A Great NVHS Program on Saturday

Submitted By: info@nehalemvalleyhistory.org – Click to email about this post
Joanna Stelzig, the Public relations director for TPUD, is joining us at the NCRD Performing Arts Center on Saturday at 3:30 to talk about the history of bringing power to the valley. Joanna is going to enhance her presentation with some props that will show us the workings of the power utility. I love a good show and tell! She’s, also, bringing some of the people that make TPUD run. Should be a special treat. See you there.

Housing WANTED (not for me this time) – 2 bedrooms

Submitted By: jwmerc@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I am trying to help gather some housing ideas for a friend who is needing to “right-size” her living situation (recent empty-nester) – works at home for one of the regional hospitals doing “tele-health” so there’s where the second bedroom comes in – as an office. Pets must be OK as there is a loveable mature Golden and a couple of kitties to keep him company as part of the arrangement.
Her space in Clatsop County is now larger than needed so finding something from Rockaway north to Astoria in the $1800-$2000 range (depending on other costs such as utilities that is) – and here in November rather than later for timing.
I can forward ideas to her if you have some – Jeff Warren (yep – the guy with the honey etc) – jwmerc@gmail.com – or text to my cell: 208-424-0042 thanks for any help you can provide! JW

News update from the Nehalem Bay Health District

Nehalem Bay Health District Receives Generous Gift from the Jeffrey C. Kozlowski Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation

(Wheeler) – The Jeffrey C. Kozlowski Fund, a fund administered by the Oregon Community Foundation, has generously provided a $20,000 grant for the new Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy that is currently under construction in Wheeler.

The Jeffrey C. Kozlowski Fund was established by Linda Kozlowski and Bill Supak of Manzanita to honor the legacy of their son, Jeff Kozlowski, an accomplished biotech software engineer who died unexpectedly in 2013 at the young age of 42.

“On behalf of our board and all those who have worked so hard to advance the cause of improved local health and senior care in our community we are humbled and truly appreciative of this caring and magnanimous gift,” said Marc C. Johnson, president of the Health District board.

“The Health District will have such an amazing impact on our community,” Linda Kozlowski said, “Jeff would be very pleased to have had a small part!”

The new Health Center and Pharmacy, a 16,000 square foot facility, will triple the size of the current Health Center (the former Rinehart Clinic), providing space for new services, including dental, x-ray and specialty care. The project is on schedule and is projected to be completed in early September 2025.

Johnson said the Kozlowski funding will allow the Health District to pay for technology upgrades planned for the new Health Center.

Additionally, the Kozlowski gift, along with support from other Oregon funders including the Roundhouse, Ford Family and Samuel S. Johnson Foundations and a recent significant in-kind contribution from Hampton Lumber, allows the Health District flexibility in the use of bond funds approved by District voters in 2023. The District’s other current priorities include the ongoing renovation of the Nehalem Valley Care Center and the eventual development of workforce housing for health care and other essential workers.

Congratulations to Manzanita Mayor and Councilors

Submitted By: mkuestner10@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
A hearty congratulations to our re-elected Mayor, Kathryn Stock, our two re-elected City Councilors: Jerry Spegman and Tom Campbell. Thank you for continuing to volunteer for Manzanita!
And thank you to Manzanita voters for supporting our City Council and our City Manager, Leila Aman by voting YES, affirming their earlier actions moving us to Water Billing on a Monthlty Cycle.
Now we move on to exciting new challenges: Creating a new Comprehensive Plan, finishing our new City Hall and Police Station (looking more and more like buildings every day), putting in new water infrastructure along Classic and Necarney City Road as well as an actual new road surface and pathways for Classic!
Keep up the good work
Bravo!

Behind the Manzanita Vote

Submitted By: rkinor@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Manzanita will keep monthly water billing. The story behind the election results however  is the 204 voters who registered their disapproval of this Council decision.
The Referendum provided an opportunity to lay open a process marked with contradictory explanations by City officials, violation of an existing City Ordinance and real experience with the financial impact of these changes on household budgets that were at odds with promises by the City.
Were those 265 voters who voted to keep monthly billings willing to overlook the process and explanations really convinced that this decision was in the best interests of residents?  I can not answer that question.
What I do know is that when you have a Councilor admit that he could not find citizens willing to talk with him about their concerns on this matter, you have a problem. Those 204 voters are not a noisy minority but rather citizens who have witnessed years of Councils who believe unanimous decisions on all city business is the sign of a healthy governing process, avoid whenever possible appointment of citizens to Committees who may ask unwanted questions and ignore and label those citizens who dare challenge the status quo.
Maybe what those 204 voices were saying to you Councilor is entertain some skepticism on what you are being told by staff and your consultants, be confident enough in your policy positions that you can appoint citizens to committees that may have opinions that differ from you and be willing to ask more questions before you make a decision.
Finally, thank you to all who voted. Think about that, you got the opportunity to directly have a say in an important community decision.

Rabbits

Submitted By: dixiegainer@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
In the analogy about ducks and rabbits, I see there is a second part: the duck turned into an eagle, but unfortunately the rabbits remained rabbits. This was caused by the rabbits making a poor choice as to where to get their information. It is understandable in a way, as the media the rabbits watched flashed subliminal carrot images ever three of four seconds onto the screen. Let us all pray for the rabbits, so that they may receive better information in the future.
Or perhaps get into the Oregon deflection program for carrot addiction treatment.

Autumn Forest Therapy Walk
Thursday, November 7
12pm-2pm
Nehalem Or

Need a safe place to slow down and be present in the solace of nature? Forest Therapy was Inspired by the Japanese practice of Forest Bathing (or Shinrin-yoku), a mindfulness practice that invites you to immerse yourself in the forest through your senses.

As your dedicated guide, I will lead you on a journey through a beautiful rainforest with a series of “invitations” meant to awaken your senses and help you connect with nature in new ways.

After our walk, we will gather for tea and sharing. Participants emerge feeling lighter, stress-free, and deeply connected to the world around and within them. Join me in this experience where nature becomes your therapy.

Four green barstools for sale, bar height 29″ to seat height, 41″ to back of chair height. One of the chairs has a small rip in the seat, another chair is missing a cap on the bottom so it is slightly unlevel but usable…and probably fixable. Asking $40 for all. Located in Nehalem. A whimsical analogy

Submitted By: dwieb1@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Should there be any confusion about my recent posts, I’d like to offer an analogy:

Suppose there’s a duck and a great many wabbits. Some wabbits take a liking to the duck and how it quacks. Others are repelled by the quacking and think those who like the duck are confused or crazy. Nature guides complicate the matter by referring to the duck as just another wabbit, and this drives the others nuts. Yet the nature guides keep doing this even after two game wardens identify the quacker as a duck.

Here’s my point: there is nothing inherently evil or stupid about the wabbits who like the duck, and the others might stop twisting their tails in a bunch if the guides could bring themselves to call it a duck.

To push this tortured analogy out a bit further, if the wabbits decide to put the duck in charge it will just fly off and feather it’s own nest.
