Upcoming Class at Hoffman: Elements of Visual Design, with Ben Rosenberg
hoffmanarts.org/events/an-introduction-to-the-elements-of-visual-design
Letâs go on a creative journey exploring line, shape, value, form, negative/positive space, color, texture, and balance. We will learn why these elements are important principles in visual communication. This will be an engaging art class that will help you develop a design vocabulary and introduce you to the skills necessary to make design decisions from an informed perspective.
With this knowledge you will increase your ability to express your artistic ideas.
Count on a hands-on, participatory class where you will work on paper through drawing, painting, and collage. We will develop knowledge of compositional strategies for various project goals: unity, variety, rhythm, harmony, tension, gravity, and more. We will learn to use and control negative space. We will develop an understanding of the color wheel and common color schemes in design.
Experimentation is essential! Art is a philosophical enterprise that seeks questions as often as it provides answers. We will introduce historical notions of form and content regarding the picture plane, vision and visuality, and the role of the artist. Being able to think about and discuss your work critically is an absolute necessity; this will become easier with practice. Group discussion will build a dialog within the class and help to create skills for talking about art.
NKN SCHOOL BOARD
Many community members as well as NKN staff, students, alumni, and families have asked me to run. Their belief in my ability to serve our community is humbling and I feel compelled to rise up and answer their call. I want to serve the students and staff of Neah-Kah-Nie School District. During the pandemic I became one of the many women who had to choose between career and family. Since I am no longer serving my community in the classroom, I feel like offering up my expertise and compassion as a board member is the next best thing.
My vision for our community looks like one big mosaic. We are all different from each other, sometimes broken and a little rough around the edges. The pandemic isolated us and illuminated our differences. I think it is time to step out and join hands again. When we come together and bind ourselves to a common vision like supporting students, we create something that is grander than what any of us could accomplish on our own.
Feel free to contact me with any questions at crowandtree@yahoo.com or join my Facebook page Marisa Bayouth-Real for Neah-Kah-Nie School Board.

Mary Leverette for Tillamook County Transportation District
I have chatted with riders of The Wave and I have learned that the ease of local public transport has yet to be achieved. Riders are limited by routes, infrequent buses, long waits for connections, complicated scheduling that may demand multiple days in advance to schedule, areas not served, and costs.
I see a future for our public transportation system in which every member of our community can travel seamlessly, at a moment’s notice, and at an affordable price. I see daily commuters to work and school who won’t have long wait times and can be home in time for dinner. I see solutions for tourists that may curb traffic congestion during peak season, and much more. However, achieving these goals means getting into the details of demand, connections, frequency of current ridership and making changes based on data.
I’m ready to sit down with riders to assess their wants and needs; then talk with service providers, government programs, grant providers, and others to learn the issues and develop solutions, find the funds, and make the goal of smooth, easy travel a reality for anyone in Tillamook County.
My name is Mary Leverette. I have had an almost 30-year career in government service, both for the State of Oregon and the City of Portland. I supervised both projects and staff. I have a Master’s Degree in Psychology and I am a dedicated volunteer. For the second year, I am organizing the Wheeler Clean-up Day; I write a column on birds for the Lower Nehalem Community Trust; and, most importantly, I was a Hospice Volunteer for 14-plus years. I am organized, positive and practical. I am retired and have the time, energy and experience to serve. I am seeking a position on the County Transportation District because I am committed to serving my community.

Nehalem City Council Unanimously Supports Health District Bond Measure
The Nehalem action came during the councilâs regular meeting on April 10. Wheelerâs city council endorsed the bond measure on March 21 and the Manzanita council made its endorsement on April 5.
Nehalem Mayor Phil Chick said the effort to improve health and senior care in the community is âabout the future and providing essential health care to the community.â
The Health District is seeking approval of a $10.25 million bond to address three community needs:
⢠Construction of an expanded, state-of-the-art Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy with adequate space to provide specialty care such as dental services and cardiology that are not current available in the community. The new facility would be constructed in downtown Wheeler on Highway 101 at Hospital Road.
⢠Renovation and modernization of the Nehalem Valley Care Center in Wheeler, the regionâs only skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. The Health District believes the Care Center, particularly given the closure of assisted living facilities in Tillamook County last year, will become even more important to the community in the future. A major renovation will help create a safer more inviting environment for patients and staff.
⢠And site preparation for workforce housing particularly geared to health care and other essential workers. Between the Care Center and Health Center nearly 80 people are employed in health care jobs in north Tillamook County.
âIt is extremely gratifying to receive the endorsement and support of all the communities in the Health District,â said Health District board president Marc C. Johnson. âI believe the city councilors and mayors of Wheeler, Manzanita and Nehalem understand, as the Health District surely does, that maintaining and improving health and senior care is an essential part of continuing to have vital, thriving communities.â
More information on the bond measure is available at: www.nehalemhealthcare.com

