RIVERBEND PLAYERS: THANK YOU LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDNET

Submitted By: fsquillo@riverbendplayers.org – Click to email about this post

To our community theater family and friends,

As the curtain closed on our production of THE ODD COUPLE, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this remarkable run possible.

To our cast: thank you for your talent, dedication, and willingness to trust the process. From the first read-through to the final curtain call, you brought Neil Simon’s beloved characters to life with energy, humor, and heart. Every rehearsal, every note, every adjustment contributed to a production that entertained audiences and made us all proud. Watching this cast grow together and embrace these characters has been one of the great joys of directing this show.

To our crew, designers, stage managers, board members, volunteers, front-of-house team, and everyone working behind the scenes: thank you for the countless hours that often go unseen.

Community theater succeeds because of people who quietly and generously give their time, talent, and effort. Your work created the foundation that allowed this production to shine.

To our audiences: thank you for filling the theater, sharing your laughter, and supporting live community theater. There is nothing quite like hearing a packed house respond to a performance. Your presence reminds us why we do this. Every ticket purchased, every standing ovation, every kind word in the lobby helps ensure that community theater continues to thrive here on the North Coast.

And to our broader community, sponsors, donors, and supporters: thank you for believing in Riverbend Players. Your encouragement, generosity, and commitment to the arts allow us to create opportunities for local performers, technicians, volunteers, and audiences to come together through the shared experience of live theater.

THE ODD COUPLE is a story about friendship, acceptance, and learning to appreciate the differences that make each of us unique. In many ways, that’s what community theater is all about. We bring together people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives and, through collaboration, create something far greater than any one person could accomplish alone.

As President of Riverbend Players and Director of this production, I could not be prouder of what we achieved together. Thank you for making THE ODD COUPLE such a memorable success.

We look forward to seeing you at the theater this fall for DRACULA: The Radio Play and this December for our first-ever holiday musical, WINTER WONDERETTES.

With gratitude,

Frank Squillo
President, Riverbend Players Community Theater
Director, THE ODD COUPLE

Shipwrecks at Your Fingertips

This is a “Don’t Miss” event! We asked Jennifer Kozik to come to the museum to do a book reading and she agreed. Since then, it appears that we will have a crowd so we booked the Pine Grove (same address, just upstairs). Jennifer will be bringing some other leaders from the Maritime Archeological Society and they will be available to join the conversation. She has some slides and will read some passages from the book. She will bring some books to sell but, if you want to get a head start, the books are available at Cloud and Leaf.

Nehalem Valley Historical Society will have members present too and we will talk about some of our upcoming activities. Also represented will be members of the Sir Francis Drake Society to talk about their belief that Drake careened the Golden Hind in Nehalem Bay.

This is going to be very conversational. Doors open at 1:00 pm and we’ll let the conversation go on until 4:00. See you there.

Move with us – Thurs 6/18 – Here Comes the Sun

Move your body.
Clear your mind.
Open your heart.

Join us THURSDAY as we welcome the delicious, play-full-out time of Summer.

Theme: Here Comes the Sun
When: Thursday, June 18th at 5:30-7pm
Where: White Clover Grange, Nehalem OR
Playlist by: DJ Starseed (Neil Nyquist)
Circle host: Christina Pyktel

If you’re new to our community or not quite sure what it is we do, we thought to share a little more about what to expect.

We begin by gathering in a circle, setting an intention, and doing a simple embodiment practice to help us arrive and connect with ourselves.

From there, we’ll move into a period of free-form movement. There is no right way to participate. You might dance, stretch, rest, sit quietly, close your eyes, connect with others, or simply enjoy the music. The invitation is to listen to your body and follow what feels true for you.

After the movement portion of the evening, we gather in a circle and pause to integrate the experience. We then come back together for a closing circle and an opportunity to share reflections from the evening.

People come for all kinds of reasons: to move, connect, process, explore, or simply enjoy being present. Whatever brings you here, you’re welcome.

Free Concert This Sunday, June 21st, in Cannon Beach

Steel Magic Northwest, performs Free Concert in Cannon Beach’s Downtown City Park on Sunday, June 21st

A steel drum orchestra, Steel Magic Northwest plays the hits you know and love.

