Advent Concert

Thursday, December 15 at 6pm, at St. Catherine’s

Join singer-songwriter Deb Montgomery for a quiet, early evening of music and candles: a kind-of-sort-of Advent Concert. Think house concert in a church. St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church is sweet and warm, open, inclusive, and welcoming.

“Montgomery’s music has been compared to many other talented musicians, from Natalie Merchant to Neil
Young. These are great comparisons, and Montgomery is an excellent storyteller. Her music is glorious in
its ability to make you cry, to make you feel, to make you find hope again.” — Beat Media

Deb has performed for many years—with and without a band—in Seattle, Toronto, Chicago, and New
York City. She recently relocated to Manzanita. You can find her music on iTunes and Spotify, or listen
to her albums here: debmontgomery.com and debmontgomery1.bandcamp.com/album/the-heart-of-it.

Pet Healing Services

Submitted By: Christy@cosmichealingnw.com – Click to email about this post
Hello BBQ!

In case you haven’t heard, I have opened up my schedule to include more time for energy healing for your beloved pets. I have certifications in many different animal healing modalities and mostly use a blend of reiki, crystal healing, and sound to help your animal overcome emotional distress or physical pain and illness. I have been having great results, sometimes in just one session. I work with dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and just about any kind of animal. Some common conditions I can help with are emotional distress, stress and anxiety, aggression, pain, and other physical ailments like digestion and aging issues, which can lead to behaviors that are distressing for you both. Most recently, I worked with a dog who was attacking a new dog who joined the family, and after several sessions he has stopped, and they now play together. I worked with another dog who had separation anxiety from being in a kennel and was exhibiting visible signs of distress and trauma, and is now back to her happy self. And I worked with a horse who was having physical pain from past injuries and stopped eating, he is now more at ease and eating normally again, enjoying extra carrots. Please let me help! Call, text or email me at Christy@cosmichealingnw.com or (503) 800-1092 for more information or to schedule. Thank you!
Blessings of health and wellness to all!

Hoffman Gallery December Show

Submitted By: HoffmanArtsNews@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
HOFFMAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS GALLERY SHOW IN DECEMBER WILL FEATURE MIXED MEDIA PAINTINGS BY DENNIS WORREL, MELISSA YOUNG, AND A COASTAL TEAPOT SHOW.

Dennis Worrel is a painter and printmaker living on the northern Oregon Coast. He worked as a soil scientist for over 35 years studying forest and desert landscapes across the western U.S. He is a founding member of Arts Accelerated and a member of Print Arts Northwest. For this show, Worrel painted and drew over botanical dye prints created by fellow artist and partner, Christine Harrison. In this series, Worrel calls attention to the natural world around us, encouraging connection and exploring our spiritual force of nature.

Melissa Young’s mixed media work will also be on display. Young is drawn to figure and portrait sketching, particularly working with the female form, as well as art journaling. Featured in this show, titled Time Will Tell, is a series of mixed media portraits inspired by the artist’s maternal grandfather’s family photos and history.

Additionally, we will exhibit a variety of local artists in a Teapot Show. The show was born from a desire to feature the incredible talent of our coastal artists. All the teapots will be functional, and you can expect a wide range of styles, shapes, and a variety of techniques.

We invite you to view art December 2 through 23, Fridays through Sundays from 1-4 pm. An artists’ reception will be held 2-4 pm on December 3 during which some of the artists will speak about their work and answer questions. The not-for-profit Hoffman Center for the Arts is located at 594 Laneda Avenue, Manzanita, Oregon.

SUMMARY
Part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, and her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”

Hemingway at the Beach: Writers Read Celebration Asks What He Would Say

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Suppose novelist Ernest Hemingway arrived at the Oregon coast and wanted to write about his experience in a maximum of 600 words. What would he write?
This year’s Writers Read Celebration, sponsored by the Cannon Beach Library, asks that question with the theme, “Hemingway at the beach: What Would He Say?”
Writers of all ages from all areas are invited to consider how or what Hemingway would say while at the beach. All written formats will be considered (essay, story, poetry, haiku, script, etc.) Authors are limited to three
entries with a 600-word maximum per entry. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 20.
A panel of volunteer judges will select 10 to 12 works to be read by their authors either in person or online during the celebration March 10 in the library.
Hemingway wrote about his experiences using as few words as possible, and his novels and short stories have become classics. The Writers Read Celebration offers an opportunity to have fun with this writing style in any form; the piece can be serious, whimsical, tongue-in-cheek or thoughtful.
Submissions will be accepted by email (info@cannonbeachlibrary.org) or by mail (P.O. Box 486
Cannon Beach, OR 97110), though email is preferred.
Submissions should be in Word or PDF format and include a cover letter with the writer’s name, email
and phone number. Please do not include the author’s name or contact information on the entry
document so authors remain anonymous during the judging process.
The NW Authors Series Committee sponsors monthly author presentations and other events at the
Cannon Beach Library. This is the fifth year of the Writers Read Celebration. Previous themes were:
“Life on the North Coast,” “The View from the North Coast,” “Pandemic” and “Recovery?.” Writers Read Celebrations on Zoom from 2022 and 2021 are available for viewing on Cannon Beach Library’s website.
