Writing Your Own Obituary:
We promise you, you will likely regret it if you don’t 🙂
Facilitated by Kathie Hightower
Who better than you to write your own obituary?
And yes, it can be fun and enlightening and motivational. Kathie Hightower always read obituaries, “as an honoring.” Saddened by the many boring ones (likely fill-in-the-blanks at a funeral home), she enjoyed the fun ones that really shared the person’s story.
She had only written one, her moms, before Kathie’s husband Greg passed away in April. In writing his, and later seeing another friend’s and thinking (“Oh, I wish I’d included xxx.”:), she thought, “who will write mine?”
“I will,” she decided.
It’s not morbid; it’s practical and life-affirming.
Join us to get a good start on you own obituary (and for those planning a tombstone, tips on those as well.)
Kathie Hightower is a member of the Conscious Aging and Creating Community committee. She spent 25 years doing workshops around the world, on Conscious/Joyful Living. She used to teach obituary writing to women in their 20’s and 30’s to help them see whether or not they were living their lives the way they would want to have lived them…the way they would want to be remembered. This is a variation on the theme. Bring a pen and a journal or notebook paper.

Video is an excellent medium for manipulating the viewer. One only need examine their own emotional responses to videos to recognize the problem. We should never trust information conveyed by video is anything but entertainment. Didn’t movie credits used to end with a disclaimer?
83 year old Ed knows that most people are approachable and reasonable. But I think confronting others with rage is setting up interaction for failure and potential violence. Law enforcement and the military are trained to take command and control, so we should expect to give that up to them or face consequences. The current administration wants (needs) to have news video of those consequences to support their narrative and further violate constitutional checks and balances.
So I think we should be like Ed, probably warm and sincere, polite and respectful, since that will be the best way to realize our shared goals. That’s not giving up, it’s being smart and strategic.

“Everybody that I know who doesn’t live in Portland is convinced we burned it to the ground in 2020. That it’s some sort of nightmarish hellscape that looks like Mad Max, only with rain.” PSU Associate Professor of Sociology and expert on policing Aaron Rousell from Street Roots August 21, 2024.
Portland is not on fire. Portland is not war torn. Portland is a big city with all the problems a big city has—homelessness, drugs, crime. I was born and lived there or near enough for most of my life. Before NW 23rd was fancy and a one bedroom apartment near Good Sam cost $225 a month, you could work a regular job and live a regular life. There were still plenty of drugs around just different ones and way more violent crime than there is now. The crime rate has actually been steadily falling in Portland since 2020 so what’s the emergency that necessitates sending National Guard troops to American cities like Portland?
According to the Constitution there are only certain instances when a president is supposed to use the National Guard to police a city and none of these conditions exist in the cities where troops are being sent. There’s a good explanation of when, how and why a president can use the National Guard in a 2/28/2025 Substack article by Cyrus Javadi. It was reposted on the Pioneer’s website.
The ICE facility is on one block in the city of Portland. So the Guard is being deployed to protect one block and it’s estimated to cost $3.8 million dollars, which doesn’t count food and lodging.
Your technology knows what you like to read and what gets you clicking. The more we click the worse we usually feel because nobody is just looking at kitten videos these days. We’re a fearful bunch. We love us some bad news and a good conspiracy theory that reenforces whatever our beliefs are, so if you have a deep seated fear of people who are not like you, your technology will give you more of the same to feed that fear. If you believe Democrats or Republicans are the Antichrist or the Antifa you’ll get all the clickbait on the interwebs to keep you busy believing. The people with the power know that. They know that division serves them. They use fear as a tool and a distraction. Now that AI can replicate reality and there are few adults in the room to call a lie a lie, people are struggling to figure what’s real and what’s not.
I have a lot of friends in Portland and one of them is Ed, a retired attorney who happens to live near enough to the ICE facility in Portland’s south Waterfront to walk there on his 83 year old legs. He’s made it a practice to stop by and talk with the people protesting for the past three months. He’s not afraid and nothing bad has happened to him. It’s usually a group of about 30 people although it can be more. The other residents he’s talked with are more concerned about federal agents and National Guard troops encouraged to use “full force” than they are about the citizens protesting, as well they should be. Because when emotions are running hot and the people charged with community policing are not community police, bad things can and do happen.
Here’s an example. On May 4, 1970, the governor of Ohio called in the National Guard to intervene at Kent State where students were protesting the US invasion of Cambodia. When students didn’t disperse, Guardsmen advanced and opened fire on unarmed students killing 4 in a matter of thirteen seconds.
There are real things to be afraid of right now—hospitals closing, safety net programs shut down, masked ICE agents detaining undocumented people without criminal records, deportation to third countries without due process, domestic military action by a Department of War, the chilling of free speech. I could go on but you get the idea.
I can’t remember where I read this or who said it but it struck a chord for me—America is the home of the brave and the land of the free and sometimes you have to be brave to be free.

