8th Annual Holiday Bazaar: Dec. 1,2,3 + 9,10 in Cannon Beach

Submitted By: tolovanaartscolony@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
The Tolovana Arts Colony’s Holiday Bazaar returns the first two weekends in December. Shop December 2nd-3rd & 9th-10th. Plus: Opening Reception Party on Friday, December 1st from 5:30-7:30PM

Why shop online or brave the big box stores when you could shower your loved ones with one-of-a-kind, locally made gifts that support your community?

Choosing The Tolovana Arts Colony’s annual Holiday Gift Bazaar is a no-brainer–a lively and meaningful antidote to cold, corporate consumerism.

The Bazaar runs for two weekends, Dec. 2rd ,3rd & 9th, 10th, from noon to 5PM each day.

But wait… that’s not all!

The Opening Night Reception Party returns, Friday, December 1st from 6-to-8PM!

We’ll have hot food, drinks and sweets to go alongside all the fabulous items on offer at the Bazaar.

On display–and available for purchase–will be a stunning array of works from local artists and crafters including everything from jewelry to house wares, fine arts to clothing, snacks, beauty products and more. Indeed, there’ll be something for everyone. Surprises abound!

But be advised: some of these are one-of-a-kind items and many will be scooped up quick.

Besides offering some of the coolest, locally-made art and crafts around, gift buying at the bazaar provides critical support to local artists and crafters. Your purchases are a big deal–especially at this time of year.

So rather than adding to fuel to Bezos’s rocket, keep it in the community and shop with purpose!

For more information, visit tolovanaartscolony.org, email tolovanaartscolony@gmail.com or call 541-215-4445.

Tolovana Hall is located at 3779 S. Hemlock in Cannon Beach.

The article below gives a bit of a history about Gingerbread Houses.

GINGERBREAD HOUSES
The information and picture below were provided from the ABC Cake Shop. Abccakeshop.com Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The tradition of making decorated gingerbread houses started in Germany in the early 1800s. According to certain researchers, the first gingerbread houses were the result of the well-known Grimm’s fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” in which the two children abandoned in the forest found an edible house made of bread with sugar decorations. After this book was published, German bakers began baking ornamented fairy-tale houses of lebkuchen (gingerbread). These became popular during Christmas, a tradition that came to America with Pennsylvanian German immigrants. According to other food historians, the Grimm brothers were speaking about something that already existed.
In modern times the tradition has continued in certain places in Europe. In Germany the Christmas markets still sell decorated gingerbread before Christmas. (Lebkuchenhaus or Pfefferkuchenhaus are the German terms for a gingerbread house.) Making gingerbread houses is still a way of celebrating Christmas in many families. They are built traditionally before Christmas using pieces of baked gingerbread dough assembled with melted sugar. The roof tiles can consist of frosting or candy. The gingerbread house yard is usually decorated with icing to represent snow.
A gingerbread house does not have to be an actual house, although it is the most common. It can be anything from a castle to a small cabin, or another kind of building, such as a church, an art museum, or a sports stadium, and other items, such as cars, gingerbread men and gingerbread women, can be made of gingerbread dough.
In most cases, royal icing is used as an adhesive to secure the main parts of the house, as it can be made quickly and forms a secure bond when set.
In Sweden gingerbread houses are prepared on Saint Lucy’s Day. Since 1991, the people of Bergen, Norway, have built a city of gingerbread houses each year before Christmas. Named Pepperkakebyen (Norwegian for “the gingerbread village”), it is claimed to be the world’s largest such city. Every child under the age of 12 can make their own house at no cost with the help of their parents. In 2009, the people of Bergen were shocked when the gingerbread city was destroyed in an act of vandalism. A group of building design, construction, and sales professionals in Washington, D.C., also collaborate on a themed “Gingertown” every year.

“We mustn’t fall asleep on these dark thoughts.

Let us say instead our most tender prayers,

the first prayers of our heart. In the name of all

that is most dear to us, let us re-dedicate our

lives to the beauty we forget. In the name of all

that has been hurt, let us vow to love what we love

City of Manzanita: A response

Submitted By: judysugg@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Which part of Cara Mico’s writing on Manzanita’s City hall (Tillamook County Pioneer, 11/18) is distorted and biased? Quite a bit. I counted half a dozen inaccuracies, not to mention judgements without support. If this is supposed to be an article, then it fails. As an opinion piece with a confused timeline, innuendos, ‘facts’ without basis, and much hyperbole, it succeeds. The first paragraph contains at least five cliches (point of contention, deep divides, staunch opposition, fervent support, laying bare the challenges….) that make the writer’s take on the topic pretty clear. This is journalism?

Please do watch the city council work session she links to in her piece. There you will see the city government working towards completing a project that many in the city want. We want a safe, secure, workable building for our police and government. The work to get this is steady and collaborative. There have already been numerous discussions, public opportunities to express opinions, and revisions – and more is planned (please view the city website). Also, look at the document on the water rate changes and the amount that changes for an average homeowner. Check your facts and be honest about your intentions, Mico.
