Rainy Day Village Picnics and Town Hall in the Park July 9 and July 16

Rainy Day Village Picnic and Town Hall in the Park

Please join us on Saturday, July 9th at 11:00 at Nehalem City Park, 12705 Hugo Street, for a Town Hall and Picnic. Let’s get together to eat, socialize, and talk about the future of Rainy Day Village. Bring a picnic and a chair or a blanket and visit with old friends and make some new ones. Treats provided! At 12:00 there will be a conversation about where Rainy Day Village can go from here.

And Save the Date: July 16th will be a follow up meeting at 2:00 at the same place: Nehalem City Park (and with more treats!) Come and help plan the future of Rainy Day Village in more detail.

Rainy Day Village (RDV) is part of the Village Movement which started in Boston over 20 years ago to create a new model for aging and ways to support older adults who desire to remain in their homes, allowing them to stay active and engaged in their communities. A local group began meeting in 2017 to discuss how this movement might support and enrich lives on the northern Oregon coast. We soon realized that rather than focus efforts on creating a local non-profit, it would be advantageous to join an existing village organization. In early 2019, RDV became the 11th village under Villages Northwest, “hub and spoke” model operating in the Portland area. As a spoke we have access to the considerable experience of Villages NW to help build RDV. For more about Villages NW go to www.villagesnw.org. For more information about the Village Movement go to Village to Village Network www.vtvnetwork.org

Robust efforts were made to build Rainy Day Village by constructing the foundation that would be needed to have volunteers provide services for paying members and even more importantly to create a vibrant network of community connections: people living their lives with pride, grace and independence in safe, healthy and socially connected ways. The 20 year history of the Village movement has shown that the relationships built among villagers has added depth and meaning to people’s lives way beyond the help they receive with daily chores.

RDV was poised to open with members and volunteers in May 2020. Unfortunately, the launch date has been postponed indefinitely, due to COVID. Since the start of the pandemic RDV has been in a holding pattern.

The Steering Committee has decided it’s time to assess where we are going and hope that interested parties will attend one or both of the upcoming meetings to help plan the future of Rainy Day Village on the North Oregon Coast.

Hike Netarts Spit: Dunes, Birds, and More

Submitted By: shelby@netartsbaywebs.org – Click to email about this post
Netarts bay was created thanks to the formation of the Netarts Spit. This 6+ mile stretch of sandy land is an important buffer between the ocean and the bay and serves as an important ecosystem. Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS is partnering with Portland Audubon, Oregon State Park, and researchers at Oregon State University to share the story of the spit, how it formed and is changing, and share how you can help scientists learn more about the plants and animals using this area!

Park rangers will be on hand to help share the story of this park and how it is changing. “The spit is a very dynamic place and ecosystem! The farther you walk down, the more immersed you get in the beach, ocean, and dunes,” says Chrissy Smith, Executive Director of Friends of Netarts Bay. “Just a month ago, with Portland Audubon’s guidance, we found snowy plover tracks and nest scrapes. Snowy plovers are listed as a threatened species. Portland Audubon has been recruiting community volunteers to help look for birds and nests. Finding evidence of these birds on the spit is exciting since there has not been a documented nest for many years.”

Researchers from OSU are also mapping different beach grasses growing on Oregon Dunes. They will also be joining us to talk about the native and nonnative beachgrasses, why the type of beachgrass matters, and what you can do to help scientists learn more about how they are spreading and growing. “Mapping each of the beachgrasses, which differ in several important key traits, is essential to understanding how they will affect dune functions and services, such as dune shape, coastal protection, and species diversity across Oregon,” says Risa Askerooth, graduate student researcher at OSU.

Risa continues, “You likely wouldn’t be able to recognize these dunes 100 years ago, since invasive beachgrasses have changed them so much. These beachgrasses, which were intentionally planted, are causing dramatic changes by stabilizing sand, improving protection for coastlines, and decreasing habitat for some native species.”

It is ~6 miles to the end of spit (12 miles round trip) and participants should expect to spend a full day exploring and hiking. If you are unsure if you want to commit to the full hike, Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS and partners will plan a few stops and offer the option to head back with volunteers to help you get to your cars.
Join us on this beach journey, learn about plover and beachgrass monitoring efforts, and explore the spit and how it is changing over time!

Date and time: July 1 from 8 am to ~3:30 pm

What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes, water, lunch, and snacks are a must! Binoculars are highly encouraged as a strong focus will be placed on birds! The climate can change quickly along the coast, ranging from warm to cool and breezy, so please bring the gear you need to stay comfortable.

Difficulty: Moderate + due to the length and challenges of walking on soft sands and wet sand. Participants can opt to join for a portion of this event. This event will take place outdoors. If bad weather develops, an alternate plan will be communicated to the registered participants.

