As winter and wet weather settle into the Oregon North Coast, help TKO brush back some of the persistent and evergreen vegetation encroaching on the beautiful Neah-Kah-Nie trail. We will work at a gentle pace and work our way up the trail, brushing as we go. If we’re lucky enough for clear views we can take some time for lunch near the summit. All tools will be provided, we just need you!

Winter Songs is a show inspired by the season with music to honor the shortest days and longest nights. Weaving together songs, poetry, instrumentals, traditional and original music and a few covers, Kathryn Claire invites the audience to join together in celebration of the season and to bring light to the darkness. Kathryn Claire has been doing a seasonal winter show since 2013 working with a variety of artists. In 2018, Don Henson joined her for Winter Songs on piano and percussion before incorporating Sid Ditson on violin and viola in 2019. The blend of this trio is stunning and their energy together is joyful and heartfelt. Kathryn, Sid and Don reunited in 2022 and released an EP featuring music Kathryn wrote specifically for the show along with a single “Dark of December”. The trio is thrilled to be returning to the White Clover Grange for their 3rd year of this show.
With her violin and voice at the center of her music, Kathryn Claire weaves together stories and melodies rooted in her classical and traditional musical background while infusing each song and composition with an energy and electricity that is palpable. Her musicality and joy on stage is infectious. Honest and poetic writing, crystalline vocals, impassioned violin compositions, and an ability to move seamlessly across genres, are the hallmark of Kathryn Claire’s original and diverse sound.
Don Henson has toured extensively with Kathryn Claire in the Pacific Northwest and played with her “Winter Songs” show since 2018. Don works frequently with Will West and Skip Vonkuske in Portland, OR. His band, ‘Sneakin Out’ has played various stages with Pink Martini, on The Tonight Show (With Jay Leno) and had the honor of playing Carnegie Hall.
Sid Ditson has toured with Kathryn in Belgium and the Netherlands and has been an integral part of Kathryn’s music over the past decade. Sid has been playing violin since childhood. He loves to explore the sometimes irreverent blend of fiddle and violin styles, and brings to the stage and studio a versatility with the instrument that is truly unique. Classical, indie, bluegrass, Celtic and improv are all a part of Sid’s palette, along with an exquisite tone and depth of expression. Sid is often caught grinning while playing, finding it impossible to hide the immense joy that music brings.

Fire to honor returning salmon

Nothing fancy, just a few songs and maybe a story or two. We’ll light the flames around 3:30 pm at the mouth of Ecola Creek, near the Welcoming Man.
Musical Story Time at Manzanita Library

The North Oregon Coast Symphony, Tillamook County Library, and Astoria Public Library have partnered to bring live music and hands-on instrument experiences to local preschool children through stories. The first events will be Monday, December 2nd at 10 AM at the Manzanita Library, and Tuesday, December 3rd at 10 AM at the Charlene Larsen Center for the Performing Arts. Through an enchanting read-aloud text and beautiful artwork, a thrilling and fantastical story of a farmer, a gentle old lady, a dancing dog, and one brave, tiny duckling will warm the heart. NOCS musicians Samantha Kushnick (cello) and Shannon Steele (violin) will accompany the reading of the story. Children will learn more about stringed instruments as the musicians provide demonstrations. Child-sized instruments will be available to examine and play after the story.
This event is free and open to children aged 3-5 and their adults. North Oregon Coast Symphony, a non-profit orchestra, brings together musicians from the north Oregon and south Washington coast to perform classical music for local audiences. Two streams, Jetty Creek and McMillan Creek, flow through this estuary and into the Nehalem River. The marsh is currently under threat. It is privately owned and part of it is in immediate danger of being developed. If this happens, Oregon will lose this special place forever. We need to stand together and do what we can to protect it.
In July 2024, the Rockaway Beach Planning Commission approved the Nedonna Wave Development, which would allow for a new housing subdivision within the Nedonna Marsh. In response to this approval, the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition has submitted an appeal to the Rockaway Beach City Council. Oregon Shores is being represented by the Crag Law Center. To support their efforts, North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (NCCWP) is starting a letter-writing campaign. We are encouraging everyone to send in comments and letters supporting this appeal. We also think it would be helpful to email the City Council members and express our strong opposition to the proposed construction of homes in the wetland area, as we believe it is unconscionable.
Oral public testimony will be heard at the meeting. If you are in person, you can sign up to speak at the beginning of the meeting. If you are attending virtually by zoom, use the raised hand icon to signal that you would like to say something.

Making Visible the Invisible: A Community Conversation about Death and Dying. Applying the values of Acceptance, Belonging, Connection, and Legacy, Death Cafe is a co-generational gathering that aims to create a comfortable and open space for people to gather and discuss topics related to death, dying, and mortality. It provides a platform for individuals to share their thoughts, fears, and experiences surrounding death in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. Adhering to Death Cafe’s mission, participation is free, although contributions to the Collective are appreciated. Death Cafe meets in person every month.

There is a lot happening at the City of Manzanita worthy of celebration! Mark your calendar for the third annual Holiday Tree Lighting party on December 6th starting at 4pm. Santa will be arriving on the Nehalem Bay Fire and Rescue Big Rig, and the Neah Kah Nie choir will be performing this year! Holiday DJ, cookies, and warm beverages will be provided for your enjoyment. Please join your friends and family for this holiday tradition on the site of the new city hall at 655 Manzanita.
Pedestrians and Cyclists celebrate as Manzanita City Council adopted a reduced speed limit of 20 miles per hour in the city to help create a safer environment for walkers and bikers! The city has a limited number of FREE yard signs available for pick up during city hall office hours 9-12pm, Monday through Thursday. Show your support for “20 is Plenty” in the city by placing one of these limited-edition signs in your yard!
Last but not least the City is updating the Comprehensive Plan for the first time in nearly 30 years! The Comprehensive Plan provides a policy framework to guide the future of Manzanita. This plan is community driven which means we need to hear from you! We held our first community summit on October 28th to a sold-out house at the Pine Grove Community Center where community members shared their ideas on the future of housing in our community. But we want to hear from more of you, so we have posted a survey online for you to take to give us your input. There is a recording of the meeting introduction and a short survey – please take the time to share your ideas about the future of housing in our wonderful city. You can link to the survey from the city’s main page at www.ci.manzanita.or.us/ There are also lots of resources available about the effort on the project website.

We will discuss significant reasons why developing homesites in the Nedonna Wetlands is a misguided plan. Resources will be provided to help draft letters and prepare oral arguments for presentation at the upcoming Public Hearing, where the appeal will be reviewed. Also, we will present a slideshow offering an aerial view of local, private timberlands in Clatsop and Tillamook Counties.
The Information and Work Session will be held at St Mary by the Sea Catholic Church, 275 S Pacific St, Rockaway Beach, Or.
This will also be a potluck, so please bring something to share.
