Holiday Printmaking Workshop – CBAA

Submitted By: info@cannonbeacharts.org – Click to email about this post
DECEMBER 10, 2022
Holiday Printmaking Workshop

Instructor: Ben Rosenberg

Time: 10 – 4:00PM

*Bring a Sack Lunch

Location: Cannon Beach History Center.

Cost: Members: $100 plus $15 materials

Non – Member: $125 plus $15 materials

JOIN CBAA and receive a TAX DEDUCTION

Details: Join Ben Rosenberg as he introduces the principles and practices of creating monoprints and monotypes. Monotype is a distinctive print made by pressing paper against a painted or inked surface. When creating a monotype, it cannot be replicated again. It is a highly individual creation, much like painting, as it allows for spontaneity, “happy accidents,” and working along a plate surface to bring a wide range of marks that can be obtained through the creation of an image.

Topics include basic theory and use of color and composition in working with water-based, mixed media, and a variety of surfaces. This workshop will involve both conceptual approaches and direct observations of a variety of student investigative resources.

You will explore various monotype styles, techniques, and media used with rollers, stencils, textured surfaces, brushes, and various inventive wiping tools to create unusual one-of-a-kind prints.

Through lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and printing time, participants will develop a command of the technical aspects of monotypes and monoprints (color mixing, paint application, materials), and the properties of creating an image (line and shape, color concept, composition, abstraction) and an understanding of how formal choices create meaning.

The day will begin with a lecture and discussion, followed by an afternoon for studio time. This class is a place where you can engage your own artistic interest and explore your personal voice.

Bring your ideas and be willing to take them further. It is a time and place to soak up everything you can and take risks.

Materials to Bring (All Optional)
Q-Tips
Brushes (old and stiff brushes are ok)
Rags (t-shirt fabric is perfect)
Rubber gloves to keep hands clean
Scraping materials: old credit cards, toothpicks, sticks (items you can scratch into inked surfaces)
Reference materials such as photos, drawings, sketchbook, etc.
Stencils
Collage materials
Sack lunch

He is inspired by his surroundings whether on a bike ride, walk, or in a kayak paddling up the Nehalem River. He received a BFA in Printmaking from Temple University and an MFA in Studio Arts from Portland State University. His monotypes have been used in many publications nationally as illustrations. He has taught an extensive range of art making in all kinds of places to diverse populations for as long as he has been making art. EIGHT TREASURES QIGONG
In November I will be teaching Eight Treasures Qigong in the beautiful sanctuary space at St Catherine’s church in Nehalem

It is one of the earliest Qigong forms in China dating back to the 12th century when it was developed to help Buddhist Monks prevent problems with joints and tendons. The practice of Eight Treasures allows us to move more freely and keep qi or life energy moving throughout our body.
It is designed to build strong bones, make tendons more flexible, and strengthen organ-energy systems.

I also will be teaching a self massage practice, calming breathing techniques, and will end with a compassionate heart meditation.

Wear something comfortable to move in.
Masks are not required but please wear one if that makes you more comfortable.

A little bit about me…. I became interested in Qigong over 30 years ago. In the last 10 years I have studied with Ling Gui International Healing Qigong School and am certified in several of their Medical Qigong forms. I love to share this powerful healing tool.
Warmly,
Janet Maher

Hide and Seek: Environmental DNA for Pacific Lamprey Conservation w/ Dr. Kellie Carim

Submitted By: info@nehalemwatershed.org – Click to email about this post
On November 10th, 2022 Dr Kellie Carim, Research Ecologist at the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute, will share her recent work on mapping Pacific Lamprey populations using environmental DNA sampling. Environmental DNA sampling, also known as eDNA, is the process of taking water samples and sequencing the DNA found there to identify what species are using that area of a stream or river.

In 2021, Dr Carim, the Lower Nehalem Watershed Council, and other regional partners coordinated to sample for Pacific Lamprey in the Nehalem Basin. All together, they sampled 42 locations within the watershed! Those samples were then processed by Dr Carim in her lab at the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute. The result is a better map of Pacific Lamprey distribution in the Nehalem Basin.

Dr. Kellie Carim is a Research Ecologist at the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute in Missoula, MT. She received her B.A. in Biology from Carleton College and her Ph.D. in Fish and Wildlife Biology from the University of Montana. Her research combines genetics tools and information, as well as aquatic ecology to inform stewardship of wilderness areas, and to understand the benefits of wilderness to broader landscapes and ecosystems. Her research interests are broad and include engaging diverse partnerships to address conservation and management of aquatic resources. In her spare time, she enjoys cross-country ski racing and spending time outdoors with her partner, Tyler, and her best (canine) friend, Ravi.

The talk will be on November 10th at 7 pm, hosted on Zoom, and is free to the public. The zoom link is us02web.zoom.us/j/84302984100 or on the Facebook event at www.facebook.com/lnwc1.
