Mayerle for Manzanita: Gratitude from the Campaign Trail

Submitted By: mayerleformanzanita@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I’m Brad Mayerle, and I’m running for Manzanita City Council.

As election night nears and the campaigning starts to wind down, I’ve been reflecting on this wild ride I hopped on this past May. They call it the campaign “trail” for a reason. Parts are straight and narrow, some wide open, and other parts are twisted and circuitous…and there are many forks in the road. It’s been a journey for sure, and one that has mostly brought me pleasure—for a multitude of reasons.

First and foremost are the people I met along the way. I instigated numerous meetings with a variety of people—from residents, property owners, businesses, city officials (past and present), experts, volunteers, and, yes, even my opponents and some of their supporters.
I want to thank each and every one of them for “taking my call” and taking the time out to tell me their stories and perspectives, educate me about all the nuances, and, most of all, encourage me. I’ve received unexpected support from some of the most surprising places. “Surprising” because some have labeled me “the outsider” (even though I’ve had a home here for 22 years). I think I get this label because I’m not the status quo, and I don’t have an established reputation—good or bad—around town. However, I feel this represents many of us who live more quiet lives and don’t feel the need for exposure about how we participate and contribute to the community in our own subtle but impactful ways.

Secondly, I’m inspired by the folks who genuinely care about our community but have felt like their voices have not been heard and are finding new venues to rise above the noise of common communication channels, like social media or speaking up at public events—places where many of the loudest voices reign. Through the campaigning process, I’ve discovered that groups are forming, made up of like-minded people banding together to create louder and more informed voices about the concerns of many. This is democracy at its finest. As a city councilor, this is what I hope to facilitate in the future—creating venues and opportunities for everyone to be heard and encouraging people to formulate their ideas and find their voice so we can bring this community together.

Lastly, and more selfishly, is what I’ve learned about myself. The past several months have been a time of tremendous growth and discovery for me. I’ve learned you can teach an old dog new tricks (i.e., running for office). And that your past can play a tremendous role in what you can contribute to the future. The years I spent as a dentist are paying back in spades in ways I never imagined. I rediscovered how much I love talking with people and hearing about their lives and ideas. I’ve realized how the lessons I’ve learned in my personal and professional life have set me up for the potential to make thoughtful policy decisions that take a number of variables into consideration. And I’ve discovered, once again, a genuine sense of community—an amalgamation of varying knowledge, viewpoints, ambitions and aspirations.

I could go on and on about my experiences along the way, but I think you get the gist. My blog, which chronicles my daily campaign activities, thoughts, and personal stories, can help you fill in the blanks. Please take a look: bit.ly/bradsdailyblog And to read the unsolicited endorsements from people I’ve met on the campaign trail, go to: bit.ly/votingforbrad

Wheeler Voters Change direction Write in Heidi Stacks for 2-Year Council Term

Submitted By: nedtouno2@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Wheeler Voters – If you are not satisfied with the direction in which Wheeler has been going the past two years – Write in Heidi Stacks for a 2-Year Council Term (underneath Clif Kemp’s name on the ballot)!

When you open your ballot, you will see that Clif Kemp is unopposed for a two-year term. Mr. Kemp was appointed (not elected) to the City Council about two years ago. While some of us weren’t necessarily attending all City Council meetings, asking questions of our elected officials to hold them accountable to everyone in Wheeler, the Council was making decisions that have placed the City of Wheeler in major legal and financial jeopardy. That is an unavoidable and very unfortunate fact (whatever your stance on the development proposals that have divided our community).

Wheeler is paying hefty legal fees to defend the City in federal court and in actions before the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA). The City has a small budget and is considering the sale of assets to cover on-going legal expenses. Regular operating expenses are being reduced – have you noticed the marked decrease in staff and public service hours at City Hall?

You do have a choice if you want Wheeler to change direction! Write in Heidi Stacks for the two-year term on City Council. Heidi previously served on City Council and as Mayor and has always taken seriously her responsibilities as an elected official. She educates herself on best practices of councilors and city councils in Oregon. Heidi is a tireless volunteer for emergency preparedness and you can count on her to show up for Wheeler. Heidi and her family have lived in Wheeler for decades. Heidi will help Wheeler ‘stop digging’ and find a way through the current legal and financial morass.

