September 1-25 | 1:00-5:00pm
Thursdays through Sundays
Opening Reception | September 3, 2022 | 3:00-5:00pm
Hoffman Center for the Arts | 594 Laneda Avenue | Manzanita

Land and water and sky form the basis for our experience on the Earth. Over the past three-plus decades, I’ve been painting more or less abstractly in encaustic and collage. And all this time, even since the mid-70s, I’ve also been painting landscapes in oil paints from observation, en plein air.

For this show, we’ve chosen plein air paintings done on the Oregon coast and two from Puget Sound. Most are fairly recent. One painting is from 2001: I had read a book about Monet’s method of painting on the edge of moment-by-moment seeing. To try this out, I rented a shack of a cabin in Oceanside and painted every day from the porch while a storm raged.

I Will Give You a Seat at the Table

Submitted By: jennifer@mayerlecompany.com – Click to email about this post
It has been three months since I declared my candidacy for a city council position in Manzanita. What a pleasure it has been spending the summer meeting and listening to residents. Be it pulling weeds at the library or Lower Nehalem Community Trust (LNCT); walking with citizens in hiking groups or on the beach; meeting with concerned citizens individually or in groups; or interactions at the Manzanita Farmer’s Market, post office, or grocery store, I have listened to your concerns. I have also met with our city manager, neighboring towns’ city managers, and past local office holders, learning from each and every interaction how to be effective and inclusive in city government.

I may be a bit old-fashioned, but I believe in people and meeting people face-to-face. I’m not a Facebook guy who argues and attacks people I don’t know. We all live here, we all care about this place, and we can all treat each other with respect and dignity.

I believe the role of a councilor is to be informed, seek community input, and be willing to make and implement decisions. Sometimes, that takes compromise. Sometimes, it takes implementing a policy and then reassessing and tweaking it as necessary. It never means failing to listen or failing to understand your constituents.

Like any serious candidate, I have studied Manzanita’s comprehensive plan and charter, our zoning ordinances, and attended council, planning and budget committee meetings. We all know that the comprehensive plan needs updating to reflect the desires of residents. We all know that we need budget diversification, which is critical to our future.

There are many reasons to be optimistic. We have a city manager who has changed the transparency and accountability of our city council and who actually encourages citizen input. We will have a new mayor excited to lead. In a week, we will have a newly appointed city council member. Changes are afoot. I believe I can continue to build on these positive changes and make a difference for the residents of Manzanita.

While I have no prior government experience, I do have 30 years of experience as a medical professional, evaluating, diagnosing, and treating complex problems. I’d bring this contribution to the team and use this as my starting point in bringing about a positive change in this diverse and challenging community. The problems we face are complex but not unsolvable.

From listening, researching and asking the tough questions, here’s what I’ve repeatedly heard and witnessed: Manzanita is at a tipping point, where a fresh perspective is vital to its future. The community is yearning for a new approach to governing—one that’s willing to challenge conventional wisdom and ask difficult questions that have been ignored in the past.
I’m Brad Mayerle, running for Manzanita City Council. I will give you a seat at the table. I welcome the opportunity to meet with you face-to-face and listen to your concerns and ideas. Feel free to contact me via email, text or give me a call.

NCRD/ NES School Swim Program Status Clarification

NCRD/ NES School Swim Program Status Clarification

There has been a lot of conversation about the future status of the School Swim Program out in the community and on social media over the last month or so. NCRD has been inundated with questions from concerned parents and long-time community residents who have heard there are changes coming to the program.

We want everyone to know, it is not the end of the School Swim Program!

When school resumed in person this past year, after being remote the prior year due to the pandemic, there were some changes made to the swim program to meet COVID protocols. One major change was that instead of all students K-5 receiving weekly classes throughout the entire school year, we had grades 4/5 in the fall, 2/3 winter term, and K/1 in the spring. So, this gave the students 10-11 classes for the year as compared with the traditional 33-34 classes.

The School District has made the decision to continue with that abbreviated class schedule moving forward. They have put out a public statement explaining their reasons for this decision. If circumstances change in the future NCRD would welcome the opportunity to restore the traditional year long swim education classes for all students.

NCRD continues to be dedicated to its mission, and to carrying on the original mission of the school district, when the school board voted unanimously in 1929 to build the Pool, to teach every child in the community how to swim.

Mark Kuestner for Manzanita City Council

Submitted By: MarkForCouncil2022@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
This is a pivotal point in time for Manzanita. We need to come together and focus to:

* Revise Manzanita’s Comprehensive Plan to meet community needs.
* Implement recommendations to minimize short-term rental impacts on residential neighborhoods.
* Identify alternative revenue sources to reduce the City’s dependency on visitors to fund basic city services.

Since moving to Manzanita 7 years ago, I’ve been studying how our City functions. I’ve witnessed our democracy in action: attended and participated in City Council, Short Term Rental, Budget and Planning meetings. I am passionate about our opportunity to act together now to shape Manzanita’s future while solving our immediate issues.

I am asking for your vote for a seat on the Manzanita City Council in November. Together we can work to create a framework to make certain that our town remains the wonderful place it is, while paying our bills well into the future.

Much needs to be done. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to it!

Why massage matters when it comes to getting in shape

Submitted By: revolutionginger@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Ginger didn’t believe me when I first told her this.

Today we got up early and hiked NeahKahNie Mountain before work. While we’re up there looking down on the clouds covering Manzanita, I asked her if she knew that getting a massage works you out almost as much as the hike we just did.

“Now you tell me!” she laughed. “Next time let’s wake up at 6am and you can give me a massage instead.”

Heading back down the trail we started talking about our health goals for fall and winter. As we both near 50, self care is something we talk about a lot. Mostly because we want to have enough energy to work, travel, snowboard and ride our bikes as much as possible.

