SUMMARY
Part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, and her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”

Hemingway at the Beach: Writers Read Celebration Asks What He Would Say

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Suppose novelist Ernest Hemingway arrived at the Oregon coast and wanted to write about his experience in a maximum of 600 words. What would he write?
This year’s Writers Read Celebration, sponsored by the Cannon Beach Library, asks that question with the theme, “Hemingway at the beach: What Would He Say?”
Writers of all ages from all areas are invited to consider how or what Hemingway would say while at the beach. All written formats will be considered (essay, story, poetry, haiku, script, etc.) Authors are limited to three
entries with a 600-word maximum per entry. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 20.
A panel of volunteer judges will select 10 to 12 works to be read by their authors either in person or online during the celebration March 10 in the library.
Hemingway wrote about his experiences using as few words as possible, and his novels and short stories have become classics. The Writers Read Celebration offers an opportunity to have fun with this writing style in any form; the piece can be serious, whimsical, tongue-in-cheek or thoughtful.
Submissions will be accepted by email (info@cannonbeachlibrary.org) or by mail (P.O. Box 486
Cannon Beach, OR 97110), though email is preferred.
Submissions should be in Word or PDF format and include a cover letter with the writer’s name, email
and phone number. Please do not include the author’s name or contact information on the entry
document so authors remain anonymous during the judging process.
The NW Authors Series Committee sponsors monthly author presentations and other events at the
Cannon Beach Library. This is the fifth year of the Writers Read Celebration. Previous themes were:
“Life on the North Coast,” “The View from the North Coast,” “Pandemic” and “Recovery?.” Writers Read Celebrations on Zoom from 2022 and 2021 are available for viewing on Cannon Beach Library’s website.

YOUR Hope Chest needs YOUR help finding a new home!

Submitted By: Kirby.voos@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
As many of you have already heard, the Nehalem Hope Chest Thrift Shop will not be renewing its extended lease past March 31, 2023. The property is for sale and after March 31st we will be on a month-to-month lease until the property sells. We are hopeful and confident that with community support we will be able to find a new home for our shop in either Manzanita, Nehalem, or Wheeler. We are beyond grateful for all the wonderful years we’ve had at our current location, including a very accommodating, gracious and generous landlord.

The Hope Chest began in 1998 and is a 501C3. We are thankful for the continued community support, because without you we wouldn’t be able to give back to the community to the extent that we do. It all comes full circle – you donate to the shop, our volunteer team sorts and prepares items to be sold, we resell your donations, and give the proceeds back to local community organizations. This cycle keeps usable items out of the landfill and in turn provides the community with affordably priced clothing and household items to buy through the shop.

The NEHALEM store is open Wednesday – Saturday 12:00-4:00 pm and accepts donations Wednesday – Friday only. The ROCKAWAY store is open Thursday – Saturday 10:00-4:00 pm and accepts donations Friday and Saturday only.

A *friendly reminder* to bring all holiday decoration donations in PRIOR to the holiday. This goes for every holiday, but especially Christmas as these decorations are our largest of the holiday donations. With the Nehalem store relocating sometime in the future, we do not plan to move Christmas decorations with us to our new location since available storage space is unknown.

Please note that the Nehalem location is still OPEN and accepting donations and will continue to remain open until the property sells. Any updates to our new location will be posted here on the BBQ and our Facebook page.

In December 2022, we look forward to celebrating our achievement of giving *Two Million dollars* back to our local community. These monies are donated to various organizations in our local area, such as North County Food Bank, Meals For Seniors, Hospice, Faith in Action and several more. This is only possible because of our community, volunteers, and those who shop with us. THANK YOU!!

Please remember that YOUR Hope Chest needs YOUR help finding a new home! Contact DeeAnn Grimes, our store manager, at 503-858-2092 with any leads.

Happy Holidays and thank you for your continuing support and in your efforts for finding us a new home. As always, we look forward to seeing you in the shop and accepting more of your donations!

Remember to shop local this holiday season. In supporting local small businesses we support each other and our shared community.