Vote today for Heidi Stacks – write in – two year Wheeler City Council term!

Mark Wants Safe Access for All

Submitted By: MarkForCouncil2022@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I’ve spoken with residents who aren’t able to join many of the activities we often take for granted. Imagine not being able to attend Muttzanita’s beach games, or participate in a beach cleanup activity, or even attend the Farmer’s Market, because the ground is not stable enough to navigate. There’s an affordable product that allows safe access for everyone to beaches and areas with rough ground: Mobi Mats (shop.mobi-mat.com/).

I contacted the Lincoln City Visitor Center recently to learn how we could follow their lead, buy and install the Mobi Mats here in Manzanita. Many communities up and down the coast are now using these mats.

Lincoln City was able to pay for the Mobi Mats with Transient Lodging Tax money earmarked for tourism. The justification was that they would receive publicity value in source markets that would be equal to or greater than the cost of the mats.

The mats can be rolled out in the spring, then rolled back up in the fall, and are compact and easy to store. One side benefit noticed was that more beach visitors used the mats to access the beach, reducing foot traffic on the dunes.

Let’s look at this affordable solution to increasing safe and easy access not only to our amazing shoreline but for events such as the Manzanita Farmers Markets for both residents and visitors!

I’m Mark Kuestner, and I’m asking for one of your votes for the two open City Council positions for Manzanita City Council on November 8. Visit my website, www.MarkForCouncil2022.com to learn more.

Word & Image ~ Now in its sixth year!
Through October the gallery will feature artwork and writing created over the summer in a response project called “Word & Image.” Each writer and each artist creates new work in response to one of three pieces submitted by their partner.

A writer might create a new poem in response to a watercolor, for example. A photographer might make a new image in response to a prose piece. The resulting new works will be printed on broadsides, which will hang in the Hoffman Gallery, as well as published in a book.

Smiley Brothers Salmon Harvest

Another great looking Coho harvest year for the local food banks under the Smiley Brothers program. The first couple days of rain have given us 836 salmon with 1400 already canned. It could be another record breaking year with many still to come and lots of rain on the way. Our financial goal this season is to raise $20,000 to offset processing and canning costs. This harvest is run by all volunteers, donations and cannery’s processing and canning “at cost”. We partner with ODFW, Bell Buoy, Fish People, Neahkahnie High School, North Fork Nehalem Fish Hatchery, Tillamook Creamery Assoc, Eugene Schmuck Foundation, and Tillamook food banks and Fulcrum Community Resources. MARY LEVERETTE: OFFICIAL POSITION ON BOTTS MARSH, LLC

Submitted By: ml2@comcast.net – Click to email about this post
Dear Wheeler Voters,

I am Mary Leverette and I am running Wheeler City Council.

It is unfortunate that unfounded rumor has found its way into this election. I would like to make a few points clear.

I am not, nor have I ever been, employed by, or a representative of, the Ulbricht family who own Botts Marsh, LLC.

I have no vested interest, nor do I stand to gain if this project moves forward or disappears.

I have met with Mr. Ulbricht on two occasions when I was seeking information on his plans for the development. I did this as an concerned citizen who wanted to separate fact from fiction.

I value open and honest communication and firmly believe that if sitting Council members would have sought out a solution that respects the interest of ALL Wheeler stakeholders, the city would not be facing a lawsuit now. As a City Councilor I will seek to hear from all of our citizens, business owners, land owners, and visitors to listen and learn. The best, most productive solutions will be found through consensus.

Please feel free to contact me at 503.449.8445 or via email at ml2@comcast.net

I, like so many others, love this small town and wish to care for it. I would be honored to have your vote.

Respectively,
Mary Leverette

All Saints Day

You may hear a church bell ringing several times this coming Sunday morning. That’s because All Saints Day will be observed on Sunday, October 30 at Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church.
During our morning worship service, we’ll say aloud the names of those people from our congregation and our community who have passed over the last year, and ring our church bell to remember and celebrate each one. It’s a rather lovely old tradition, and one that speaks to God’s love for – and the inherent value of – every one of us. If you know of someone in the community who has passed since November 1, 2021, please email the church at nehalembayumc.org and let us know that person’s name.
Morning worship starts at 11 am. Please join us if you would care to join us and hear you loved one named and remembered. All are welcome.