I give and get lots of massages every month because I know how good it is for me and I see how much it helps my clients.

Most people think massage is just for relaxation but the truth is- a 90 minute full body massage equals taking a 3 mile hike!

Massage deeply exercises and moves your muscles while increasing your blood flow and mobility.

At the same time it lets your mind calm down- so you can let go of any emotional or mental stress you’re holding too.

If you’re looking for a way to stay healthy this fall and winter- getting regular massages will help!

Massage feels great, it boosts your energy, and best of all- it’s an exercise that you’ll want to do!

I have openings this Friday and Saturday if you’re ready.

Hoffman Gallery August Show

Hoffman Gallery Show August 2022
August 4-28 | 1:00-5:00pm
Thursdays through Sundays
Hoffman Center for the Arts | 594 Laneda Avenue | Manzanita
Featuring the works of ALXSw,
George Wilson, and Kopali Serna
Artists’ statement: ALXSw –

“Studying martial arts introduced me to Shodo and Zen traditional works. I’ve been deeply impacted by studying the use of empty space in the works of Zen Reishis. Additionally, the placement of an artist’s chops (the red seals) are the final balancer of a composition. Like most 2D arts the first works of a student of Shodo (the art of the brush) are precise, structured, predictable as identifiable kanji or phrases, as with realism in western painting; the orange in a bowl is predictably recognizable. There is no strain or inquiry required to extract any particular meaning.”

Artists’ statement” George Wilson –

“I paint watercolors, soaking the paper, sometimes on both sides and applying washes of color and tone wet on wet to create atmosphere and form. As the paper dries I add detail and structure using sketchbook and memory as source material. I like to paint the shapes of birds and sea stacks; the vertical staccato of old river pilings, the wake of ducks on the river.”

Artists’ statement: Kopali Serna –

“This series explores the story of a hearth that lay frozen for generations but has undergone a time of thawing and regeneration. I conceptualized the series from my perspective as a self-taught indigenous artist, at one point separated from my traditions through the impact of colonization, but now intuitively and joyfully rejoined.”

The gallery is free and open to the public.

Overdose Awareness Day

Submitted By: rachelkoljesky@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Please join us August 31st for International Overdose Awareness Day in the downtown Tillamook 2nd St Plaza from 4:30pm-6:30pm. The event is a way to unify our county and create a public space for conversations when it comes to overdoses within our community. The campaign aims to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind. There will be local resources and local stories of those in recovery shared as well as a NARCAN demonstration and a distribution of kits. We are hoping to encourage and empower our neighbors and Tillamook community members in their response to overdoses. The more conversations we have and the more people who are willing and comfortable enough to carry and administer NARCAN if needed, the less lives we will lose to unintentional overdoses.
At the resource tables we will have reps from:
1. Tillamook County Public Health’s Harm Reduction and Syringe Service Program
2. MAT programs from Tillamook County Community Health Centers, Adventist and Nehalem Bay Health
3. OHA’s Prime+ Peers
4. Tillamook Family Counseling Center prevention table
5. Dual Diagnosis Anonymous
6. Tides of Change
7. CARE
8. Helping Us Give and Get Support

Please join us for this family friendly event and don’t forget to wear purple!

Linda Kozlowski for City Council

Submitted By: Linda.Kozlowski@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
My name is Linda Kozlowski. I am writing to let you know that I am running for City Council in Manzanita.

I love Manzanita and am honored to have served the Manzanita community on the Council for 4 terms.

In my years on Council, I have seen a lot of change. One thing that remains constant is the passion people hold for Manzanita – its past and future.

My 3 priorities are:

Envision Manzanita
Manage growth effectively with guidance from our community. This includes the update of our Comprehensive Plan which will be one of our biggest projects in the next few years.

Budget Forward
Balance the budget while making thoughtful and systemic changes. This will require new funding strategies to help us reduce our dependence on short term rental revenue.

Focus on Livability
The quality of life in Manzanita matters to everyone. Continuing to manage short-term rentals, address workforce housing and create workspace for our city staff are all important to me.

If you already know me, you understand that I enjoy meeting people and talking face-to-face. Covid has hampered our ability to do that for the past few years. I would really like to hear from you. You can reach me via email at Linda.Kozlowski@gmail.com, or by phone at (503) 799-5550. You may also visit my website lindaformanzanita.com, where you can learn more about my experience over the past 20+ years.

Thank you and please vote in November.

Flower Bouquets-7 Days a Week

Submitted By: pattyrinehart@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Yes, since you asked, Friends delivers flowers. That is Friends of North County Recreation District will deliver flowers in the local area – you pay for the flowers and we deliver for free!
Friends has a flower bouquet booth in Downtown Manzanita next to the Little Apple. Fresh flowers are delivered to this booth daily. Our goal is to get them there by 9 AM, but you must remember we have artists doing the arranging and we might be a few minutes late. Dahlia’s are now in their prime, so expect lots of those. You ask also, what does a bouquet cost? $5, 10, $15, and up depending on what you want. We have those three price points available 7 days a week and if you want something more expensive we can do that too. Don’t forget the Magical, Manzanita, $5 Monday where most, if not all bouquets are $5. You need to hurry if you want one on Monday as they go quickly. If you get to our booth in Manzanita, take a few minutes to look at the sign which shows our Fall planted, spring blooming bulbs-plus both amaryllis and paperwhites. Price sheets are attached to the reader board. Don’t want flowers, but want to support Friends, send checks to Friends of NCRD, PO Box 511, Nehalem, Or. 97131. We’ve already raised over $2,500 to support programs and projects, but we need to raise twice that amount . We do appreciate your help-especially helping the youth in our community. Many Many Thanks!
