CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU…from Deb Simmons
None of us hit the campaign trail alone. We were all backed by teams of friends, believers and spouses who did much of the hard work and gave us significant guidance along the way. And, to our supporters, those who were out front as well as behind the scenes, there is no way to thank each of you individually for your contributions. However, kudos goes out to the Concerned Citizens of Manzanita and to the Women’s Forum who knocked on a lot of doors, and also to those who hosted gatherings and encouraged citizens to make every vote count.
Speaking personally, my thanks will be in working towards implementing some of those changes that many of you hope to see happen. Respecting all people – whether or not you share a view – will be the norm. Opening doors to discussions so all sides can be heard – will be the norm. Councilors and city officials listening to what you have to say – will be the norm. Finally, putting major spending and other significant packages to a vote by citizens – will be one of my personal goals as mayor.
Thanks, also, to the hundreds of citizens who voted. I am overwhelmed by your support, engaged by the lively banter of opposiing views and encouraged about the vision of our city coming together.
Respectfully,
Deb Simmons Mayor-elect of Manzanita

‘Cozy Mystery’ Author Ellie Alexander to Speak at Cannon Beach Library
Alexander will discuss her books – and maybe offer a recipe – when she visits the Cannon Beach Library at 2 p.m. Nov. 12. This is a hybrid event; the presentation can be viewed in person at the library or online: www.cannonbeachlibrary.org.
The event is also a part of WOW! Weekend, a three-day festival in Cannon Beach featuring local vendors, artists, speakers and performers. All library events are free and open to the public.
In addition to the Bakeshop series, Alexander’s cozy mysteries include the Sloan Krause mysteries, the Pacific Northwest and Rose City mystery series and several stand-alone novellas and collaborations.
Alexander notes that the Pacific Northwest is a backdrop for every book, and the location “almost becomes another character in each series.”
Her books feature charming small towns, idyllic settings, delicious foods and drinks and lovable characters (and sometimes, even murder).
A voracious storyteller, Alexander says her goal is to “tell stories that provide points of connection, escape and understanding.”
Alexander has published over 30 books in hardcover, mass-market paperback, e-book, audio, and Japanese. Her writing has appeared in regional and international publications including Climbing Magazine, Women’s World, Buzz Feed, The Oregonian and Portland Family Magazine. She also teaches classes and workshops on writing and marketing.
The event is offered by the NW Authors Series, a committee of the Cannon Beach Library that sponsors monthly author talks and other events from September through May.

Just a few bulbs left! FRIENDS OF NCRD
And Wow! What a wonderful reception Friends of North County Recreation has gotten for the spring flowering bulbs. We’re getting down to the bare bones or should I say bare bags of our supply. Friends started out in October with about 310 bags of bulbs for sale. Of the forty-nine bags (units) of bulbs we started out with at the beginning of this week we are down to sixteen bags. And we’ve got our community to thank for all these sales! Remember, there’s still time to plant.
Friends’ selection of what are called Uncommon Daffodils include Pipe Major. Easy on the eye, the Pipe Major has yellow petals with an orange center -blooming a little later than most daffodils. (Pipe Major as 10 units left).
Tulips left for sale include Rosy Diamond, a purple color with lots of red, goes well with pastel pink and soft yellow spring bloomers. Rosy Diamond is a double tulip, very fluffy. Price: 10/$15 (only one unit left). Our other tulip is a Scarlet Baby, growing only six inches tall. It will jolt you with its red color. Price: $10/$10 (only one unit left).
Thanks to so many of you who purchased Paper Whites in the past couple of days, we have only 4 units of those. Price is 5/$10.
We have just a few Amaryllis left for sale. One-Double Dream Amaryllis which has reddish pink blooms with white highlights making an unusual and beautiful display. We start your Amaryllis for you using the proper medium and get them growing before we hand them off. They come with growing instructions. Warm up your world with the Horizon Amaryllis. You will think you have awakened in a tropical destination. We have three Horizon Amaryllis. These are very large amaryllis bulbs which sell for $40 planted.
All the above make great gifts. You will be so happy in the spring if you get our tulips and daffodils planted now. I am already envisioning my daffodils blooming in a pot by my front door. Thank you to all who have participated in our bulb sale this fall and we hope to see a few more of you as customers in the next few days.
Call Patty to place your order 503-368-6081. We will do our best to have your order taken to the Welcome Center at NCRD in Nehalem the next day, Monday-Friday. And if you like, take a tour of the facility while you are there.
