I’ve always loved her voice and her songs. They are full of emotion and a wild hopefulness that love will conquer all.

We only sell 20 tickets to these intimate outdoor shows and they are always magical.
100% of proceeds go to the artist. It’s our way of supporting live music after the pandemic made it so hard for artists to perform.

Lucy Brook is turning 80 on the 25th of this month, Emily Dana is turning 70 on the same day, Lynn Levering is turning 70 on the 24th (it turns out she won’t be able to be there).
The idea has been born to have a joint birthday party, along with any other Libras who are having a 10-year birthday. It will be outside at the White Clover Grange on Sunday, September 25th. The weather prediction for that day is SUNNY. This will be a traditional North Coast birthday party, where everyone brings something to eat and drink.
Also please bring a chair, your own dishes and silverware.
Also, we three are moving slower than once upon a time, so please come prepared to help with anything that might need to be schlepped!
Also, there will be an Open Mike, so those of you who are musically inclined, please bring your instrument!
And, finally, if you feel inclined to give any of us a birthday present, please make a contribution to the White Clover Grange.

I’m Brad Mayerle, and I’m a candidate for Manzanita City Council. I’ve been out and about campaigning since May, when I announced my candidacy, and I’m continuing to knock on doors and make myself available to meet with those of you in the community. For example, one of my recent blog posts explains the skill set that I’ve cultivated over the past 30 years as a small owner and medical professional and how that experience transfers well to that of being on council. Here’s an excerpt:
“As a medical provider, I was required to diagnose a problem, identify a treatment plan, educate the patient as to the treatment options, and finally implement treatment that was deemed appropriate by all. I did this day in and day out…for 30 years. It was often challenging, but it was gratifying to see a patient leave my office happier and healthier from the process. This same methodology can be used to identify and assess the city’s challenges, identify potential solutions, communicate with the community, and create solid policy.
Being a business owner also requires listening, education and compromise. As the owner, I ultimately made the decisions. However, there were a host of others involved. I had an office manager, advisors (accountants, attorneys), staff, and suppliers, all of whom weighed in on what was best for the practice and my patients. It could be compared to working with a city manager, planning and budget committees, constituents, and outside experts. In addition, I had to ensure my business was compliant with specific standards…not much different from council members complying with state, county and federal policies in their decision-making.”

There are many threads that make up the fabric of “livability”. The challenge facing us is to create ordinances, rules, and laws that make sense, are realistic, are legally enforceable and will have impact for today and the future.
Livability has been on my mind as I wrapped up two of my larger volunteer commitments for the summer: I coordinated staffing the Master Gardner booth at the Manzanita Farmers Market and helped coordinate the amazingly successful, 3rd annual Hoffman Center’s Wonder Garden plant sale fundraiser. Both of those activities require months of planning and coordination of volunteer teams in addition to hours of hands-on work. Both focus on making our corner of Tillamook County beautiful, healthy and green. Both bring me great satisfaction and are a visible indication that what I am doing makes a difference in Manzanita and the larger community.
I’ve been a gardener all my life and greatly appreciate the natural beauty of our North Coast. I’ve been very involved in the design and upkeep of the Hoffman Wonder Garden on Laneda Ave. I can envision a similar park-like setting at Underhill Plaza as part of our new City Facilities: the Farmers Market on Friday evenings, concerts on Sunday afternoons, community gardens to grow fresh foods, and families enjoying outdoor picnics any day of the week. To me, parks and nature are a critical component of what livability means.
We have opportunities to shape the future vision of the Underhill site by attending public meetings with the project team and completing surveys on the City’s website. Join me and take advantage of those opportunities to let your voice be heard.
In future posts, I want to share the thoughtful comments I’ve heard about all aspects of “livability” and explore the actions that we can take to improve and protect our town.
