MEET THE CAST OF FRANKENSTEIN: THE RADIO PLAY AND COME CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN WITH RIVERBEND PLAYERS OCTOBER 20th – 29th

At 10, Shay filled in for a sick friend in a play. She had one line, the audience laughed, and Shay has been on stage since. She has performed in theatre, improv, commercials, TV, radio, & videos in PDX & LA. Shay is now a personal story performer & coach through her storytelling group, Solo Speak. Shay lives in Nehalem with her partner Paul and their cocker spaniel named Rosie.

FRANKENSTEIN: THE RADIO PLAY is a chilling adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, brought to life through the power of sound and performance from the golden age of radio.

Join Captain Robert Walton and his crew as they become caught up in the story of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant scientist who creates a living being out of dead flesh.
But when the creature is rejected by its creator and the world, it sets out on a path of revenge that will bring death and destruction to all who cross it.

This radio play is full of suspense, horror, and thought-provoking themes. It is a must-see for fans of classic literature and vintage radio drama.

Cannon Beach Library Hosts ‘Blankets’ Graphic Novelist Craig Thompson

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Cartoonist and graphic novel author Craig Thompson will discuss his award-winning work during a NW Authors Series presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. The hybrid program will be offered in person at the Cannon Beach Library and online, available on the library’s website, at cannonbeachlibrary.org. Thompson illustrated and wrote the multiple award-winning autobiography, Blankets, which was named Time Magazine’s No. 1 graphic novel in 2003. Published in 20 languages, the memoir tells the story of a young man finding a first love and emerging from a rigorous fundamentalist Christian childhood with the confidence to express his own voice. The Guardian newspaper said of Blankets: “Quaint, meditative and sometimes dreamy, Blankets will take you straight back to your first kiss.” Thompson’s later books, Carnet de Voyage, Habibi and Space Dumplins, also were award winners. The artwork he created for the Menomena album Friend and Foe received a Grammy nomination for best recording package. Thompson was born in Michigan in 1975, and grew up in a rural farming community in central Wisconsin. As a child, he enjoyed the Sunday newspaper comics and comic books. He drew a comic strip for the college newspaper while attending the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County. In 1997, Thompson moved to Portland, where he worked for Dark Horse Comics until he turned his attention to his own work. His first graphic novel was the semi-autobiographic Good-bye, Chunky Rice, which also won several awards. The NW Authors Series hosts Pacific Northwest authors from September through May. The committee also sponsors the Writers Read Celebration, featuring writers who read original stories, essays, poems, etc. on a specific theme. The next Writers Read Celebration will be on March 22.

SCULPTURES ARE HIDING IN YOUR GARDEN!

Submitted By: ketzel.levine@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
If you’re a gardener, take a minute after reading this to take a good look at your garden and ask yourself this: how do my small trees and big shrubs add to the overall aesthetic of this space?

Some guesses here: they add weight, size, bulk; they flowered a few months back; their leaves are turning color; they feed wildlife; they distract from the neighbor’s house.

All those are important. Absolutely! But if you study your favorite specimens, whether maple, dogwood, Hinoki cypress, pine, whatever, you might also start seeing inherent, powerful shapes hiding among the branches and leaves.

And once you can discern those shapes, you might then use a few sharp tools and a whole lot of know-how to release the muscular, sinewy sculptures hiding in your garden.

Are you game? ‘Cause that’s where we’re going!

Join us this Saturday, 9am-3pm, for a day-long immersion into the ART OF ADVANCED PRUNING with the Wonder Garden’s favorite pruning instructor, Maryann Lewis.

Here’s what to expect:

We’ll spend the morning at a stunning Manzanita garden with choice trees and shrubs that have grown out of scale. Through give and take with Maryann, we’ll learn step-by-step how to ‘see’ the potential shape of certain plants and strategize pruning cuts to reveal their forms.

In the afternoon we’ll be unleashed into the Wonder Garden (under supervision!) and will work in teams on selected overgrown trees to restore their scale, enhance their shape, and bump up the Wonder in the WG.

Class space is limited to provide individual attention!

NCRD is about PEOPLE

Submitted By: babbles@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
POSTED IN BEHALF OF JACK BLOOM

The Local Option Tax for NCRD is not about the pool, it is about PEOPLE!

It is about a community that puts the value and quality of people’s lives over the costs of ordinary things. It is above all about a community history of demonstrated commitment to enhance its children’s quality of life through providing opportunities for growth and learning that is available in few other communities. It is about providing a means for its older citizens to confront their twilight years in such a way that ensures the dignity of the individual and their ability to not be a burden to their family, friends or society by maintaining their health both physically and mentally. It is about the constructive and creative courses provided by the NCRD Staff and Volunteers who maintain stewardship in all our behalf.

It is also about setting an example for our children of how important it is for each succeeding generation to renew their commitment to their community by providing the means for all us to grow and prosper, not just as individuals but as an extended family who recognize and maintain their commitment to each other.

NCRD is mute but eloquent testimony as to who we are, what we believe in and what distinguishes us from others – our demonstrated commitment to each other. NCRD helps make us who we are.

I encourage you to vote YES for the NCRD Option Tax.
