White Clover Grange Celebrates Spring with “A Garden Affaire” Event March 26th
The White Clover Grange invites the community to A Garden Affaire on Saturday March 26 from 10 am to 3 pm. This traditional springtime event, a kick off to the 2022 gardening season, features local vendors selling vegetables, plant starts, flowers, microgreens, native plants and baked goods. The Sharpenater will be on hand to spruce up your tools.
At noon, Hope Stanton of Aldervale Native Plants will give a talk and answer questions, and at 1 pm Teresa Retzlaff of 46 North Farm in Olney will share her experiences with “dry land” farming and gardening. (Suggested donation for talks is $10). The Nehalem Garden Club will host a seed exchange featuring some free packaged seeds as well as seeds collected by local gardeners. Community members with seeds to share are encouraged to bring them and trade.
And, the White Clover Grange is proud to announce the relocation of the Shelly Bowe Memorial “HomeGrown” farm stand, previously located in the parking lot of Kendras River Inn. Opening for it’s third season, we expect to be open for this event, stocked up with early garden needs.

Join in this spring celebration by bringing canned goods to donate to our local food pantries.

Alana Garrigues

Alana Garrigues is an intuitive artist and poet, and co-host of {within} community, an online collective of female artists and makers. Her artwork is deeply informed by the nature of the Pacific Northwest and a sense of innate relationship between human story, memory, and art itself.

Two things inspired me to do this work. First and foremost, working with Master Cabinetmaker, James Krenov. His books and his teachings have inspired my work throughout my career. The second inspiration was reading the book “Overstory” by Richard Powers. One of the main characters in the book is a majestic Redwood Tree.

Rick Crawford

Rick Crawford is a sculptor and jeweler in Astoria, Oregon. He strives to utilize as much repurposed materials in his pieces as possible. His influences range from interests in the natural world, ancient history and archaeology, and ancient tribal iconography, as well as the various cultures that he encounters in his travels.

My name is Drew Reid and I am a local filmmaker and videographer. In early June I will be shooting a 25 minute short film based on an original script, using a local cast/crew and set around the Nehalem Bay. The film is called in2Egress and this is the plot.
After 17 years in a state psychiatric facility, Henry Tohl is returning to his hometown. Local apprehension is surpassed only by his family’s dread of the truth Henry is bringing with him.
Henry looks to be in his early to mid 40’s. I’m not looking for an actor. I’m looking for an original personality. Memorizing is not necessary, just a solid grasp of the dialogue. Richard J Huneke (Dick), 83, loving husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and great grandfather died Sunday, March 6, 2022 in Portland, Oregon.
Dick was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 27, 1938 where he honed his basketball skills at the local Boys and Girls Club. After graduating from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, he attended St Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ on a basketball scholarship, played for 4 years, and graduated with a BA degree in 1961. He joined the US Army as commissioned officer and, with his new wife, moved to Stuttgart Germany where he was stationed for 3 years. Two of his three children were born there.
After his discharge, Dick and his family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he began his career at Northwestern Bank Corp in Human Resources and obtained a MA degree in Industrial Psychology. In 1974, while employed by Medtronic Inc as Director of Personnel for International Operations, he and his family lived in Paris, France for 3 years. After his return to Minnesota, Dick began his own management consulting business, Richard J Huneke & Associates where he worked until his retirement in 2002.
He and his first wife ended their marriage in the mid 1980s and he and his current wife, Janet Robinson were married at the end of 1986. They moved from Minneapolis to Portland, Oregon in 1991 and to Manzanita in 2010 where Dick started a men’s cooking group, joined a book club, was a member of the Rinehart Clinic Board, and performed in several Riverbend Players productions. He and Janet returned to Portland in 2017. Dick is survived by Dr Janet Robinson, wife of 35 years, cats, Laverne and Shirley, 3 daughters, 2 stepdaughters, 5 sons-in-law, 13 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, and many beloved friends.
Dick was the eternal good guy and charismatic to all who knew him, particularly when it came to storytelling in his Brooklyn accent. He was deeply passionate about family, friends, and work. After his stroke in 2018, Dick was just as passionate about his recovery particularly his rehabilitation at Sara Bellum’s Bakery and Workshop for Adults with Acquired Brain Injury where he worked hard to regain skills, and was joyfully encouraging of others.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 30 at 1 pm at St Philip the Deacon Episcopal Church, 120 NE Knott, Portland 97212. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to St Philip the Deacon Episcopal Church or Sara Bellums Bakery and Workshop,

Annual Community Show — TREASURE

Dan Haag, Trails & Outdoor Recreation Coordinator for Tillamook County Visitors Association, is gathering input from community members in an effort to determine what facilities are needed in Tillamook County. Is there an area that could use more parking? Are trailheads and public areas in need of more garbage receptacles? What areas need more public restrooms or port-a-potties?

“The last two years have shown the importance of addressing facilities needs countywide,” Haag said.

Additionally, Dan is looking at trails around the county to determine which ones could potentially be connected. Connecting trails would give our residents broader access to physical activity and get our visitor traffic to disperse during the busy season. He is also seeking suggestions on county recreational needs such as kayak launchers, safety and interpretive signage, and more.

“My main priorities are helping find ways to enhance our existing trails for the good of our communities and helping to lessen foot and bike traffic on Highway 101,” Haag said. “Getting our friends and neighbors outside and staying healthy has never been more important.”

In April and May, Haag will be holding community listening sessions in North, Central and South Tillamook County to discuss these same topics. Keep an eye out for dates and times.
