A tale of two maple products + next date of Jeff’s “pop-up” booth in Wheeler

Submitted By: jwmerc@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
It is said there are about 125 varieties of the maple tree in the world – 13 of them native to North America. The predominate variety used to make real maple syrup in the New England/eastern Canada areas is the SUGAR maple (Red maple is also used to some extent) – of which sap we boil down during a brief ‘window’ each spring to make the wonderful (and wholesome!) sweet stuff used in coffee, baking applications – and more. MEANWHILE – on THIS side of the continent a little-known group of knowledgeable beekeepers monitors the unpredictable spring weather conditions here locally for the Vine and Broadleaf (AKA: Bigleaf) maple tree “flow” – when the food supply from those two species provides a key ingredient for honeybees to make a VERY special raw honey. Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate so it’s rare (once every three years on average) that enough of this delicious food finds it’s way into a jar bearing the name – now is one of those times! Jeff and JW Merc has – for now – a sufficient amount of raw Oregon Maple Blossom honey available in anticipation of our next “pop-up” visit to Wheeler (on the landing in front of the building where you find Pelican & Piper) – Tuesday, March 15th – from at least 1-5 pm. Quarts are $25 each, pints $14 and there is just one half-gallon ($50) available (the usual array of other honeys/jar sizes will also be there). Pre-orders are a MUST. Contact Jeff directly through the JW Merc Facebook page – or send a text directly to his cell (208-424-0042) – and of course e-mail works equally well! Speaking of real Vermont maple syrup – please notice the picture of an early sample from this year’s “boil” which has already begun there. We won’t see any of that new stuff for quite some time – but Jeff still has a good number of delicious half-liters of both Amber Rich and Dark Robust available in glass jars – $16 each or take two for $30. See you in downtown WHEELER on TUESDAY MARCH 15TH between 1 and 5 – please get your Oregon maple blossom honey orders in ASAP!!! JW

Warm and toasty 5-week old pups looking for fun-loving, athletic and Aloha-filled homes!

These little boys and girls – along with their mamma – are living the Aloha life in a dear friend’s garage on the big island after she & I rescued all ten of them from a scary situation. The pups are now 5+ wks old and based on nightly FT visits with my friend, I’m happy to report they are fat, happy and getting excellent care. Their personalities are emerging!

We expect them to grow into 45-55 lb dogs whose lines include but are not limited to: Pointer, Pittie, Ridgeback, Lab. Mamma is a total love bug (sadly, only 8 mos old). Father is known, quite sweet, yet denies any knowledge of situation.

If you’d like to meet the little fockers, at least virtually, email with your good intentions.

UPDATE ON HIGH SPEED INTERNET FOR TILLAMOOK COUNTY

Submitted By: weneedhighspeedinternet@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
THANK YOU! to the 249 people that signed the letter in just 10 days. We were able to read the letter and present the list of names at the February 18th Joint Meeting of the entities that make up Tillamook LightWave.

Bev Stein did an amazing job of facilitating this meeting that consisted of all three County Commissioners, all of the members of the TPUD and Port of Tillamook Bay boards, plus a good number of invited guests. The conversation on bringing high speed internet to every home in Tillamook County took a decisive step forward from an “if” to a “how.” This is great news!

This meeting was just a workshop so no official business was conducted. What this means for the residents of Tillamook County is that there is still a lot of work to do toward making the vision a reality.

Please lend your voice to the cause by signing on to the letter at tinyurl.com/weneedhighspeedinternet. Since the original presentation, signatures have continued to pour in and we would like to present an update at the March 8th regular meeting of Tillamook Lightwave so that it will go into the record.

Thank you all so much!! You made, and will continue to make, a difference.

New Scholarship Opportunity

RE: Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS announces a new scholarship opportunity for Tillamook County graduates.

Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS (WEBS) works to build a community of environmental stewards around the Netarts Bay watershed and the areas between Cape Meares and Cape Lookout. We recognize the role that students can play in this stewardship, and we are pleased to announce a new scholarship opportunity for Tillamook County residents that plan to enroll in any University, College, Junior College, or Trade School and work toward a degree or certification in the field of natural resources.

