Response to Manzanita Financial Priorities

Submitted By: Tinnindeb@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Confusion. Fear. Half truths. In today’s world, we have seen these tactics used more and more. We have experienced the lies and half-truths said over and over until they become ‘fact’.

Recently, Randy Kugler threw out a bunch of numbers with little or no references. He mixes the Water Operating Funds and the General Funds which are operated separately with revenue received and cost outlays. He raises the fear of a water rate increase but fails to say that the last rate hike was in 2014. Nor did Mr. Kugler say that Cannon Beach is currently reviewing their water rate increases again with increases in 2018, 2021 and 2022. Nehalem just raised their water rates.

Cannon Beach Public Works Director Karen La Bonte said Tuesday: “As you know, our last rate increase for water and wastewater was March 20, 2018 which was three years ago. In order to keep up with the cost of maintenance on our infrastructure it is important that the utility rates stay on par to support those costs. Without doing periodic rate increases we can’t accomplish that.”
Kathleen Stinson, The Gazette June 4, 2021

He fails to tell you that the Manzanita water spending project is over a 10 plus year planning cycle. Nor did he mention that Cannon Beach has the same challenges with their water system infrastructure. (You can read more about Cannon Beach’s struggle with the cost of their water system infrastructure and the costly delays in decision making.)

Mr. Kugler goes on to say, ‘Total expenses to date to acquire the property and years of consultants and other professional services is now in excess of $2.1 Million.’ But he confuses it with throwing all the numbers together of land purchase with consultants and professional services. The land is a valuable asset, one of the last large parcels of land in the city limits. And we all know that prices for real estate have continued to increase since the City purchased the property in 2017.

Mr. Kugler goes on to say that Cannon Beach is getting a City Hall and Police Station for $1.2 million. Really?

“The City Council, during a meeting Tuesday night, authorized the city to borrow $4.6 million for the project, which is expected to cost $5.5 million. Lodging taxes will be used to pay off the loan.”
Nicole Bales, The Astorian February 2, 2022

As Mr. Kugler states, ‘It has been pointed out that the remodel of the CB Elementary School is not currently being planned for critical emergency services that need a class 3 or 4 seismic structural rating.’ This is because the old Cannon Beach school sits in the tsunami zone on Ecola Creek which feeds into the ocean. Their emergency and operating services will be washed away when the multimillion dollar building collapses.

Cannon Beach, like most towns, needs funding. They just put in play a 5% food and drink tax. This is in addition to the Transient Lodging Tax they make off of all those hotels. Mr. Kugler states without any facts that Manzanita will not receive any grants for the water system work. Based on what Mr. Kugler?

Large public capital outlay projects are always a challenge and the Manzanita project is no exception. Manzanita is looking at a similar self-funding strategy for the city facilities which in large part is funding driven by the Transient Lodging Tax, putting the tax burden on tourists. For us old timers, how many ballots cast before we built our fire station, water treatment plant or, even approving city budget funds for sidewalks on Laneda. More recently, we saw Seaside schools and Gearhart needing facilities but experiencing similar challenges at the ballot box.

It is time for Manzanita to tear down that old dilapidated eyesore of a structure, sitting at Underhill Plaza. Utilize the land for a smaller but more usable footprint city hall that reflects the beauty of our town. Put together a plan for land use for the community that offers worker housing (Manzanita Council just approved a tax abatement program with Tillamook County to help with taxes.) and a park for our Farmers Market and other community gatherings. Be a part of the conversation on August 29. (Go to the Manzanita website to sign up.)

Why massage matters when it comes to getting in shape

Submitted By: revolutionginger@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Ginger didn’t believe me when I first told her this.

Today we got up early and hiked NeahKahNie Mountain before work. While we’re up there looking down on the clouds covering Manzanita, I asked her if she knew that getting a massage works you out almost as much as the hike we just did.

“Now you tell me!” she laughed. “Next time let’s wake up at 6am and you can give me a massage instead.”

Heading back down the trail we started talking about our health goals for fall and winter. As we both near 50, self care is something we talk about a lot. Mostly because we want to have enough energy to work, travel, snowboard and ride our bikes as much as possible.

I give and get lots of massages every month because I know how good it is for me and I see how much it helps my clients.

