I’m filling the last few of the 30 openings for the raw honey tasting & talk taking place this MONDAY September 9th from 7:15 to 8:30 at the NCRD. We’ll be tasting five different honeys (including a mystery selection at the end) – discussing a wide range of topics honey – including crystallization, what to look for in labeling, fake honey, crime in the honey business – whether “local” really means as much in the world – and more. Bring your questions – a clear palate – and hopefully you will come away a better-prepared consumer!!!

About the Band:

Mojo Holler weaves threads from mountain ranges to the Mississippi Delta into a tapestry of indie folk rock.

Musician Mister Baker channels innate genius through lap steel, slide, and dobro.

Missi is a genuine Appalachian ‘Mountain Mama’ whose vocals and percussion bring Southern heart and soul to each song.

Notable northwest musician and songwriter, Randy Yearout is on bass and acoustic guitars.

Willamette Week’s 2023 Best of Portland: “They sing about Mississippi boat queens, trains, juke joints, church bells—all things backwoods—with devotion and delicacy.”

The band formed in 2012 as the wife/husband duo Missi & Mister Baker. Their debut album, Where Black Ravens Flew, led to a showcase performance at South By Southwest in 2016.

The late Lisa Lepine, a Portland legend in music, said of their mission:

“They weave their dark, modern spirituals from shared roots in magic, Americana, and metaphysics.

CAPE LOOKOUT STEWARDSHIP DAY – WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH

Cape Lookout Stewardship Day offers opportunities to give back and work to maintain our natural areas and restore healthy coastal landscapes.
Lend a hand clearing weeds and invasive ivy from recent plantings established at Cape Lookout State Park.

During the winter, WEBS volunteers helped OR State Parks staff plant a large variety of native trees, shrubs, and plants. For this event, park staff along with WEBS volunteers, will be on hand to supervise participants who will be clearing around the established winter plantings, removing unwanted plants that may slow their growth. “Our goal is aimed at improving and restoring the habitat within the park”, says WEBS director Chrissy Smith.

If possible, we ask participants to provide their own:
work gloves
hand pruners
shovels
appropriate gear for Oregon Coast in September
It is also recommended that participants bring a reusable water bottle, and snacks.

Join SOLVE, Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS (www.netartsbaywebs.org), Oceanside Surf Co./Current Cafe, Netarts Oceanside Fire, and other Tillamook County partners to clean up the areas around Netarts and Oceanside on Saturday, September 21st, from 10 AM – 1 PM.
Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS members and their partners have been working with SOLVE to host cleanups in the area from Cape Lookout to Cape Meares to Bay Ocean for over a decade.
Join them this year and help protect marine life and maintain the beauty of our coast. This beach cleanup is family-friendly, dog-friendly, and volunteers of all ages will find the event fun and rewarding.
Remember, ocean shores can be dangerous. Avoid logs in the water. Keep your distance from marine mammals, and never turn your back on the ocean! If you find any hazardous material, please alert the Beach Cleanup Captain. And remember, it’s more fun to work as part of a team. Bring a buddy, stay safe, and have fun!

What to Bring: Please wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and bring a backpack for hands-free convenience. Feel free to bring tools (recycled trash bags, buckets, etc.) if available and a reusable water bottle to support our sustainability efforts.
What’s Provided: Trash bags and gloves are available to all volunteers at check-in. A small supply of trash grabbers can be loaned. If you have your own, please bring them.
Restrooms: Public restrooms are available at the check-in locations.
Parking: Parking at check-in is limited however people usually move in and out quickly. A day pass will be provided to any volunteer cleaning sections of the beach requiring parking in a fee parking lot.
Transit: There is a nearby bus stop to the check-in location. Please see the NW Connect Oregon website and The Wave for more information:

Join us on September 27-28 for a Garden Mosaic class with instructor Aja Ngo to create beautiful and durable glass mosaic suitable for enhancing your outdoor spaces!

Aja Ngo will provide a design template and all of the tools, materials, adhesives, and substrates. In this two-day workshop you will learn about the appropriate tools to use, glass cutting and grout techniques, and how to make a mosaic durable for outdoor use. You will create a finished piece that can be displayed in your garden.

The Cannon Beach Library’s Annual Fall Festival Fundraiser is Saturday, September 28th from 12 to 4 p.m. This free, fun and family-friendly event promises a day filled with exciting activities for all ages. In addition to announcing the winners of our month-long raffle and silent auction, there will also be a book and puzzle swap and child and adult crafting. Bring any pre-loved adult or children’s book, game, or puzzle, and take a different one home. Use old and worn books to craft fun decorations and fall crowns. Attendees can also look forward to fantastic door prizes and goodies throughout the day.

