DEEPER DIVE – DUNGENESS CRABS
Registration for this event is now open!
Netarts Bay and the surrounding ocean waters are home to many Dungeness Crabs. You have likely encountered them scurrying around in the bay, in a crab pot, or perhaps just remnant shells on the beach.
If you are curious about Dungeness crabs then we have you covered! By the end of this event, you will know how to tell Dungeness crabs apart from other local species of crabs, what they eat, how long they live, and how they reproduce! We will marvel at their unique adaptations as we explore internal and external anatomy.
Friends Netarts Bay WEBS volunteer and biologist Jim Young will lead this presentation. Come join us and get your questions answered!

Amicus Brief – Remembering Lanisha
What they call you is one thing.
What you answer to is something else.
Â
Lucille Clifton, 1936 – 2010
That night it was her birthday.
We were at the Lighthouse,
a local bar and gathering place.
You were sitting by yourself at
the bar. Not for you and you alone
did I refuse to kiss your angry,
drunken axe, dismiss or ignore
all the times you were wronged,
not heard, demeaned, all the times
you were frightened and confused.
When I came to order at the bar,
what you apparently saw and were
imagining, was not what was actually
there. For your own reasons you were
wanting to hurt, get down, fight.
Full of partying intentions, I was wearing
my favorite old coat, unraveling a bit,
threadbare, and apparently from Bolivia.
When you asked if I was homeless
it was clear you believed I had no
right or reason to be at the bar,
the gathering, or occupy space at all.
It was all very sad and a response was
needed that was not available.
When I answered the fist of your
surprising question, “What are you
homeless,” I could not sanction nor
join yet another confused distraction,
nor support the ignorance that brought
this violence to you that you were now
bringing to me. My factual answer,
“Not at this time.” did not in any way
quiet what was burning in you and the dance
of our random meeting continued in ways
I have now forgotten. Finally someone,
claiming to know each of us, said something
that allowed you to let go, begin to settle back,
release. I was grateful that at on this night,
loathing quieted, no more blood would be lost.

SPRING GALA FUNDRAISER MAY 3RD
Join us for a spectacular spring fundraising gala at the North County Recreation District (NCRD) as we endeavor to bridge the final stretch of a $2.6 million funding gap for the construction of the new Aquatics Center.
This event promises an evening filled with delectable dinner, refreshing drinks, live music, and a sense of community contributing to a shared goal, culminating in an exciting auction to raise funds for the new Aquatics Center.

Our Cause
Swimming is a life skill that opens doors to physical fitness, water safety, and recreational enjoyment. The new Aquatics Center will provide a valuable resource for learn-to-swim lessons, first responder training, water sports, warm water therapy, and community gatherings, fostering a healthier and more connected community.
How Funds Will Be Used
Funds raised will be used to complete construction of the new 6-lane pool, a modern therapy pool featuring safe zero-entry floors, an eco-friendly building with glu-lam mass timber beams as well as water and energy-saving systems, an ecologically beneficial site featuring native plants for the Oregon Coast, new public spaces, and an expanded team of skilled aquatics professionals.