Registration Required: Find the event registration list at www.netartsbaywebs.org/events

Cost: There is no cost to attend this program. Donations are appreciated. From June 15 to September 15, all contributions will be matched by the Charles A. Becker Foundation in support of our organization and programs. Learn more about the Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS matching gift challenge on our website www.netartsbaywebs.org.

The Coaster Theatre Playhouse Celebrates 50 Years of Community Theatre

The Coaster Theatre Playhouse Celebrates 50 Years of Community Theatre

Dust off your platform shoes, grab your cool threads and head to the Coaster Theatre Playhouse on Wednesday, June 29 to celebrate the theatre’s 50th birthday with a day of entertainment, groovy tunes from the 1970s, costume contest and silent auction.

The open-house party runs from 2 to 5 p.m. in the theatre’s courtyard and from 6 to 9 p.m. in the theatre.

In 1972, Maurie Clark, purchased The Coaster building, which housed a roller skating rink, and, after an extensive remodel, presented Cannon Beach with the Coaster Theatre Playhouse.

The Portland State University Summer Stock Company opened at the newly remodeled theatre on June 29, 1972. That winter, Cannon Beach residents, with D.K. Smith and Bill Steidel at the helm, put on the first community production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This began a tradition of producing community plays and musicals throughout the year for over the past 50 years. Generations of North Coast residents and visitors have participated on and off stage at the Coaster Theatre, often creating lifelong friendships and a few marriages.

In 2001, after Clark’s death, the Coaster Theatre became a nonprofit organization that continues to be dedicated to presenting live theatre and events that engage residents and visitors of all ages.

The Coaster Theatre is celebrating all year with a selection of shows and playwrights that are audience favorites. The theatre is also offering monthly special event concerts to celebrate this momentous anniversary. Details about the 50th birthday party, plays, musicals and special events are at coastertheatre.com

Upcoming shows and events at the theatre:
Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, July 6 – Aug. 6
Auditions for Gramercy Ghost, July 25 & 26
Clue: The Musical, Aug. 10 – Sept. 10

TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM PLAN OPEN HOUSE

Submitted By: mthompson@nehalem.gov – Click to email about this post
DRAFT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM PLAN READY FOR REVIEW

NEHALEM BAY – The Cities of Manzanita, Nehalem, and Wheeler are finalizing a draft, joint Transportation System Plan and are seeking public review and feedback. The latest draft includes an updated list of potential transportation projects and improvements that could be built within each city and in the region over the next 20 years.
The public is invited to learn more about the projects and improvements that will be included in the draft TSP and give feedback through an online survey and at an in-person open house on June 15, from 4-6 p.m. at the North County Recreation District in Nehalem. There will be no formal presentation and visitors can stop by at any time. A link to the online survey will be posted to the project website (nehalembaytsp.org) beginning June 10.
Public feedback is needed to ensure that the proposed TSP projects reflect each city’s unique transportation needs as well as challenges related to travel on U.S. 101.
The updated list of projects and materials incorporates recent feedback from the public, the three cities, and collaboration with the Oregon Department of Transportation. The final TSP will describe transportation goals, policies, and potential project investments and strategies, while considering travel needs for people who walk, use cars, ride bicycles, move freight, or ride the bus.
For more information about the TSP and to sign up for the email list, visit nehalembaytsp.org or contact ODOT project manager James Feldmann: james.feldmann@odot.oregon.gov, 541-257-7669.

Writing Alive! Workshop Thursdays 3:00 – 6:00 pm (on Zoom)

Submitted By: artlight7@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Please join us for a 6-week Writing Alive! Workshop in the 3+1 format: 3 writers + 1 facilitator. This format features a one-hour dedicated writing time + 25 minutes of focused, positive feedback for each writer.

We begin with a brief arrival time as writers gather on Zoom followed by a review of our writing guidelines (see below). Two writing prompts are offered and reviewed aloud. Writers then sign off from Zoom and write on their own for an hour.

When we return to Zoom, each writer reads her work aloud, usually twice (or she may choose to pass — always an option). The remaining two writers + the facilitator offer individual feedback and discuss the strengths of the work while the featured writer listens to the feedback. We then move, in turn, to the work of the remaining writers.

We share time, at the end, for each writer to talk about that day’s writing process — what is arising and feels new; how is this aligned, or not, with the writer’s life; what is arresting the writer’s attention and shaping the work most strongly?

Writers may use the offered prompts or follow their own outline if working on an ongoing project.