Raffle tickets and silent auction bids are available from Friday, August 30th through Saturday, September 28th. Tickets are just 1 for $5, 3 for $10, or 7 for $20. You don’t need to be present to win!

All items have been generously donated by our wonderful local merchants, with every dollar raised going to support our nonprofit library.

Explore the fascinating world of fall coastal fungi and their use making natural dyes.

Wood Fired Sauna, Cold Plunge (optional add on)

Prepare for your dye workshop with a cleansing and relaxing wood fired sauna and cold plunge.

After your sauna, enjoy some light snacks and tea before you dive into creating with mushrooms!

11:30- 2pm: Mushroom Natural Dye Workshop

This workshop will cover the types of coastal fungi used to produce various colors on wool and silk. 

There will be a hands-on dye session when students will dye silk bandanas and mini skein of yarn to take home.

Each attendee will be provided with a list of dye mushrooms found in our region and a pattern for a fungi-themed knit headband. 

The workshop includes how to set up a home dye studio, prepare fibers for the dye pot, and how to store mushrooms for dying.

Participants may purchase additional silk or wool fiber to dye during the workshop.

Your Guide:

Erica Clark lives on traditional lands of the Clatsop/Chinook people. Her family stewards 20+ acres of forestland on the outskirts of Astoria.

The start of her natural dye journey using wild fungi began on a rainy September evening in Cordova, Alaska in 2010.

She sells hand-dyed goods on the coast and has taught mushroom dye workshops at several fungi festivals and for members of the Oregon Mycological Society since 2021.

Erica coordinates an annual mushroom themed makers market in Astoria on the Winter Solstice.

The Rummage Sale at the Nehalem Bay Methodist Church had a surprise. As many items as were sold were replaced with NEW material. As people bought stuff, more stuff arrived.

If you visited us today, Saturday, you should drop back by tomorrow, Sunday or Monday morning. There has been about a 50% turnover just today.

The Church is located at 36050 Tenth St. in Nehalem, just off Hgwy 101. Proceeds from the sale go to support the church’s charitable functions.

About the Author In her book Finish Strong: Putting Your Priorities First at Life’s End, Barbara writes about protecting our values and priorities during challenging decisions at the end of life. Her focus is empowering individuals to assert their agency and keep personal values and beliefs at the forefront amid the complexities of healthcare choices. Barbara’s career as a clinician, attorney, Oregon Senate committee staff, and healthcare executive taught her about dignity and agency at the end of life. In 1994, she co-authored and campaigned for the Oregon Death with Dignity Act, establishing the right for terminally ill, mentally capable adults to self-administer life-ending medication. Years of activism defending the nation’s first medical-aid-in-dying law made her a seasoned spokesperson and effective champion of patient-directed healthcare. Barbara is a part-time resident living on the North Coast.

Award-winning author Kerilynn Wilson will discuss her debut graphic novel, “The Faint of Heart,” fantasy story about living in a world where people no longer have hearts, during a presentation sponsored by the Cannon Beach Library on Sept. 7.
Wilson will open the library’s Northwest Authors Series season with a presentation at 2 p.m. in the library, 131 N. Hemlock St. This is a free, hybrid event; attend in person at the library or watch online via the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org.
The 2024 Oregon Book Award winner for graphic literature, “The Faint of Heart,” is about June, a teenager who lives in a world where humans remove their hearts to avoid feeling pain. June is the only person left with a heart. When she finds a heart in a jar abandoned in an alley, June hopes to return her sister to normal with it and begins an unexpected adventure with a heartless boy who is somehow beginning to feel again.
Although she lives in Oregon City, her mind tends to wander to made-up places in her head. Those places might be filled with flying jellyfish and birds that eat the stars. She says she has a “love of the weird and wonderful.”
When Wilson isn’t working or making up different places, she enjoys making bagels, crafting insect sculptures and going on walks with her husband and two daughters.
The Northwest Authors Series committee hosts authors from September through May. In March, the committee honors local writers during the Writers Read Celebration.

The McMinnville short film festival is back at the NCRD Performing Arts Center! They will be showing short documentaries, focusing on environmental topics. The filmmakers will be present and will stay for a Q&A afterward the screenings. This event will take place on Saturday, 9/7 at 6pm and tickets are $10 and will be available at the door.
