Friends Welcome Summer & Celebrate 2022-2023

FRIENDS WELCOME SUMMER (and celebrate 2022-2023)

Friends of NCRD welcomes summer with its Summer Cut Flower Sales. Last summer’s Sales, offered daily in the parking lot of the Little Apple, raised a little over $6,000 for Youth scholarships, summer programs and projects at NCRD.

Friends’ Mission is to support NCRD by promoting it and raising funds for scholarships, programs and projects. With scholarships as top priority, Friends are proud to have raised more than $15,000 in the past twelve months for Youth/Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Department scholarships. Of that amount, over $11,000 went to the Youth After-School & Summer Programs and Youth Sports. With its focus on Youth, Friends provided an additional $1,000 for Youth Center/ Sports equipment and the Aquatics “Learn to Swim” program. Special thanks and appreciation to our members, part-time and full-time, whose donations to Youth Center/Youth Sports have enriched and expanded opportunities to all North County families.

Friends of NCRD also promotes and supports the New Pool Project. Individual Friends have made significant donations to the new pool. Friends were among those who gathered and celebrated at the May 9th Groundbreaking Ceremony. Friends continue to promote the New Pool Project by participating in grant applications, to close the gap between funds available and funds needed to complete the Project.

In collaboration with the Fitness Department, Friends of NCRD sponsors “Pop Goes the Heart,” an annual February Fun Fundraiser. In 2022, $6,000 earned from the event, plus an additional $1,600 from Friends, purchased eight spin bikes for the new Spin Class program. Thanks to a generous donor, an additional four bikes were later purchased to accommodate a full class. The February 2023 “Pop Goes the Heart” brought in an amazing $9,000 for Fitness Department equipment, including new benches, exercise bars, mats, storage rack, preacher curl, hyperextension-oblique and water-rowing machines.

The Plastic Bench Project, another Friends of NCRD activity, encourages community recycling of previously non-recyclable plastic. Three attractive outdoor TREX benches, earned by Friends’ participation in the Project, have been gifted to NCRD for community use. Plastic additionally collected is about 100 lbs short of the 500 lbs required to qualify for a fourth bench.

Thank you to Friends’ dedicated volunteers for generously giving of their time to the North County community. Friends of NCRD Board members – President Linda Makohon, Vice President Barb Scott-Brier, Treasurer Carol Mills, Secretary Gail Young, Director Andrea Cortinas, Liaison to NCRD Kiley Konruff, and Flower Chair Patty Rinehart – along with Friends’ volunteers, have worked hard to make Friends’ mission a reality in 2022-2023. Congratulations to All!

Membership in Friends of NCRD is open to everyone connected to the community. Join Friends in its commitment to NCRD and North County families. Volunteer to help with fundraising activities supporting NCRD. Donations can be made online or mailed to: Friends of NCRD, PO Box 511, Nehalem, OR 97131
Friends of NCRD welcomes guests to its meetings, held the third Tuesday of the month.

Note: This critique is a work of fiction. The play and its characters are fictional. Any resemblance to real individuals is unintended and purely coincidental.