WA! Guidelines for Our Writing Practice:
To create a sacred, safe space for our writing process, we follow these guidelines in Writing Alive! Workshops:

1. We honor the writer by listening with full, undivided attention.
2. We write what we want to write, free to ignore the prompt and write what is most alive for us.
3. We share by reading our work aloud. Everyone has the option to pass.
4. We hold in confidence all that we share and hear in the workshop.
5. We offer respect and dignity to each other and to ourselves.
6. We listen to all writing as fiction. The writer may inform us if the work they are about to read is not fiction.
7. When we respond to the writing, we speak about “the writer,” “the narrator” and “the character(s),” rather than referring to the writer as “you.”
8. Since the writing in the workshop has just been written, we treat it tenderly. We respond with what we like, what stays with us, and what moves us in the writing.
9. When we offer feedback, we focus more on the writing, less on our personal experience or the private life of the writer.
10. When we read our work aloud, we refrain from adding introductions, explanations or apologies. We read and let the work speak for itself.
11. As our writing is discussed, we listen quietly, like a Buddha. In this way, we discover what others hear in our words.

This workshop is based on The Amherst Method for Writers and Artists. Dana is a certified facilitator of this approach. She offers her workshops for women of all ages, in all genres, at all levels of experience.

The shared community of Writing Alive! Writers includes approximately 35 writers in several states including Oregon, California, Idaho, Washington, Texas, Michigan, Vermont and New York. Writers work in their favorite genre — poetry, essay, short story, memoir, creative non-fiction, science fiction, speculative fiction, etc. Common responses to shared writing prompts, giving and receiving positive feedback for what is working well in first-draft writing, and a focus on the essence of one’s individual strengths result in lively, thoughtful, renewing experiences, week by week.

Details of this workshop:

Format: 6-Week Writing Alive! 3+1 Workshop
Day/Time: Thursdays, 3:00 – 6:00 pm Pacific

Dana’s work, both written and visual, has been published locally in The North Coast Squid. She has facilitated 3-5 weekly Writing Alive! Workshops since 2015, in person at Tillamook Bay Community College, the Tillamook Public Library, The Wilson River School in Tillamook, The Center for Contemplative Arts (Manzanita) and at her home, The Bend at Moon Creek, in Blaine, Oregon. Introduction to Monotypes & Monoprints

Visual Arts Workshop

Introduction to Monotypes & Monoprints
with Ben Rosenberg
June 17—19 | 10:00am-4:00pm
Tuition $240 | Materials fee $10
Hoffman Center | 594 Laneda Avenue | Manzanita
This workshop will require proof of vaccination

Join Ben Rosenberg as he introduces the principles and practices of creating monoprints and monotypes. Monotype is a distinctive print made by pressing paper against a painted or inked surface. When creating a monotype, it cannot be replicated again. It is a highly individual creation, much like painting, as it allows for spontaneity, “happy accidents,” and working along a plate surface to bring a wide range of marks that can be obtained through the creation of an image.

Topics include basic theory and use of color and composition in working with water-based, mixed media, and a variety of surfaces. This workshop will involve both conceptual approaches and direct observations using still life, the figure, abstract composition, and a variety of student investigative resources. You will explore various monotype styles, techniques, and media used with rollers, stencils, textured surfaces, brushes, and various inventive wiping tools to create unusual one-of-a-kind prints.

Responses to Shaukya’s Art:
“I found Ms. Dekker’s paintings to be incredibly full of life and force. Each painting I viewed had its own distinct character, although sometimes it would take some time before I could tune in to a painting’s particular quality and personality. They all communicated a deep sense of intimacy, of vulnerability — of something deep or mysterious being shown. A secret being shared. Beautiful, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes utterly joyful — the time I spent with her paintings was a ride full of feeling and delight.”

“Shaukya’s paintings vibrate with an intriguing energy, spellbounding the viewer into an unanticipated realm. She relates directly to the canvas with her hands rather than allowing an intermediary paint brush which enables her work to convey an even more direct, living presence. What an unexpected delight to come upon this until now unknown bold work!”

“Viewing each painting became a participatory experience; one filled with wonder and beauty. I felt brightened. I combined with her images at depth. When thus viewing or “living in” Shaukya’s paintings, I found new world; a world of deep resonance with Light and now a place I can live in. May others find her art and be so fortunate!”

Theater Review

I will start this by stating that, while I am not a theater critic, I do enjoy live theater.
On Friday we attended the opening of Arsenic and Old Lace and really enjoyed the show. The NCRD theater is beautiful and an intimate setting. The set was really well done, looking professional, fitting the stage and handling the cast easily. And the cast, wow, 14 community theater actors, working together, hitting their lines, and, clearly, having fun. Hats off to the Riverbend players. Great job of acting and directing. If you are looking for an inexpensive, fun evening of entertainment right here in Nehalem, I highly recommend that you get tickets for this show.

Our pastor is retiring and we want to invite you to the celebration.

Who: Steve Wolff

Location: Camp Magruder

Come to say thanks, farewell, congratulations and everything that goes along with a pastor retiring in order to pursue new adventures.

There will be a short worship service with communion.

Please drop by and wish Steve well!!
