Karl Marlantes to Discuss His Novels at Coaster Theatre Saturday

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
North Coast native and popular author Karl Marlantes will discuss his novels, “Deep River” and “Matterhorn” during a presentation sponsored by the Cannon Beach Library.
The in-person presentation will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the Coaster Theatre Playhouse, 108 N. Hemlock St. Admission is free. Proof of Covid vaccination is required. Masks are optional.
Born in Astoria, Marlantes grew up in Seaside and attended Seaside High School, where he was student body president. Marlantes also attended Yale University. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University and earned a master’s degree.
His first book, “Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War,” written in 2010, was called by the New York Times “one of the most profound and devastating novels ever to come out of Vietnam– or any war.”
It is based on Marlantes’ combat experience as an infantry officer with the 1st Battalion of the U.S. Marines from 1968 to 1969. He was awarded the Navy Cross for leading an assault on a hilltop bunker complex, which is at the core of “Matterhorn.”
Marlantes also received a Bronze Star, two Navy commendation medals for valor, two Purple Hearts and 10 Air Medals.
His second book, a memoir published in 2011, was “What It Is Like to Go to War.” It is about his return as a civilian and life as a Vietnam War veteran.
In 2019, Marlantes turned in a different direction with his novel, “Deep River,” about the logging industry, canneries and labor organizations on the Columbia River in Oregon and Washington in the early 20th century.
The book follows a Finnish family that leaves Finland and makes its way to Astoria and Southwest Washington, much like Marlantes’ grandparents did when they left their homelands.
Marlantes’ presentation is sponsored by the NW Authors Series, which welcomes authors monthly from September to May and offers the Writers Read Celebration for local writers.

County Commissioner

Submitted By: carriefuller@hotmail.com – Click to email about this post
To the Editor:
We are supporting Mary Faith Bell for Tillamook County Commissioner because she is the best person for the job. Her opponent, Graydon Hallock, has an extensive record of both criminal and civil matters. What stands out the most are the Family Abuse Prevention Act charges. Go check out his record on the Tillamook County Circuit Court public computer in the courthouse. His record, and the pattern of abusive behavior in it, speak for themselves.
When asked about his criminal history at the Pacific City candidates forum, Graydon answered as if he’s only been in trouble once. He seemed to be referring to the time in 2015 that he hit the mother of his child with a vehicle, while the child was in the vehicle, for which he was convicted of two counts of recklessly endangering another person, one count each for the victim and the child. Describing this incident in the Pacific City forum, Graydon blamed the victim, said he was falsely accused, said the court was wrong and he’s going to get his record expunged.
His court record does not support his story. For example, in a declaration filed with the court in April 2017, Graydon Hallock admitted that he was sentenced to 24 months of probation on two counts of recklessly endangering another person, and that prior to that, he had been subject to the conditions of a security release agreement. He admitted that he served 45 days in the Tillamook County Jail and was given credit for time served. He also admitted that he was ordered to complete a batterer’s intervention program and a 12-week nurturing parent class. A month after that judgment, an arraignment order was issued against him for contempt and failure to follow the action plan set by the court.
This is one example from his lengthy record. He didn’t show up for the AAUW candidates forum at all, maybe because he didn’t want to answer any more questions about his crimes. Bottom line: we don’t want a commissioner who threatens, hurts and endangers women and children and thinks he’s above the law.
We stand with women and children. We stand with victims. We stand with leaders who will work to protect victims. We stand with Mary Faith Bell.

2 long garden hoses

FREE: Two garden hoses. Both probably 100 feet long. One has a spray nozzle that works. The other is untested and probably requires a hose gasket. They came with the house and we have used one and it’s fine.

Prefer to have them both go out at the same time but willing to divvy them up if need be.

Please text 503-572-8907 or email. In Nehalem.

Wood Fire Ceramics Workshop
For Experienced Potters

The Hoffman Clay Studio is excited to partner with Joe Robinson of East Creek Art to bring you a unique ceramics workshop on the art of wood firing.

