Music can bring people together in unexpected ways. That’s certainly the case for Kathryn Claire and Margot Merah. Growing up on opposite sides of the world, you can expect them to never have met.

And yet they did, in the fall of 2013, in a small Irish pub in Amsterdam. The musical connection was instant. Their love of songwriting, traditional music, folk and harmony singing not only brought them together: it took them all over the world.

After 2 and a half years apart, the two reunited last summer in the Pacific Northwest for a tour featuring original and traditional songs and instrumentals along with their favorite covers.

They began writing together on the road and when they toured again in Europe this past spring, they decided the time had come to create an album of music together.

In their live shows and on their upcoming album, Come Close, Come In, these two multi-instrumentalists feature guitar, fiddle, ukulele, bodhran, harmonica and breathtaking vocal harmonies.

Kathryn Claire is based in Portland, OR. She plays violin, guitar and ukulele, has a crystal clear voice and writes songs that are honest, poetic and profound. She weaves together stories and melodies rooted in her classical and traditional musical background. Each song is imbued with an energy and electricity that you can feel, and she has the ability to move seamlessly between genres.

Margot Merah is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She is a real ‘storyteller’, exactly what the folk tradition is all about. Margot’s music is comforting, hopeful and melancholic. Her songs tell about life, simple and small, with an eye for detail and the bigger picture. She regularly performs as a solo artist, but prefers to collaborate with other musicians in various projects. Her musicality and sense of harmony and rhythm are perfect for this.

Make art you can eat on retreat!

Calling all bread and art lovers!

Our next crafty retreat is on Tuesday, August 1st from 10am-3pm and it’s a celebration of the abundance of summer in the form of food:)

Founder of the famous Astoria bakery, the Blue Scorcher, Iris Sullivan Daire, will be coming to teach us how to make beautiful foccacia bread art using our farm herbs, veggies and flowers!

Get your tickets here
www.northfork53.com/events/lammas-abundance-retreat-day

Why are we baking bread??

Because August 1st is Lammas -the midpoint between summer solstice and fall equinox.

Plants are settings seeds for next year- and in the olden days that meant the first grains were ready to make flour and bread with.

After a long no carbs season you can imagine the party our ancestors threw when beer and bread came back on the menu:)

To celebrate abundance 2023 we’re having a retreat to play with bread, enjoy some sauna time and circle up to call in abundance.

Bread Art Making with veggies and herbs
Wood fired sauna w/ cold plunge & kelp mask
Abundance Ritual with magic pouch to take home!

This retreat is on a Tuesday so if you normally work weekends- this is for you. I hope you can join us for fun on the farm.

I only have 6 spots left!

Free SUP, it has spent a few winters outside and it doesn’t float as well as it used to.

Longboard is a “soft top” style we used for teaching. It’s in fine condition but will need to have the middle fin box professionally repaired.

Both boards will need fins.

Free to whoever grabs them first.

Let’s try this in a small town.

Submitted By: codger817@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Let’s try this in a small town/county, meeting once a week for a civil discussion. There will be a zoom meeting every Friday at 9AM for “reds”, “blues”, and “in-betweens”. So far, we’re limited to us 5 “blues” and we really would like some “reds” and “in-betweens”. “Blues” sometime stereotype “others” as stupid and evil. Not the right thing to do, but hard to stop unless “others” step up and represent themselves. Simple ground rules, 1. Everybody brings their best manners. 2. Nobody talks for more than 4 minutes at a stretch. 3. Nobody comes to win an argument or change somebody’s mind. 4. Listening is as important as speaking. I’d like to say this was all my idea, but I was inspired by option 5 of the Braver Angels “Rise for America” program. braverangels.org/rise/ Here’s the link for zoom meeting. If anybody is interested in different time/day contact Jim Heffernan at codger817@gmail.com

Opening Reception! Belluschi, White, Conley

Submitted By: info@cannonbeacharts.org – Click to email about this post
The Cannon Beach Gallery is proud to announce “Belluschi, White, Conley.” This exhibition features paintings by Chris Belluschi, Frankie White, and Martin Conley, on view July 28 – September 3, 2023. Artist Frankie White’s contemporary impressionistic style captures the spirit of the natural world. This current collection of 15 paintings is inspired by the varied landscapes of the north Oregon coast. These scenes and subjects are diverse, ever changing and always inspiring. This collection of sculpture by Chris Belluschi, is inspired by archaeological artifacts, in particular those of cultures in and around Mediterranean. These contemporary works evoke the profound beauty that can exist in objects far removed from their days of peak splendor. Martin Conley has been working with wood for over 40 years, both as a sculptor and a carpenter. Martin likes to fined misshaped and unusual pieces of wood, letting the wood guide the process to a finished product..
Join us Friday July 28, 2023 from 4:30 – 6:30 for our artist reception, meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and view the new collection.
The Cannon Beach Gallery is open 7 – days a week from 10 – 4PM and located in Mid-Town Cannon Beach 1064 S Hemlock St. Cannon Beach, OR 97110. A 501(3)(c) nonprofit organization, CBAA was founded with the intent to bring a wide variety of programs to members of our community and to visitors to the Pacific Northwest coast.