But Steel Magic Northwest is as much about making good people as it is about making good music! Student participants learn much more than just music in the steel band. They develop teamwork skills, leadership through mentoring, an increased sense of responsibility to the group, social skills, and they see on a regular basis the fruits of their dedication.

The steel band is different than school band or orchestra in that the director doesn’t stand in front with a baton; the students themselves are in front, and therefore have a heightened sense of ownership of the performance.

This free, family friendly concert begins at 5:00PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, low-backed chairs and fully stocked picnic baskets.

The park is located in downtown Cannon Beach, northeast of the Chamber of Commerce at 2nd & Spruce.

The concert is produced by the Tolovana Arts Colony and made possible by a Community Grant from the City of Cannon Beach.

For more information, visit tolovanaartscolony.org, email tolovanaartscolony@gmail.com, or call 541-215-4445.

To Richard Masternik: It’s Called Flag Day

Submitted By: Tinnindeb@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
America celebrates Flag Day on June 14. A date established to honor and celebrate our Flag, for what it stands for in this country. The date of June 14 was established in 1949 by an Act of Congress to honor our flag.

Flags are put out by communities and citizens to celebrate this country. Manzanita proudly celebrates this day by honoring the Flag. This is what Manzanita is about, honoring and celebrating this country. Our Manzanita Citizen of the Year, veteran Chuck Bridge, puts those flags out with honor and dignity every year on June 14.

Apparently Richard Masternik, you don’t know what Flag Day honors.

A Manzanita Citizen,
Deb Tinnin

Peaceful Protest in Nehalem June 20

Dear Friends,

Please join North County Resistance this coming Saturday, June 20, from noon to 2 PM for our weekly Peaceful Protest.

This past week we had about 20 people join us. The heat sent several people home, but we appreciated all who were able to protest with us. We are not seeing those temperatures this coming week. We all probably ought to be more cautious if we run into those hot temperatures again. Let’s talk about it on Saturday.

No one who attends these Peaceful Protests is going to be silenced. Believe me, this is a group of very dedicated protesters. Come and join us!

Best,
Patty Rinehart

Yesterday Jennifer and I made the 4 hour round trip to Salem to give Governor Kotek a homemade pie. June 9 was National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day!
On the way we also dropped one off with Representative Cyrus Javadi in Tillamook, which felt a bit rascally because I’d never left a pie at a dentist office before.
These weren’t just any toothsome treats. They were cosmic delights made by Jennifer Childress and Libby Golden, loving works of art full of fresh rhubarb grown by Marie Scovell plus soulful Oregon strawberries. Mojo mammas baked these beauties as kitchen offerings on behalf of communities who want Oregon’s leaders to legalize potlucks.
Jennifer had visited the state capitol once before, in high school, but I’d never set foot in those massive quarters. As we sent the pie through the metal detector I thought of all those westerns where someone bakes a file into the desert in order to spring an inmate. And indeed we were bringing something inside to help activate freedom.
Folks at the information desk instructed us to go up the second floor and use a “side-door” into the governor’s office. I immediately flashed on a historic sign at Bill’s Tavern in Cannon Beach. “Hippies Use Side Door.”
We did, and felt the glorious groovy sun break through clouded hearts when we were greeted by a living breathing human being named Valerie. It was uplifting to speak with someone after weeks and weeks of fruitless communication, trying to engage with the corporate machinery of government.
We left the pie for her to share with Governor Kotek and her staff, along with information about the need for Oregon to legalize potlucks. Stay tuned, fellow participants in this homemade revolution of kitchen community.

A Dark Night

On the shore in la barra de Santiago

lightning opens a black horizon.

Under a cloudy tropical moon

she will emerge from a warm sea

and slowly move out through scattered

coconut husks and mango seeds beyond

the reach of even the highest tides.

She will build a nest on what is the shore

of her birth. Sea turtles will navigate

immense distances and often go deep, down

to great depths, where in complete darkness,

timeless minutes pass between heart beats.

Ashore, she will dig her whole body down,

then dig a deeper chamber, a cache to protect

her valued eggs. Seldom do the arriving turtles

pass unnoticed. There are hungry ones here,

some with machetes and bright lights and

they all know how to wait. Sea turtles

are ancient beings that are now approaching

extinction. But on this dark night, she will secure

a continuing future for her kind. Her distinct tracks

will be erased, washed away by a warm rain,

destiny buried deep, safe in the nested sand

and I will wait for her.