A Triumph of Conviction: “5 Angry Councilors” Showcases a Heroine Mayor
“5 Angry Councilors” is a riveting play that draws inspiration from the classic 1954 television play “12 Angry Men”. The play was adapted for stage and film and has been given numerous remakes and adaptations, most recently as “12 Angry Jurors”. “5 Angry Councilors” applies the play’s intense deliberation to the realm of local politics. The play revolves around the City Council in an unnamed town, where the mayor, a remarkable character, stands as the beacon of integrity and leadership in the face of overwhelming opposition.
The mayor, brilliantly portrayed as the lone voice of reason and sound city policy, finds herself pitted against four councilors who embody different shades of resistance. The first is a long-time councilor who clings to outdated ideologies and is hesitant to embrace new perspectives. Two others are newly elected councilors, lacking the experience and the courage to challenge the status quo, easily swayed by the old-timer’s influence. Finally, a newly appointed councilor adds a different dimension of uncertainty to their position on the City Council.
Despite being consistently outnumbered and outvoted, the mayor demonstrates extraordinary determination and wisdom. She defies conventional thinking by prioritizing competence over familiarity, appointing the most qualified candidates to important committees, rather than succumbing to the pressure to favor long-time community members. She bravely questions excessive expenses and questionable fund transfers, refusing to rubber-stamp directives by the City Manager, and daringly challenging the authority of the litigious upstart manager. Furthermore, the mayor’s position on giving citizens the right to vote on funding for a new City Hall project in opposition to the councilors who vote to ram through their pet project highlights her commitment to transparency and democratic decision-making.
The tension in the play builds as the mayor strives to maintain her principles and steers the city towards responsible policies against the odds. The plot raises doubts about whether she will ever overcome the scheming four councilors and manager opposing her. This uncertainty creates a palpable sense of anticipation and keeps the audience engaged throughout the performance.
The acting in “5 Angry Councilors” is commendable, with the mayor’s portrayal stealing the show. The actress effectively conveys the character’s inner strength and conviction, making her a relatable and inspiring figure. The interactions between the mayor and the unprincipled councilors are filled with charged emotions and intense debates, creating an electric atmosphere on stage.
The play’s writing is sharp and thought-provoking, providing an insightful commentary on the challenges faced by responsible leaders in a political landscape resistant to change and of old-boy relationships. It encourages the audience to reflect on the importance of individual courage, the power of principled leadership, and the need for inclusive decision-making processes in local governance.
While the outcome of the mayor’s struggle remains uncertain, “5 Angry Councilors” serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of overwhelming opposition, a determined leader can inspire change and challenge the status quo. This thought-provoking play is a must-see for anyone interested in politics, leadership, and the complexities of decision-making in a democratic society.

After 29 years in the solid waste industry, I will be making a significant change in my career. In early July, I will be leaving Tillamook County to take a position with the City of Bay City as City Manager.

I am grateful for the experiences I gained with Tillamook County, and proud of the progress we made during the past eleven years, including:
*During a time of turmoil in recycling markets, we managed to increase the quantity of materials recycled/recovered in our small rural county from just over 10,600 tons in 2012 to over 16,600 tons in 2021 – with the knowledge that each and every one of those tons is truly recycled,
*Our Household Hazardous Waste program is one of the most successful around, keeping over 100,000 lbs of harmful materials out of the environment each year,
*We launched our own Master Recycler class, starting with five students and graduating over 50 dedicated volunteers over the course of six years,
We demonstrated the value of locally recycled latex paint (over 10,000 gallons and counting!),
*Starting with nothing, we developed an organized composting program which now returns the nutrients from about 2,000 tons of yard debris back to our local soil each year, and
*Through an innovative combination of equipment, with grant support, we have collected, compacted, and recycled about 50,000 lbs (a mountain!) of Styrofoam into new products.

I am excited for what is yet to come, as significant upgrades and improvements to our transfer stations move forward, and especially as we prepare to benefit from the infrastructure improvements made possible through the Recycling Modernization Act.

Justin Weiss will be taking over my duties, as well as my phone numbers, as of July 5th.

I’d like to thank everyone who has supported these efforts, and been part of the experience, and I hope that our paths will again cross so that we can again collaborate.

Best regards,

David McCall

Price Reduction for my Mazda Miata Convertible

Submitted By: jansea2@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I have reduced the price for my 2000 Mazda Miata MX5. It is in excellent condition… runs great with only 73,737 miles. It comes equipped with a stereo FM Radio / CD player, power windows, remote entry and a security system. My original posting had a higher price because these cars are priced high on craigslist, auto trader, etc. But I’d like to sell the car and a coastal home would offer fun driving for the new owner. I’m located in Astoria and have flexible viewing hours.