“WEBS is committed to supporting local students who care about our natural resources. We are thankful for the support we have received from our community. As a result of these contributions over the years, we are excited to announce a new scholarship opportunity open to individuals pursuing careers in science and conservation that inform future natural resource decisions related to the Netarts Bay watershed,” says WEBS Executive Director Chrissy Smith. “We are excited to be able to pay it forward and hope this will make it easier for residents and students to start a career in science, watershed health, bay ecology, oceanography, or a related field.”

Multiple scholarships may be awarded each year at the discretion of the board and based on applicants. This scholarship opportunity is available to any graduate of Tillamook County schools and current residents. Applications are due February 28, 2022. Funds will be allocated via the Tillamook School Foundation. More information can be found on the Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS website at www.netartsbaywebs.org/scholarships.

Questions about this opportunity can be sent to Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS by emailing director@netartsbaywebs.org.

Let’s Get Internet Along the 6!!! and More!

Submitted By: weneedhighspeedinternet@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
We CAN HAVE High Speed Internet Throughout the County.
There''s a big meeting this Friday and we need to show that the community wants this. Please sign and share the letter.
————————————————————– Tillamook County has been building a massive Internet fiber system throughout the county for over 20 years, but it has not been available to the general public.
Because of the pandemic, millions of dollars in Federal grants have become available in an effort to get high-speed Internet to EVERY home in rural America. We need to let county leaders know that we want and need high-speed, AFFORDABLE Internet. Please sign the letter for better, cheaper Internet throughout Tillamook County!
It, along with the list of signatures will be presented to the County Commissioners, and the boards for TPUD, the Port of Tillamook Bay, and the board of Tillamook Lightwave, which is the entity that has been managing the building of the fiber system.
To sign the letter go to: tinyurl.com/weneedhighspeedinternet
The letter was prepared by an Action Team of Local Citizens. If you have questions you may email WeNeedHighSpeedInternet@gmail.com
Thank you!
——————————————————————- THIS IS THE TEXT OF THE LETTER:
To our County Commissioners and to the board members of the Tillamook PUD, the Port of Tillamook Bay, and Tillamook Lightwave;
Through your collective efforts over the past twenty-two years Tillamook Lightwave has achieved the vision of building a robust fiber-optic network throughout our county that has helped businesses and public entities thrive.
We now ask that you make every effort to bring accessible and affordable high-speed Internet to every household in Tillamook County.
The need is great. Utilizing the Internet is no longer a luxury. It is a solution to keep us connected; not only to each other, but to the world. It is a tool, a teacher, and sometimes a lifeline. It has become as necessary as any other utility and is used on a daily basis by nearly every resident in the county.
But access is limited by high costs, vast areas with no coverage, and painfully slow speeds. For a large portion of our county, both Internet and cell phone coverage are unavailable. This includes areas like Oceanside, Miami-Foley Road, and the dangerous Highway 6 corridor, which claimed seven lives last year. You have the power to change this.
We are families, farmers, students, artists, workers, creators, entrepreneurs, retirees, travelers on the roads, long time residents, and senior citizens. We live downtown and down long, lonely roads with no neighbors for miles. We, the citizens of Tillamook County, ask that a new vision for the future of Tillamook Lightwave be set. A vision that has room to continue the great work that Tillamook Lightwave has done for industry, but one that also has room to encompass the people.
Thank you for your time and your service.

From the Heart of Cartm to the Hearts of Volunteers

Submitted By: jessi@heartofcartm.org – Click to email about this post
Over the last few weeks, we have seen the most generous of human beings walk through the doors of our heart space in Wheeler to vacuum up muddy water, repair holes, paint walls, organize tools, arrange discarded furniture into cozy vignettes, plant flowers, greet customers, hang photos and light candles.
I am humbled by the generosity of our community volunteers who show me over and over what it means to reimagine waste and love unconditionally. Our volunteers put love into the discards, the junk, the tangled messes, the dirty and the broken and turn those items into treasure.
Heart of Cartm is full to the brim, overflowing with the compassion and creativity of this community and we want to share this with as many of you as absolutely possible. On Monday from Noon – 1pm, Heart of Cartm is serving heart-y soup for the soul from Heidi at The Roost in Wheeler. The store is open Noon-6pm. Come on in to craft a little valentine (like those in the photo!), find a little treasure or sign up to join our team of volunteer hearts.

From my heart to yours,
Jessi Just
