Cannon Beach Library Hosts ‘Blankets’ Graphic Novelist Craig Thompson

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Cartoonist and graphic novel author Craig Thompson will discuss his award-winning work during a NW Authors Series presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. The hybrid program will be offered in person at the Cannon Beach Library and online, available on the library’s website, at cannonbeachlibrary.org. Thompson illustrated and wrote the multiple award-winning autobiography, Blankets, which was named Time Magazine’s No. 1 graphic novel in 2003. Published in 20 languages, the memoir tells the story of a young man finding a first love and emerging from a rigorous fundamentalist Christian childhood with the confidence to express his own voice. The Guardian newspaper said of Blankets: “Quaint, meditative and sometimes dreamy, Blankets will take you straight back to your first kiss.”  Thompson’s later books, Carnet de Voyage, Habibi and Space Dumplins, also were award winners. The artwork he created for the Menomena album Friend and Foe received a Grammy nomination for best recording package. Thompson was born in Michigan in 1975, and grew up in a rural farming community in central Wisconsin. As a child, he enjoyed the Sunday newspaper comics and comic books. He drew a comic strip for the college newspaper while attending the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County. In 1997, Thompson moved to Portland, where he worked for Dark Horse Comics until he turned his attention to his own work. His first graphic novel was the semi-autobiographic Good-bye, Chunky Rice, which also won several awards. The NW Authors Series hosts Pacific Northwest authors from September through May. The committee also sponsors the Writers Read Celebration, featuring writers who read original stories, essays, poems, etc. on a specific theme. The next Writers Read Celebration will be on March 22.

VOTE NO

Submitted By: Constance@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
So, who am I who would dare to suggest, let alone promote a NO VOTE for the renewal of the 5year operational tax levy?

I am a past board member & President of Friends of NCRD; current President of the Nehalem Bay Garden Club; current Treasurer of White Clover Grange; outreach Director of Rainy Day Village, a Precinct Committee Person and a Neighborhood Leader. I am an active, engaged, supporter of our Villages and communities since moving here in 2007. I have been a voice for those unable to speak and for those who feel they have no voice.

I’ve also been a siren when curious numbers show up on documentation/budget sheets of NCRD. (1.7 million donated by community members since 2013? NO. The past (not) employed?-Finance Director’s income looking to have received over $100,000/yr? Why those questions/concerns have been met with such defensive anger is surprising to me, given the 2009 embezzlement case where ‘an audit report of NCRD brought to light the absence of approximately $9,300 from the budget. The missing monies were reimbursements made to Fletcher without appropriate documentation’. I would think the NCRD board and staff would appreciate all eyes on deck? NO.

Which brings me to last nights Board meeting. I will say I am impressed with Michael Howes, new board member. He asked direct questions, some obviously uncomfortable to staff and didn’t step over asking what was not clear. Thank you Michael, there is hope. Since attending almost every board meeting the last 3 years, I am encouraged for the first time!

And, I am confused. The Board minutes say TJ Fiorelli was hired as Asst. Executive Director, however TJ made it clear last night he has never been hired? Okay, then who rec’d the $11,338.00
expense for the Asst ED, shown in the budget for last month? And, wasn’t he given a contract for $7,000 dollars to raise 2+ million dollars for the no-pool pool? Where’s that money? Hmmmmm.

I believe the Board missed an opportunity last night to share what was created (if anything) in their ‘workshop’ last month. Given they absolutely know why I am promoting a NO VOTE, they could have addressed issues to show they give a damn about repairing or creating faith in the Communities, but no. The meeting barely lasted 30 minutes? Too bad…not even a conversation for committees being formed for stage accessibility; Pickle-ball accessibility; youth’s Skate-park; Citizen advocacy; nothing, as of yet….

VOTE NO, be a demand for ALL!

Royal Albert American Beauty Rose China

Submitted By: janbehrs@hotmail.com – Click to email about this post
Perhaps one of Royal Albert’s most beautiful patterns, this set of American Beauty was purchased by my Canadian grandmother in the 1940s from the famous British maker of bone china, Royal Albert. It is in excellent condition, having been used only for special-occasion dinners — Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, etc. Gradually, through the 1940s and 1950s, many special pieces were added to the basic set.

I considered selling it to Replacements Ltd., until they offered me prices such as $1 for the mini-creamer (which they were selling for $21) and $8 for a cup-and-saucer set, which they sell for $22. Plus, I’d have to pay to ship it all to them (yikes), which would pretty much wipe out what I’d receive for the dishes. Wow! Talk about highway robbery! So I decided to offer this nostalgic china for sale closer to home.

There are 8 dinner plates (which Replacements sells for $40 each!), 7 bread-and-butter plates, 6 fruit/dessert bowls; a mini-creamer, mini-sugar bowl and their tray; a sandwich tray ($70 on Replacements!); a 13-inch oval serving platter; 4 dessert-plus-cup combo plates; a 7-inch relish/sweet meat (candy) dish; a 4-3/4-inch square sweet meat dish; 11 Countess-style cups and 11 saucers (the cups also fit the dessert plates). I also have the teapot with lid, no flower on spout, which Replacements is selling for $225. The topknot on the lid has been glued back in place, so this is not a perfect piece like the others.

All of the above for $350.
