Season of Light

Come to the Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church for the Chorus Concert next Sunday, December 3 at 3:00 in the afternoon.

Details are on the poster.

See you there. I’ll be taking tickets…. Oh and some of the church’s Christmas Bazaar items will be “browsable” for sale during the intermission. Of course there will be goodies provided by the Chorus members (always yummy).

Local ensemble Chelsea Lafey and the Salt Shakers will deliver a dance mix of vintage swing, jump blues and jazz at the Seaside Elks Lodge ballroom (324 Avenue A, Seaside) this Saturday night, November 25 from 7-9 pm. This band features dynamic vocalist Chelsea LaFey, a swinging rhythm section and horns. Public is welcome, all ages! Doors open at 5:30 pm, free swing dance lessons at 6 pm with instructor Richie Small. $15 cover, cash only (helps to benefit the Elks Scholarship fund.) BBQ dinner available for $15.

This is a free-flowing dance and movement experience where you are encouraged to dance and enjoy the experience however you’d like with an intention of connecting deeper to yourself and exploring movement without words.
It’s an open space to play, celebrate life, practice embodiment modalities, enjoy music, process emotions, connect with others, and ultimately be nourished by the experience on a physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual level.

Dance Etiquette/Tips:
*All are welcome – Family friendly events – Come as you are.
*Flow toys are welcome!
*Bring a water bottle and layers.
*Bring kindness and respect for yourself and others and your willingness to explore and to dive into the ecstasy of spirit available through movement.
*No outside shoes on the dance floor if possible (dirty floors aren’t fun to roll around on)
*Please no strong scents.
*We ask that you limit talking during the dance set. Set up, break time, and the foyer area are great places to have longer conversations to limit distractions for others.
*We are encouraging everyone to be mindful of each other’s safety and health and stay home if you are not feeling well, or have been exposed to someone sick. Follow your own judgment on whether to wear a mask or not.

Tea, Treats, and Holiday Cheer at the Library
The Cannon Beach Library’s Annual Holiday Tea will be held Saturday December 2nd at the library, 131 N Hemlock Street, in Cannon Beach, Oregon. This is a FREE community event sponsored by members and volunteers of the library. The tea runs from 1 to 4 p.m., before the City’s Annual Lamp Lighting Ceremony across the street at Sandpiper Square.
Community members and visitors are welcome to enjoy tea, hot mulled cider, home-baked cookies, and other treats in front of our cozy fireplace, surrounded by charming holiday decorations. The Holiday Tea is a chance for us to come together as a community to enjoy good food, good cheer, and good company. Come celebrate the season!
We’re looking for bakers, servers to pour tea and hot cider, helpers to keep platters of treats replenished and tea pots filled, and folks to help with set up and clean up. NCRD PUTTING ON FREE EVENT
This free event is happening on Saturday, December 16th from 11am to 1pm at the North County Recreation District (NCRD), located in Nehalem. The event will feature a free brunch and beverages. GINGERBREAD HOUSES

The tradition of making decorated gingerbread houses started in Germany in the early 1800s. According to certain researchers, the first gingerbread houses were the result of the well-known Grimm’s fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” in which the two children abandoned in the forest found an edible house made of bread with sugar decorations. After this book was published, German bakers began baking ornamented fairy-tale houses of lebkuchen (gingerbread). These became popular during Christmas, a tradition that came to America with Pennsylvanian German immigrants. According to other food historians, the Grimm brothers were speaking about something that already existed.
In modern times the tradition has continued in certain places in Europe. In Germany the Christmas markets still sell decorated gingerbread before Christmas. (Lebkuchenhaus or Pfefferkuchenhaus are the German terms for a gingerbread house.) Making gingerbread houses is still a way of celebrating Christmas in many families. They are built traditionally before Christmas using pieces of baked gingerbread dough assembled with melted sugar. The roof tiles can consist of frosting or candy. The gingerbread house yard is usually decorated with icing to represent snow.
A gingerbread house does not have to be an actual house, although it is the most common. It can be anything from a castle to a small cabin, or another kind of building, such as a church, an art museum, or a sports stadium, and other items, such as cars, gingerbread men and gingerbread women, can be made of gingerbread dough.
In most cases, royal icing is used as an adhesive to secure the main parts of the house, as it can be made quickly and forms a secure bond when set.
In Sweden gingerbread houses are prepared on Saint Lucy’s Day. Since 1991, the people of Bergen, Norway, have built a city of gingerbread houses each year before Christmas. Named Pepperkakebyen (Norwegian for “the gingerbread village”), it is claimed to be the world’s largest such city. Every child under the age of 12 can make their own house at no cost with the help of their parents. In 2009, the people of Bergen were shocked when the gingerbread city was destroyed in an act of vandalism. A group of building design, construction, and sales professionals in Washington, D.C., also collaborate on a themed “Gingertown” every year.

No building permit required for this first annual Gingerbread House Display. Get those cookies baked and those jellybeans in order…and don’t forget the snow! Come on down to North County Recreation District’s Holiday Social. This is a free event happening on Saturday, December 16th, from 11 am-1pm. Again, this event is free and will feature brunch and beverages and free activities for kids.
Rules for the Gingerbread Housing Development-none. Or we might just make up the rules as we go along. The sky is the limit, but just in case it rains you’ll need to get it through the front door at North County Recreation District. Let us know if you want to participate in this event so we can make sure we have enough room for all the houses. The North Oregon Coast Symphony begins its 2023-2024 season with two classical music concerts this weekend. The orchestra will perform on Saturday, November 18, at St. Catherine Episcopal Church (36335 N. Hwy. 101, Nehalem, OR) beginning at 3 pm, and Sunday, November 19, at the Charlene Larsen Performing Arts Center (588 16th St., Astoria, OR) beginning at 3 pm.

Admission for adults is $10; youth 18 and under are free, but those 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be sold at the door for the St. Catherine concert (cash or personal check only). Tickets for the Larsen Center concert will be sold online at LarsenCenter.org or by phone at 503 338 9132.

The programs will feature two soloists. Diane Amos will play the Andante movement from Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, made famous in the 1967 movie Elvira Madigan. Jude Matulich-Hall will play the spooky violin solo inviting the skeletons to dance in Saint-Saëns’s Danse Macabre.
Other selections will include Mendelssohn’s Wedding March, Strauss’s Blue Danube Waltz, Berlioz’s March Troyenne, Sibelius’s Finlandia, and Rimsky-Karsakov’s Procession of the Nobles.

This non-profit ensemble, under the direction of conductor Cory Pederson, brings together musicians from the north Oregon and south Washington coast to keep classical music alive and affordable for local audiences. For more information, please visit our website: nocsymphony.org.
