News update from the Nehalem Bay Health District

Nehalem Bay Health District Receives Generous Gift from the Jeffrey C. Kozlowski Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation

(Wheeler) – The Jeffrey C. Kozlowski Fund, a fund administered by the Oregon Community Foundation, has generously provided a $20,000 grant for the new Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy that is currently under construction in Wheeler.

The Jeffrey C. Kozlowski Fund was established by Linda Kozlowski and Bill Supak of Manzanita to honor the legacy of their son, Jeff Kozlowski, an accomplished biotech software engineer who died unexpectedly in 2013 at the young age of 42.

“On behalf of our board and all those who have worked so hard to advance the cause of improved local health and senior care in our community we are humbled and truly appreciative of this caring and magnanimous gift,” said Marc C. Johnson, president of the Health District board.

“The Health District will have such an amazing impact on our community,” Linda Kozlowski said, “Jeff would be very pleased to have had a small part!”

The new Health Center and Pharmacy, a 16,000 square foot facility, will triple the size of the current Health Center (the former Rinehart Clinic), providing space for new services, including dental, x-ray and specialty care. The project is on schedule and is projected to be completed in early September 2025.

Johnson said the Kozlowski funding will allow the Health District to pay for technology upgrades planned for the new Health Center.

Additionally, the Kozlowski gift, along with support from other Oregon funders including the Roundhouse, Ford Family and Samuel S. Johnson Foundations and a recent significant in-kind contribution from Hampton Lumber, allows the Health District flexibility in the use of bond funds approved by District voters in 2023. The District’s other current priorities include the ongoing renovation of the Nehalem Valley Care Center and the eventual development of workforce housing for health care and other essential workers.

Art in the Manzanita Library November

Submitted By: susantone@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
This month, NTLF Art in the Library Series presents the work of local Nehalem artist Glenna Gray, in the Manzanita Library through November. “I have painted for years, done all sorts of art and crafts, and taught art at the junior high level, but nothing ever caught my attention and delighted my senses like felting. A needle felting class at the Hoffman Center taught by Jeanine Rumble got me started. I taught myself wet felting (thanks to YouTube). I learned about Moy Mackay, a Scottish fiber artist, and saw her exquisite creations, which combine wet felting, needle felting, and stitching. I signed up for one of her workshops and went to Scotland two years ago to study with her. Since then, I have been chosen for the Cannon Beach Arts Association’s 2024 arts grant and have started teaching classes in needle felting, with the intention to include wet felting soon.” Glenna’s work is multi-dimensional, soft, warm, sculptural and shown in several local shops. “I prefer not to put glass over the works as it blunts the beautiful texture and dimensionality of the medium. Shadow boxes seem to allow the depth to show through. I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I love creating them.”
If you are interested in purchasing any of Glenna Gray’s pieces, you can contact her at glenna@nehalemtel.net or 503-354-4953.

United Paws’ Kittens of the Week: Grant and River

Submitted By: unitedpawshelp@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Grant is a male, domestic short hair, who sports a distinctive golden-and-brown bullseye coat. Shy at first, Grant now comes running for attention when humans enter his orbit. He loves wrestling with his rescue buddy, River, and hasn’t met a toy he doesn’t like! Grant loves to compete with River for his foster’s love and attention. He even rolls over on his back so she can stroke his beautiful golden belly!
River is a handsome boy with silver-gray stripes and entrancing bluish eyes that look like deep pools of celadon. When he wants to spend time with you, he’ll put his feet on your chest while moving in for kisses. River is interested in exploring new places and playing with other kittens and cats. He gets very excited when he learns about a new toy that grabs his attention, especially when his buddy Grant is interested in the same toy. These two kittens are buddies; they peacefully sleep together and play together. They would make a great pair to adopt but will also do fine individually.
A kind-hearted lady in a trailer park where Grant and River were born, was feeding about ten abandoned kittens and cats. Eventually, she realized she needed help and the cats needed medical attention and to be spayed / neutered to curb anymore litters. She reached out to United Paws and volunteers caught four of the kittens, including Grant and River. The four kittens have all been cared for, spayed / neutered, and are wonderfully socialized. Now, Grant and River are ready for loving forever homes.
Read more on United Paws’ website about kittens and cats available for adoption. Visit www.unitedpaws.wordpress.org for more adoption info and an adoption application. You can also email United Paws at unitedpawsapps@gmail.com. Or Call United Paws at 503-842-5663.