Misinformation and untruths

Submitted By: mokihanagirlkauai4@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Dear Neighbors,
Last fall a group of citizens met with Wheeler mayor Doug Honeycutt and we asked how many people had actually responded to the form about what they wanted in Wheeler’s Vision Statement. Doug’s answer was 44. And yes that’s 44 people out of a little over 400 took the time to reply.

If you don’t believe me go to city hall and ask. It had been published by one candidate that 144 people had taken the survey.

And I think most folks don’t realize that the developement Ken Ulbricht proposed DID meet the required 25 ft height restriction. I bet you also didn’t know that he intended to put a public walking path for the community on the waterfront also. He even said he’d entertain the idea of a small amphitheater so the town could have concerts n community events there.

One proposal had adorable cottages that would have improved our town’s image. Another had the much needed employee housing for the business he was building. And ODOT did a traffic survey which said there would be little impact. The train brings in much more traffic than we can even park here.

Every proposal has been shot down for a vision 44 people responded to. Where are these voices being listened to I ask you?

Did you know he has been a leader involved in saving the Falcon Cove old growth forest and that’s why he has reserved Bott’s Marsh for future generations?

Please vote for Dave Bell and Mary Leverette, people who will listen to everyone, not just the ones who agree with them. And write in Heidi Stacks too. She knows the ropes. With an objective voice we can succeed as a town!! Mudslingers never get the job done in society. It’s the people who believe all citizens should participate that do.

Thanks,
Cynthia Simmons

Ballots are in your mailbox…or staring at from your kitchen table. Or perhaps they have already been signed, sealed and delivered. It’s an exciting time of the year when we get to exercise the privilege of making our voices heard with our vote—a chance to stand up for the issues we care about and influence how our tax dollars are spent.

As you know, I’m running for Manzanita City Council. If you haven’t had a chance to learn more about me, please peruse my daily blog. bit.ly/bradsdailyblog Each day since August, I have chronicled all my campaign activities (along with some personal stories)—from meeting people in the community, meeting with specialists who can help us meet our challenges, and volunteering. I also discuss my thoughts about some of the issues our town is facing and the new things I’ve learned, as well as outline what sets me apart from the other candidates and the folks who have led our town in the past.

Also, consider reading the unsolicited endorsements from Manzanita residents I’ve met on the campaign trail. bit.ly/votingforbrad

Mark Talks About Teamwork

Submitted By: MarkForCouncil2022@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Our Manzanita City Council is composed of five virtually equal volunteer positions: a mayor, and four city councilors. It’s a great example of a team working toward a common goal. Our community benefits when that team is in sync.

Each council member has one vote on any issue that comes before them. A majority vote is necessary to pass legislation.

I’m asking you to give me a seat at the City Council team table by voting for me in November.

By now we all know many of the issues that are facing Manzanita and its citizens. The question you need to ask when you receive your ballot is “Who will make the team better and be able to help that team move forward?”

I have attended virtually all City Council meetings over the last 3 years, as well as the Short Term Rental Workgroup and Planning Commission meetings. Check the box for “who knows the background of the issues?”

I am a former Vice President and President of a local union and I know how the Manzanita City Council functions. Check the box for “who understands how government entities work and function?”

I have a long history of volunteering with local organizations like: the Manzanita Friends of the Library, the Hoffman Center’s Wonder Garden, Tillamook Master Gardeners, Tillamook Pioneer Museum, and regional entities like the Emergency Volunteer Corp of Nehalem Bay (EVCNB). Check two boxes for “who has already been working well with others locally to achieve good outcomes?” and “who has a shown a genuine concern for his neighbors and community for many years?”

I will bring a fresh viewpoint to Council, but one informed by actual knowledge of recent, and not-so-recent legislative discussions. I’m a team player, though I haven’t always agreed with decisions made by our Council. That is the nature of government. But I am looking forward to playing my part in finding the best solutions for all of us.

