Check out our Kayaking On The Bay video series to help get you ready for your paddle: www.netartsbaywebs.org/kayaking-on-the-bay
We have two different kayak trips on May 22, with one trip for novice kayakers and one for intermediate level.

All equipment will be provided.
Restrictions: Tweens and older are free to join this trip. People with serious medical conditions should exercise caution in joining. Anyone under 90 lbs or over 230 lbs should notify us during registration to ensure we have the proper gear.

For instance, the journey may involve short portages and using teamwork to carry the kayaks with us. All equipment will be provided.

KMUN Benefit featuring JOHN GORKA LIVE May 12
Thursday, May 12th at 7:00pm
Charlene Larsen Center for the Performing Arts (the PAC)
588 16th St (16 & Franklin) in Astoria OR
Tickets at www.PartnersForThePac.org or 503-338-9132
Mask and proof of vaccination are required.
Please join us for a very special performance at the Larsen Center – Astoria PAC with the marvelous JOHN GORKA May 12th. Come spend an evening with “the preeminent male singer-songwriter of the New Folk Movement” (Rolling Stone); known for his stunning and emotional baritone, dry wit, and introspective lyrics. The intimate setting assures a delightful, engaging and interactive evening!
Gorka’s last Astoria show sold out – so get your tickets today.
This concert is a fundraiser for our community radio station – KMUN.
The modern renaissance of folk music began when John Gorka won the Kerrville Folk Festival’s New Folk award in 1984, and it grew to maturity when he released his debut album “I Know” three years later.
Here was a singer-songwriter with a striking baritone voice that made you feel like you’d been hearing it all your life, with the songwriting chops to take on and see into nearly every type of song—from personal pieces about love and sadness, to bemused observations about daily life, political thinking-aloud, and sheer unmitigated whimsy.
Nearly four decades later, John still calls himself an aspiring folksinger, and his music has just kept getting deeper and better over his more than 15 critically acclaimed albums. John isn’t on the road as much as he used to be, so don’t miss this chance to catch a folk classic. You’ll leave the theater smiling.

The class is limited to 10 attendees and will be held in the Hoffman Clay studio starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 9, 2022.

Karl Marlantes to Discuss His Novels at Coaster Theatre Saturday
The in-person presentation will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the Coaster Theatre Playhouse, 108 N. Hemlock St. Admission is free. Proof of Covid vaccination is required. Masks are optional.
Born in Astoria, Marlantes grew up in Seaside and attended Seaside High School, where he was student body president. Marlantes also attended Yale University. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University and earned a master’s degree.
His first book, “Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War,” written in 2010, was called by the New York Times “one of the most profound and devastating novels ever to come out of Vietnam– or any war.”
It is based on Marlantes’ combat experience as an infantry officer with the 1st Battalion of the U.S. Marines from 1968 to 1969. He was awarded the Navy Cross for leading an assault on a hilltop bunker complex, which is at the core of “Matterhorn.”
Marlantes also received a Bronze Star, two Navy commendation medals for valor, two Purple Hearts and 10 Air Medals.
His second book, a memoir published in 2011, was “What It Is Like to Go to War.” It is about his return as a civilian and life as a Vietnam War veteran.
In 2019, Marlantes turned in a different direction with his novel, “Deep River,” about the logging industry, canneries and labor organizations on the Columbia River in Oregon and Washington in the early 20th century.
The book follows a Finnish family that leaves Finland and makes its way to Astoria and Southwest Washington, much like Marlantes’ grandparents did when they left their homelands.
Marlantes’ presentation is sponsored by the NW Authors Series, which welcomes authors monthly from September to May and offers the Writers Read Celebration for local writers.

General admission is $8 for ages 11 to adult and $5 for senior citizens and youth ages 10 and under.
Many will remember the comic strip Li’l Abner by Al Capp. The musical is based on the story within the comic strip, and is a comedy set in the hillbilly town of Dogpatch, USA. The Sadie Hawkins Day Race is set to happen, whereupon a girl who catches her man gets to marry him. Daisy Mae hopes to catch Abner, but the Yokumberry Tonic Mammy makes him drink every day which makes him strong also apparently makes him rather “neutral” when it comes to matters of the heart.
Nestucca High School is well-known for its tradition of putting on spring musicals. The first musical produced in the Nestucca community was 60 years ago with Mack Pimentel directing. One of Mack’s own students, Kathleen (Schenck) Serven, took over as director in 1997 when he retired. She and other drama directors helping her have kept the musical tradition alive every spring, all except the last two years, due to the pandemic. Assisting Kathleen this year is Heidi Trambley as Assistant Director and piano accompanist, Kelli McMellon as drama director, and Christal Winesburgh as Serven’s Co-Director in the orchestra pit.
Nestucca musicals feature a community orchestra, put together with musicians from Waldport to Rockaway Beach and out to Hillsboro. The orchestra meets every Sunday for two months to prepare for the show.
This year’s musical stars Junior Lionel Brown as Abner, Senior Tessa Thompson as Daisy Mae, Junior Henry Cook as Marryin’ Sam, Sophomore AJ Johns as Mammy Yokum, Alinna Mendoza as Pappy Yokum, and Senior Dennis Jaynes as Earthquake. Junior Liz Chez and Senior Yaky Gracia co-manage the stage.
Come and enjoy the show with us, have some laughs, and support our local musical theater students in their first musical in two years. Don’t miss it!

LNWC Speaker Series: Marine Heatwaves and their Effect on Coastal Fishes
On May 12th, 2022 Jessica Miller, OSU Professor of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences, will talk about a very pertinent issue, Marine Heatwaves. Marine heatwaves are increasing in frequency and intensity around the world. From 2014 to 2016, anomalous atmospheric conditions resulted in the largest known marine heatwave in the northeast Pacific Ocean, and another heatwave occurred in 2019. These extreme ocean warming events impacted all levels of the food web, resulting in reduced condition of many marine species. The abundance of Pacific Cod in the Gulf of Alaska declined by more than 75%, leading to the closure of the fishery and a disaster declaration.
Jessica Miller and her colleges are documenting how this heatwave affected the growth and condition of Columbia River Spring Chinook salmon and the growth and phenology – or timing of life history events – of Pacific Cod in the Gulf of Alaska. They combine field studies with laboratory analysis of fish ear stones, which are balance and orientation structures that lay down daily growth rings, to age fish, determine their hatch date, and reconstruct their growth and migratory history. Jessica will provide an overview of what we are learning about how these ecologically and economically important species responded to these extreme ocean temperatures, which are predicted to occur regularly under future climate change scenarios.
Jessica Miller is a Professor in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences at Oregon State University. She is also a member of the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station and leads the Marine and Anadromous Fisheries Ecology Lab in Newport, Oregon. Her research focuses on ecology of marine and anadromous fishes, with an emphasis on how environmental and climate variation affect their growth and survival. She received a BA in Zoology from the University of Montana, a MS in Fisheries from University of Washington, and a PhD in Biology from the University of Oregon.
The talk will be on May 12th at 7 pm, hosted on Zoom, and is free to the public. The zoom link is us02web.zoom.us/j/83353175742 or on the Facebook event at www.facebook.com/lnwc1.