Why ME for NCRD
share.icloud.com/photos/0f1d-TBItrgOM5oC64_vVm_ag
Hello Community,
Now, having  watched my video, here’s a bit more about me. We moved to Nehalem in 2007. My past employment history is varied and includes being one of two Workers Comp Administrators for the largest Employer in Oregon. We were proud to be recognized for our efforts by receiving an award for creating and facilitating the best Return to Work program in the State, two years running. From that experience, I developed an eye for both safety and workability. I have been a Health & Life Insurance Agent for 23 years; we are also BnB hosts and have earned the distinction âSuper Hostâ, every quarter since that program started. Certainly honing my skills of listening for whatâs needed and wanted and delivering has aided to my successes.
You may know me as the current President of the Nehalem Bay Garden Club; past board member/President of Friends of NCRD; current board
member/Treasurer of the White Clover Grange; Outreach /Transportation chair of Rainy Day Villages or maybe we met at the Gun safety rally and/or the Women’s March in Tillamook? Or, at the rally I co-ordinated for Women’s Right’s in Nehalem? I reliably engage in our community and am proud of being actively being a âgoodâ kind of activist!
Since 2008 I have consistently demonstrated my committed that the NCRD be the best it can. I have asked the uncomfortable questions; consistently requested clarity when transparency wasnât readily available; made suggestions; and reliably kept the community apprised of key board meetings.
We believe we have an obligation, as elected board members, to actively seek out and close any Gaps discovered which may keep the NCRD from being the best it can be. I am confident if elected and as one of two new faces and Mary Gallagher being re-elected to the board, we will have NCRD achieve excellence and be for all. I am very proud that around me, people and organizations excel!
Please send any questions to me at constanceforncrd@gmail.com. My name is Constance! and I am asking you to vote for me. Thank you.

Manzanita Council Unanimously Endorses Health District Bond Measure
The Manzanita City Council approved a resolution of support at its April 5 meeting. The Wheeler City Council approved a similar statement of support at its March meeting, and the Nehalem City Council is expected to consider formal support for the bond measure later this month.
The Manzanita resolution was introduced by Councilor Brad Mayerle, a retired dentist, who noted that the bond measure will lead to improvements in local health care. âI think itâs important that we recognize this bond measure. The city of Wheeler has already done so,â Mayerle said. âThis measure checks a lot of boxes with respect to providing health care services and affordable housing for health care employees.â
The Manzanita resolution states, in part, âthe City Council of the City of Manzanita do hereby endorse the Health District bond measure in the May 16, 2023 election and encourage residents to also support the measure and these critical local projects.â
The Health Districtâs plans for the new, state-of-the-art Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy that would be constructed in downtown Wheeler include provisions for dental care and other specialty services not now available in the community.
In addition, the bond measure will fund renovation and modernization of the regionâs only skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility â the Nehalem Valley Care Center. The Care Center, also located in Wheeler, offers 24-hour nursing care to patients, as well as rehabilitation services.
In remarks to the Manzanita Council, Health District board president Marc C. Johnson said the Care Center will become even more important to the region in the future given the steady increase in the north coastâs elderly population. Johnson noted that two senior care facilities closed in Tillamook County in 2022 and that making upgrades to improve quality and safety for seniors, as well as improvements in the working conditions for care staff, would help ensure the facility serves the community into the future.
A third element of the bond measure would fund site preparation of Health District owned property as a necessary step to development of workforce housing for health care and essential workers.
The Yes For Local Health Care campaign has scheduled several town hall meetings before the election, including a âvirtual town hallâ on April 19 in order to provide information about the bond measure and what it would support.
Visit www.nehalemhealthcare.com for information about events and the growing number of residents who support the plan.
Remember to follow our Facebook page so you’re up to date on the bond measure and upcoming events.