Most of the candidates running for a city council seat in November understand the issues–we’ve all talked about Short Term Rentals, the Comprehensive Plan, Livability and Workforce housing, and a new city facility. I’m asking you to choose a candidate who genuinely has organization and consensus-building skills, has lived here full-time long enough to understand the history and nuances behind the issues, and the desire to do what’s right to help his fellow citizens.

I’m Mark Kuestner and I tick all those boxes. So please vote me into one of the two open City Council seats. Thank you. I won’t let our team down.

Change is Important. Experience and Leadership Counts!

For the first time in the last 10 years, Manzanita will have a very new City Council, which will bring different perspectives and fresh ideas.

You will choose two Council positions from a field of three people. I am the only candidate that has held office.

No matter who is elected, we will have a majority of new members on City Council and a new Mayor. I’m enthusiastic about bringing my experience to this new team and continuing to deal with the challenges we face! The newcomers will bring creativity and different perspectives, while my experience will help us get right to work!

Manzanita has a lot on our plate:
Completion of the Comprehensive Plan
Funding of the new city office building
Decisions on the foredune project
Revenue diversification
Updating System Development Charges (SDC’s)
Short Term Rentals and the STR Committees work –
maintaining fiscal solvency while addressing real
livability issues
How to incent Workforce housing
Modernizing our City’s records
Water Rates (last evaluated 10 years ago)
Saving our trees
Many, many more

If I have the honor to serve, I will bring experience and leadership to support and inform a new direction. My leadership experience will bring continuity to the Council and will be important as we tackle the many issues Manzanita will face as we move into the future.

Tillamook County Commissioner Mary Faith Bell notes: “I have the utmost respect and appreciation for Linda’s leadership, her heart for service to the community and her ability to develop, nourish and maintain positive relationships with a wide range of people. Moreover, Linda is a dynamo, she accomplishes amazing things, and leads and inspires others to great works as well. Truly, it is accurate to say that Linda brings out the best in people, often more than they knew they were capable of. Linda’s continued leadership on the Manzanita City Council is in everyone’s best interest.”

I would really like to hear from you. You can reach me via email at Linda.Kozlowski@gmail.com, or by phone at (503) 799-5550. You may also visit my website (lindaformanzanita.com) where you can learn more about my experience over the past 20+ years.

Thank you and please vote in November.

WHEELER: Being Aware Will Make for Wise Decisions

Submitted By: ml2@comcast.net – Click to email about this post
Dear Wheeler Voters,

It may be a challenge to know whom to vote for in our current City Council race. Here are a few facts to be aware of as you select your candidates.

* Two candidates for City Council appear to be running on a single issue: no development on the North waterfront. They may not say so, they may even deny it, but they have repeated the same arguments over and over at public City Council meetings for several years (minutes of Council meetings are public record and are available on the City’s website.)

* One candidate is advocating for development ‘in proportion to our nostalgic village’. I believe an omission in this advocacy is the necessity to rely on our established zoning and ordinances when any development is proposed.

* One candidate, who says she’s ready to “get to the work at hand,” was chastised by the Mayor during a City Council meeting for making “negative comments about the character of the developer” (City Council minutes, 9/21/2021). I know that being respectful and courteous are always the best practices — always.

* Two candidates for City Council have “beautification” of our City as one of their goals. Do they have other, more realistic ideas in response to Wheeler’s financial challenges? Again, I have repeatedly stated that Wheeler is facing critical issues and that, by working together, we will find needed solutions. I certainly support beautification, especially as a way to celebrate once the hard decisions have been made.

* I have been offering Wheeler residents clear answers in response to questions about the financial stability of our City, including support of sensitive and responsible development, and not just on the North waterfront. Our City faces multiple challenges. I believe we need to work together and be open to multiple, possible solutions to increase our revenues, make needed improvements in our infrastructure and address other, pressing concerns in our community.

Wheeler voters: Ask the hard questions of ALL candidates, such as “what are your specific ideas for increasing revenue for our City?” Listen carefully.

Respectfully,
Mary Leverette