Just a reminder of the Protest in Nehalem on October 4th, Saturday, from noon to 2 PM. Come when you can and stay as long as you like. This looks like a very busy weekend for local events.
The North County Resistance group organizes these peaceful protests to advocate for positive change in our community, promoting justice, equity, and neighborly support. We invite all community members—both regular participants and newcomers—to join us in making a meaningful impact together.
Bring your signs, your chairs, your positive attitude, and a couple of cans of food for our local North County Food Bank. And yes, checks and cash are greatly appreciated. We generally have someone from the Food Bank at the Protest, and they take the food to Wheeler every Tuesday morning.
The North County Resistance group would appreciate everyone attending these Protests to know it is our intention to keep all our activities safe, peaceful, and orderly. You will see some people wearing orange vests at the Protests. If there is any problem, you should contact these people and let them solve the problem. North County Resistance does this to keep everyone safe. We want you to be calm and stay calm—and be a team player when you come to protest. Please listen to the people in the orange vests. They may ask you to not cross the road in the middle of Hwy. 101 but to please use the crosswalk—simple concept, right? They may ask you to not have your sign too far out onto the highway, which might hamper a driver’s line of vision. Lots of these things are common sense, but if there is a moment when things begin to unravel, please listen to the people in orange vests. No, we have not had anything unravel at these Protests. We may practice on this coming Saturday to see what we might need to work on for the BIG NO KINGS event on October 18, in Manzanita.
We need more volunteers to serve as Marshalls at the October event—these team members play a vital role in keeping everyone safe and organized. If you’re interested in helping out, please contact me, Patty, at 503-368-6081 or speak with me at Saturday’s protest. Your support makes a real difference!
The website below is all about Safety at the Protests. Thanks very much for listening.

But in my view, this troop deployment is about Drumf and Fox News Pete, Secretary of Treason, doing the bidding oil, bomb-makers, and bankers, also known as the military industrial complex.
Drumf and Pete are about to attack Venezuela and Iran (for Israel), with an escalation of NATOs war against Russian waiting in wings. That’s the most likely reason the guard is being sent to Wokeland in my view, as the city is quite quiet other than woke-legislative street crime problem.
Again, if extreme violence shows up, look to Soros agitators and traitorous J6-type feds. Anitfa punks too, but 100% antifa is infiltrated by J6-traitorous fed-types.
Most genuine antifa are pathetic punks, and the right knows this.
Yesterday, Drumf wrote on his Lies Social acct:
“We’re only going in because, as American Patriots, WE HAVE NO CHOICE. LAW AND ORDER MUST PREVAIL IN OUR CITIES, AND EVERYWHERE ELSE!”
THE PRESIDENT LIES!!!!!!!!!!! GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!!!!!!!!!! FASCIST REGIME!!!!!!!!!
EPSTEIN EPSTEIN EPSTEIN EPSTEIN EPSTEIN EPSTEIN!!!!!!!!!!!
LAW AND ORDER MY ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Epstein is a Drumf problem, but actually more of a democrat problem: Clinton, gates, Chomsky, New Mexico gov Ricchardson, and Senate Intel head Wyden runs cover with his limited hang-out Epstein ;investigations’ that he seems to have dropped.)
GAZA GAZA GAZA GAZ GAZA!!!!!!!!!!!! (WAR CRIMES/GENOCIDE). LAW AND ORDER MY ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Also a two-party problem)
BOMBED IRAN?????? TREASON TREASON TREASON!!!!!!!! LAW AND ORDER MY ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
STARTING A WAR WITH VENEZUELA????? TREASON TREASON TREASON!!!!!! LAW AND ORDER MY ASS!!!!!!!!!! all linked by….Israel. just sayin.
HEY DRUMF! GO BUILD YOUR 200-million dollar ballroom and get the hell out of Oregon you anti-American fake-christian MAGA FRAUD!!!!!!!!!
And to the Oregon National Guard members! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!!! SORRY IT’S TAKING THIS FORM!!!!!!
We all know you would rather be home in Medford or wherever with your families, awaiting an actual emergency, which is why ya’ll signed up in the first place.
Anyway, thank you, and I hope you can enjoy our food carts and strip clubs, they are world-class!