Do you have noises in the attic, odors in the crawlspace?
It is officially rodent season.

As the cold wet season arrives rodents are looking for warm dry places to hole up for the winter.

Rural Organizing Project offers post election zoom meeting Nov 7

Submitted By: barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
This information came from Rural Organizing Project that we thought was worth passing on.

Barbara and Chuck

rop.org/

From ROP:

Quote from one of the leaders for post election zoom meeting
“How can we make it possible for everyone to live as a whole person, to have self-determination, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to have access to material necessities as well as joy?”

Welp…here we go. Ballots dropped this week, and somehow, seeing them hit mailboxes makes what we’re facing in the coming weeks even more real. Are you feeling the fear and anxiety stirred up by this moment in our political history? We know we are. Alongside the fear, there has also been so much energy and unprecedented voter engagement in support of democracy and to stop rising authoritarianism–an energy we want to engage and move into the long-haul organizing that will create the depth of changes our communities actually need.

Whether you’ve been knocking on doors for weeks or wishing you could stick your head under a rock until this election is over, the divisiveness of election season has taken a toll on all of us. We don’t know exactly what the outcome of the election will be, how quickly we will know that outcome, or what the blowback might look like. There will be a lot to discuss: what’s happening nationally, what democracy needs from us in this moment, and how the election result, and its aftermath, are playing out in our communities.

Despite all this focus on what divides us, Rural Oregonians know that at the end of the day, neighbors show up for neighbors, which is essential to our communities’ survival and health. Not only that but also, there is SO much that we can agree on. The vast majority of us want ourselves and our loved ones to be safe, happy, and able to live with dignity.

We don’t know exactly what’s coming after the election, but we’ve been running scenarios with the ROP network of Human Dignity Groups to plan for an array of outcomes as best we can. Regardless of what happens, we will need to gather with our people locally and statewide to assess our situation, take a collective breath, and determine how to move next.

For these reasons and more, we’ve gathered some of our wisest ROP elders and movement friends, Suzanne Pharr and Scot Nakagawa, for Meeting the Moment: A Post-Election Gathering on November 7th from 6-7:30 PM PST. You can register to join us on Zoom. Suzanne and Scot each bring decades of experience tracking and organizing in response to the Far Right and growing authoritarianism.

Registration link:
rop.org/post-election/?emci=e866734e-1696-ef11-88ce-000d3a98fa6b&emdi=a7856351-3a96-ef11-88ce-000d3a98fa6b&ceid=14377292

Suzanne Pharr is an organizer and political strategist who has spent her adult life working to build a broad-based, multi-racial, multi-issued movement for social and economic justice in the United States. At the center of her every effort is the question, “How can we make it possible for everyone to live as a whole person, to have self-determination, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to have access to material necessities as well as joy?” Scot Nakagawa is a 42-year veteran of social and economic justice advocacy and has served as an organizer, political strategist, and social movement analyst in the struggle against authoritarianism and for equitable and inclusive democracy since 1988. He is the current Director of the 22nd Century Initiative, a national action and strategy hub supporting efforts to defeat authoritarianism and build democracy.

In the past three decades, the ROP network has shown that we will work together to keep each other safe. We will work together to protect what we have. And we will work together to build what we need. We would love to see you on November 7th to figure out what that looks like post-election. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out to ROP for support around voter intimidation, political violence, or (in better news) bringing newly active folks into your human dignity group!