NCRD Moves Ahead with New Swimming Pool Construction
April 4, 2023
NCRD Moves Ahead with New Swimming Pool Construction
On Tuesday, March 28, North County Recreation District awarded the contract for construction of a new swimming pool, to be located adjacent to its existing facility in Nehalem. The Notice to Proceed was issued to Par-Tech Construction Inc. the following day. This award follows an open bidding process in which three bids were received. Par-Techâs bid at $10.9 million was the lowest received for the base scope.
Par-Tech is a family-owned construction company based in Oregon City, with extensive experience in commercial building under government contracting regulations. Their subcontractors will include a mix of Oregon-coast based companies. Preliminary work on-site is planned for mid-April, subject to receipt of the County building permit. The contract calls for completion of Phase 1 by August 10, 2024.
This award is a major milestone in a long-planned development. NCRDâs existing swimming pool was built in 1930. It is not energy efficient and has been outgrown in capacity. Our experienced pool architect, Carl Sherwood of Robertson Sherwood Architects PC was engaged in 2012 to study alternatives, including the potential to upgrade the existing pool. However, changes in pool regulations and the need to expand capacity ruled this out. Fundraising continued from that time, and in 2020 a bond measure to fund the new pool was approved by voters. However, fundraising efforts were always battling the 5-7% annual construction cost inflation that significantly worsened in recent years with the impacts of COVID.
As a result, the project will be undertaken on a phased basis, as there remains much left to accomplish. Phase 1 will include the building and exterior site-works, including additional parking. Phases 2 and 3 will include the interior finishes for a 6-lane main pool and a large therapy pool. We will need to raise an additional $1.6 million before these phases can be completed. To assist in fundraising, NCRD has engaged a local consultant, Fiorelli Consulting. NCRD Board Chairman Jack Bloom stated, âI want to be clear. North County taxpayers have provided more than enough support for this new facility through the 2020 Bond Measure. The new pool will be a significant attraction for new residents and tourists in Tillamook County. It is time for other donors to step up and join the good citizens of North County to help us in recognition of the benefits the new Aquatic Center will bring to the entire County!â
When completed, the new facility will have a six-lane main pool and separate therapy pool, housed in a 15,000 sq. ft. building including showers and changing rooms. New parking spaces will be shared with NCRDâs Performing Arts Center and the existing Recreation Center.
Barbara McCann, NCRD Executive Director, said, âOur small rural community has achieved a monumental goal! For the last 90 years our local children have learned how to swim in a pool that previous generations had the foresight to build in 1930 during the Great Depression. Since then, every child in our community learns how to swim as part of their basic education. Now we can carry on that vital service for future generations.â

NEHALEM POST OFFICE HAS A NEW LOOK and PURPOSE
Native plants are beautiful and needed by pollinators to thrive. Nehalem Bay Garden Club (NBGC) is dedicated to supporting garden learning and enhancing the connection between plants and our ecosystem.
NBGC âadoptedâ beautification and re-landscaping the front of the Post Office in Nehalem as a service club project. Over the past several months, NBGC has been working tirelessly starting with removal of old overgrown shrubs and some very âhealthyâ blackberries and weeds. Thanks to a generous donation by Jiffy Construction, the heavy lifting was done by mechanical removal and garden club members did the finer work with shovels and sweat equity. Once the beds were cleaned up, the real gardening fun was ready to begin.
March 25th, under a cloak of snow clouds and a cold frosty morning, several intrepid gardeners bundled up and began the rebuilding process. The design focused on Native Plants that attract pollinators. Snowberries, Huckleberries, Oregon Grape, Coast Daisies, Lupine, Sea Thrift, Manzanita, Yarrow and Sword Ferns were added to the existing plantings of Rhododendrons, Azalea, and Roses. Many of the plants were purchased from Hope Stantonâs Aldervale Native Plants a local nursery specializing in native plants: aldervale.net/
Project Manager and Club Secretary, Kelley Roy was thrilled with the outcome “The Club members really pulled together to get this project done. It will be fun to watch as the plants grow and flower through the seasons and attract the precious pollinators of our area.”
Nehalem Bay Garden Club funds projects and non-profit related groups from the profits made at the annual Plant Sale. Each year, the club holds a sale on Mothers Day weekend. Mark your calendar for this year’s sale Saturday and Sunday, May 13th and 14th.
Nehalem Bay Garden Club has been in operation as a public service group for 76 years The club meets the 4th Tuesday of the month. All community members are welcome to join. Contact Constance Shimek Club President for more information at 503-368-4678, constance@nehalemtel.net