Most people think massage is just for relaxation but the truth is- a 90 minute full body massage equals taking a 3 mile hike!

Massage deeply exercises and moves your muscles while increasing your blood flow and mobility.

At the same time it lets your mind calm down- so you can let go of any emotional or mental stress you’re holding too.

If you’re looking for a way to stay healthy this fall and winter- getting regular massages will help!

Massage feels great, it boosts your energy, and best of all- it’s an exercise that you’ll want to do!

I have openings this Friday and Saturday if you’re ready.

Needed Triple Axle Boat Trailer Week of Sept 19

Submitted By: Calvin.Noling@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I have a 29-foot Seaswirl Striper in a slip in Garibaldi that I need to move to/from Greg’s Marine – ¾ mile each way on the road – to have some work done. Do you or someone you know have a boat in the water with the 3-axle bunk trailer sitting idle? I would like to rent the trailer from you for the week of September 19 – no tow vehicle necessary since Greg’s has a tow vehicle. I will pick up/return the trailer from your home or trailer storage location, and take good care of it while I am using it. Thank you.

Hoffman Gallery August Show

Submitted By: HoffmanArtsNews@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Hoffman Gallery Show August 2022
August 4-28 | 1:00-5:00pm
Thursdays through Sundays
Hoffman Center for the Arts | 594 Laneda Avenue | Manzanita
Featuring the works of ALXSw,
George Wilson, and Kopali Serna
Artists’ statement: ALXSw –

“Studying martial arts introduced me to Shodo and Zen traditional works. I’ve been deeply impacted by studying the use of empty space in the works of Zen Reishis. Additionally, the placement of an artist’s chops (the red seals) are the final balancer of a composition. Like most 2D arts the first works of a student of Shodo (the art of the brush) are precise, structured, predictable as identifiable kanji or phrases, as with realism in western painting; the orange in a bowl is predictably recognizable. There is no strain or inquiry required to extract any particular meaning.”

Artists’ statement” George Wilson –

“I paint watercolors, soaking the paper, sometimes on both sides and applying washes of color and tone wet on wet to create atmosphere and form. As the paper dries I add detail and structure using sketchbook and memory as source material. I like to paint the shapes of birds and sea stacks; the vertical staccato of old river pilings, the wake of ducks on the river.”

Artists’ statement: Kopali Serna –

“This series explores the story of a hearth that lay frozen for generations but has undergone a time of thawing and regeneration. I conceptualized the series from my perspective as a self-taught indigenous artist, at one point separated from my traditions through the impact of colonization, but now intuitively and joyfully rejoined.”

The gallery is free and open to the public.

Overdose Awareness Day

Submitted By: rachelkoljesky@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Please join us August 31st for International Overdose Awareness Day in the downtown Tillamook 2nd St Plaza from 4:30pm-6:30pm. The event is a way to unify our county and create a public space for conversations when it comes to overdoses within our community. The campaign aims to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind. There will be local resources and local stories of those in recovery shared as well as a NARCAN demonstration and a distribution of kits. We are hoping to encourage and empower our neighbors and Tillamook community members in their response to overdoses. The more conversations we have and the more people who are willing and comfortable enough to carry and administer NARCAN if needed, the less lives we will lose to unintentional overdoses.
At the resource tables we will have reps from:
1. Tillamook County Public Health’s Harm Reduction and Syringe Service Program
2. MAT programs from Tillamook County Community Health Centers, Adventist and Nehalem Bay Health
3. OHA’s Prime+ Peers
4. Tillamook Family Counseling Center prevention table
5. Dual Diagnosis Anonymous
6. Tides of Change
7. CARE
8. Helping Us Give and Get Support

Please join us for this family friendly event and don’t forget to wear purple!

CHECK OUT ABSENT SENATOR RON WYDEN

Submitted By: dixiegainer@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Ron Wyden has been in the Oregon Senate since 1996. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1981 until 1996. 41 years as a representative of Oregon. He has three homes – doesn’t spend much time here. We need a senator that lives in Oregon to represent the people of Oregon.

The scandal: His wife took a PPP – That is the Paycheck Protection Program – loan of 2.7 million dollars to keep the employees of her bookstore on the payroll. She took the 2.7 million dollars and laid off 180 employees. She did not rehire them. The loan was forgiven. Isn’t that slick?
