The Coaster Theatre Playhouse Celebrates 50 Years of Community Theatre

The Coaster Theatre Playhouse Celebrates 50 Years of Community Theatre

Dust off your platform shoes, grab your cool threads and head to the Coaster Theatre Playhouse on Wednesday, June 29 to celebrate the theatre’s 50th birthday with a day of entertainment, groovy tunes from the 1970s, costume contest and silent auction.

The open-house party runs from 2 to 5 p.m. in the theatre’s courtyard and from 6 to 9 p.m. in the theatre.

In 1972, Maurie Clark, purchased The Coaster building, which housed a roller skating rink, and, after an extensive remodel, presented Cannon Beach with the Coaster Theatre Playhouse.

The Portland State University Summer Stock Company opened at the newly remodeled theatre on June 29, 1972. That winter, Cannon Beach residents, with D.K. Smith and Bill Steidel at the helm, put on the first community production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This began a tradition of producing community plays and musicals throughout the year for over the past 50 years. Generations of North Coast residents and visitors have participated on and off stage at the Coaster Theatre, often creating lifelong friendships and a few marriages.

In 2001, after Clark’s death, the Coaster Theatre became a nonprofit organization that continues to be dedicated to presenting live theatre and events that engage residents and visitors of all ages.

The Coaster Theatre is celebrating all year with a selection of shows and playwrights that are audience favorites. The theatre is also offering monthly special event concerts to celebrate this momentous anniversary. Details about the 50th birthday party, plays, musicals and special events are at coastertheatre.com

Upcoming shows and events at the theatre:
Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, July 6 – Aug. 6
Auditions for Gramercy Ghost, July 25 & 26
Clue: The Musical, Aug. 10 – Sept. 10

Treat yourself to a Massage & Sauna this weekend!

Submitted By: revolutionginger@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Well the sun finally came out this week and if you’re like me- you went outside to enjoy it.

But after such a long wet spring it’s easy to overdo it.

If you have sore muscles from hiking, biking, gardening or just living life outdoors- now is the perfect time to get some bodywork!

We have massage & sauna appointments from Thursday- Saturday at North Fork 53 Communitea Wellness.

Enjoy the beauty of the river and the gardens while your muscles get the love they deserve!

But don’t take my word for it!

Here’s a recent review:

Ginger hosts incredible and inspiring events! To get to relish in experiences for the body and the spirit (in my case, it was a kelp scrub with sauna time plus an intimate renewal ritual), AND in such a beautiful space, was a rare treat indeed. Every detail was though of. I felt safe and held and joyous the whole time. I left nourished, refreshed, and inspired!
The farm—the land and all of the interior spaces— are artful, warm, inviting, and just damn gorgeous. Ginger and Brigham have poured their heart and soul into this place. If you have a chance, go!

Katherine McDowell and Ben Killen Rosenberg

Katherine McDowell – Abstract Seascapes

“These prints have been selected from my “Lake Monotype” series. Started in 2008, this series contains over 450 original, one-of-a-kind prints inspired by Lake Michigan. This work is a celebration of my love for the colors and textures of nature. They are made by layering various colored printing inks onto a plexiglass plate with rollers, brayers and paintbrushes, then running the plate through a hand-cranked press with the highest quality printmaking paper. The term “monotype” means that only one print can be made so each one is unique.”

Ben Killen Rosenberg

“Where the Wonder Garden now is, the old Hoffman house used to sit. Studio space rented for $100 a month and for a time before its demolition, I had a small studio on the second floor. I come from a family of gleaners and artists so when there was a call to help clear out and take down the building, I showed up to see what might be salvaged. Between the floor and the subfloor, I discovered a vapor barrier made of large sections of movie posters and advertisements from the 40’s. Some were in remarkably good shape; all were large and in sections. The more I looked at them, the more I saw the stereotypes and unintended irony of the images for viewers now. The subtext intrigues me, and that’s true of all my work. These monotypes and monoprints are all inspired from these posters.”

Donna Miller Announces Run For City Council

Submitted By: dcmiller6677@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
“When the winds of change blow, some people build walls, and others build windmills.” (Chinese proverb)

My name is Donna Miller and I am announcing my candidacy for a seat on the Manzanita City Council. I have chosen to live in this wondrous location since 1990, working as a teacher for NeahKahNie School District for 20 years, then staying productive and involved in community based programs. Since retiring in 2011, I served as a leader in GardenBuds and Jr. MuddNicks, two organizations that exposed elementary children to the rewards of community service. I coordinated programs and events for the MuddNick Foundation, volunteered at Nehalem Care Center, Friends of the Library, Schmuck Foundation Tournament and Hoffman Center for the Arts. I currently am a host at the Hoffman Clay Studio and deliver meals for the Nehalem Bay Methodist Community Meals Program. I am a strong believer that it really does take a village to build a thriving community.
Why am I choosing to run for city council at this time? Manzanita, where I plan to live out my life, is changing quickly, losing its feel of community. There is a great need for a proactive council to study and guide this transition, to protect its citizens, plan to keep the environment healthy and encourage sustainable growth. Too many of the decisions being made benefit developers at the expense of residents. We need a better balance.
A strong council will recognize the need to break down walls of doubt and closed- mindedness, instead harnessing the thoughts, ideas and experience our citizens have to offer to bring this community back together.
I hope to help build the windmills to generate this energy!
Donna Miller

Deb Simmons Announces Run For Mayor

Submitted By: Daslunas@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
Manzanita residents are tired of not being heard. They want fact-based information to undo the numerous and serious problems facing this city that means so much to all of us. They want and need services that address the specific needs of a community with a median age of 65.5 years.

As a long-time Manzanita resident, I have these same desires. And I believe that it’s time for us to step up and make positive change happen. For these reasons, I am announcing that I will run for mayor in the November election. As a retired educator and former business-owner who has lived in this area since 1992, I would like to implement policies with advisory support and input from the community.

I envision Town Hall Meetings where residents ask questions and receive thoughtful answers. I envision a long-term plan that includes sidewalks and bike paths. I envision affordable housing that brings in a vibrant work force. I envision a Planning Commission that is well-trained to maintain the natural characteristics of our neighborhoods defined by our founding fathers. I envision a return to the Comprehensive Plan, a compassionate plan that is the law of our city — with clear policies to support our future plans. I envision a city where residents’ needs outweigh those of special interests. I envision a balanced view that looks ahead ten and twenty years, and addresses environmental concerns as well as how we want our neighborhoods to be developed, serviced and maintained. I envision a balanced budget that is sustainable.

I look forward to discussing your concerns over the next several months and sharing my views with you. It’s time the residents’ voices are heard.

Thank you,
Deb Simmons
