, in our own homes. We will explore other options and consider pros and cons. No doubt there will be more questions than answers, but at the very least, there will be good conversation with others who are facing similar challenges.

The list of questions is long. Who will care for you? How will you get around? Who will manage your bills? Is your current home suitable for aging in place? (It’s not just about ramps and grab bars!). What else do you need to consider before you invest in expensive adaptive equipment and/or remodeling?

The conversation, and questions we generate, are meant to inspire and motivate us to act now while we are still able. NOW is the time to get clarity about what you want and need, to research your options, plan for help, perhaps make changes to your home, get your documents in order, and maybe have that talk with your family.

Please join us for this important and no doubt, lively conversation!

All ages are welcome (may even be more beneficial for younger people!)

Your donation of $5 supports the Pine Grove Community House.

When you buy plants from the Nehalem Bay Garden Club’s annual plant sale you are helping your community as well as adding green, color and food to your yard.

That’s because the Garden Club donates proceeds from the sale to local organizations that share the Club’s mission. Since 2020 the Club has granted almost $28,000! Thanks to everyone who has purchased plants in the past so we are able to do this.

Past recipients include Wheeler Waterfront Park, Salmonberry Trail, Tillamook Estuary Partnerships Native Plant Nursery, Pine Grove Community Center, Food Roots, The Wonder Garden at the Hoffman Center, Alder Creek Farm, Coyote Ridge Community Garden, Nehalem Bay Health Center, Tillamook Early Learning Center, North County Food Bank, Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church for their food programs, Nehalem Elementary Garden Program, and the mural at Nehalem City Park. Grants are awarded at the end of the year.

This year the sale will be held as usual on Mother’s Day weekend. Unlike the past few years, it is ONE DAY ONLY.

Saturday, May 9th from 10-4.

No early entries please.

Location of the sale is 43080 Northfork Rd, Nehalem at the junction of Hwy 53 and Northfork Rd.

Start at the blinking light in Nehalem at 7th Street, which turns into N Fork Rd and go 5 miles to the end of N Fork Road. The sale is on the left. If you are coming from the north, you will turn left at the blinking light; if from the south you will go straight instead of continuing on Highway 101.

Available at reasonable prices will be all kinds of plants: hanging baskets, planters with colorful flowers, perennials, annuals, vegetables, tomatoes, shrubs, trees, herbs, ground cover and houseplants.

Also on offering will be Mother’s Day gifts and a raffle. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 6 for $20.