The May 10th workshop will be taught in Manzanita by Joe who is the co-owner of East Creek Art. Joe has been making pots for over 20 years and is on the Art faculty at Linfield University. He holds an MFA from Oregon College of Art and Craft.

Joe will share the techniques of creating works for the wood fire kiln and the process of wood firing in the anagama kiln. He will demonstrate the wheel techniques and our own Barry Calvarese will demo the hand-building steps.

After the demos, participants will build a vessel of their own. Once dry the works from the class will be bisque fired at the Hoffman Clay Studio and transported to the anagama kiln at East Creek for firing. Interested potters may even arrange a visit to the kiln site in Willamina to see the loading or firing process first hand.

The workshop will be four hours in length, from 2 – 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10th.

The price for the class is $95 which includes both firings and the use of the tools in the studio. There is a $10 materials fee to cover the cost of the clay and firing.

FREE Standing cabinet

Submitted By: Jim@patriciagreencellars.com – Click to email about this post
FREE: Standing cabinet of some sort. Actually pretty nice. 66” x 30”. Probably weighs around 70 pounds. One thing to note is that the fold down portion seems stuck. Could be the wood has swelled over the years. Since we were passing this on we decided not to try and force it and possibly damage it.

I don’t think this is some Antiques Roadshow score so I would hope that whomever asks after it both needs and wants this for their place.

Maybe would be good to hear from folks why they’re interested so it ends up in the hands of someone that will give it a nice new life as a functional piece of furniture.

I’m Nehalem. Email or text 503-572-8907.

Li’l Abner Musical Presented by Nestucca High School

Submitted By: mw_coffee@yahoo.com – Click to email about this post
During mid-May Nestucca High School students will present the musical Li’l Abner for a week of performances in the gym of Nestucca High School.
On Wednesday, May 18th community members are invited to attend the performance beginning at 11am. Admission to this performance is $5 for general seating. Senior citizens will be honored special reserve seating at the general admission price in the front three rows for this performance only on a first come, first serve basis. Light refreshments will be served to patrons at this performance.
Additional shows will be held on Saturday, May 21 at 7pm and Sunday, May 22 at 2pm. A limited number of front row reserve seating tickets are available for $10 each and can be reserved in advance by calling 503-392-3194 ext 230. General admission is $8 for ages 11 to adult and $5 for senior citizens and youth ages 10 and under.
Many will remember the comic strip Li’l Abner by Al Capp. The musical is based on the story within the comic strip, and is a comedy set in the hillbilly town of Dogpatch, USA. The Sadie Hawkins Day Race is set to happen, whereupon a girl who catches her man gets to marry him. Daisy Mae hopes to catch Abner, but the Yokumberry Tonic Mammy makes him drink every day which makes him strong also apparently makes him rather “neutral” when it comes to matters of the heart.
Nestucca High School is well-known for its tradition of putting on spring musicals. The first musical produced in the Nestucca community was 60 years ago with Mack Pimentel directing. One of Mack’s own students, Kathleen (Schenck) Serven, took over as director in 1997 when he retired. She and other drama directors helping her have kept the musical tradition alive every spring, all except the last two years, due to the pandemic. Assisting Kathleen this year is Heidi Trambley as Assistant Director and piano accompanist, Kelli McMellon as drama director, and Christal Winesburgh as Serven’s Co-Director in the orchestra pit.
Nestucca musicals feature a community orchestra, put together with musicians from Waldport to Rockaway Beach and out to Hillsboro. The orchestra meets every Sunday for two months to prepare for the show.
This year’s musical stars Junior Lionel Brown as Abner, Senior Tessa Thompson as Daisy Mae, Junior Henry Cook as Marryin’ Sam, Sophomore AJ Johns as Mammy Yokum, Alinna Mendoza as Pappy Yokum, and Senior Dennis Jaynes as Earthquake. Junior Liz Chez and Senior Yaky Gracia co-manage the stage.
Come and enjoy the show with us, have some laughs, and support our local musical theater students in their first musical in two years. Don’t miss it!
