Earth Day Service Celebration at Elk Meadows Park

Get your hands in the dirt in celebration of Earth Day! We’ll be scotch broom busting all afternoon at Elk Meadows Park in Nehalem on Sunday, April 27th. Join us from 1:00p.m. – 4p.m. in celebration of the 55th global day of action on behalf of our planet for a family friendly stewardship event. All ages are welcome! Tools & gloves will be provided (or welcome to bring your own) by co-hosts Lower Nehalem Community Trust and Trail Keepers of Oregon.

Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for variable coastal weather. Parking is adjacent to the park and surfaces are gravel, wood chip and grass. This park is owned by the City of Manzanita and home to Elk, roaming Cougar and other wildlife. It is stewarded by the Lower Nehalem Trust with the help of the community.

Salmonberry Trail Coming to Wheeler This Summer!

Over a decade ago, the Salmonberry Trail was a brainchild of two Tillamook County moms looking for a place for their children to ride bikes and the family to take walks. They envisioned the Tillamook Bay Railroad conversion to a shared biking and hiking trail. And that vision is finally becoming a reality in bits and pieces.

Wheeler is slated to build a demonstration section of the trail this summer. Our neighbor to the south, Rockaway Beach, is preparing to develop a much longer trail through their town. Over time, the trails are envisioned to “grow together” to create a continuous path to connect our communities, provide a way for kids to ride bikes to school, attract tourism, and get hikers and bikers off of 101 along the coast.

The 82-mile-long trail will eventually connect the coast to the valley and provide a recreational opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts. Work on the east side has begun and rail beds have been converted to trails that will connect to other regional trails such as Banks/Vernonia, a popular biking path west of the Metro area.

Salmonberry Trail Foundation Awarded $62,474 Grant to Support Trail
Development in Wheeler
Wheeler, OR —April 8, 2025 — The Salmonberry Trail Foundation has been awarded
a $62,474 grant through the 2024–25 Tillamook Coast Visitors Association (TCVA)
Tourism Facilities Grant Program. The funding will support the development of a
demonstration segment of the Salmonberry Trail in Wheeler—a project focused on
safety, connectivity, and community impact.
Located on the Port of Tillamook Bay right-of-way, the 1,800-foot gravel trail will parallel
the Oregon Coast Scenic Railway (OCSR) tracks. Developed in partnership with the
City of Wheeler, the Salmonberry Trail Foundation, and OCSR with input from the Port
of Tillamook Bay (PoTB), local neighbors, businesses, and the Lower Nehalem
Community Trust (LNCT), the trail aims to enhance pedestrian safety, encourage
downtown walkability, and serve as a model for future segments of the Salmonberry
Trail.
“This project is a small but powerful example of what’s possible when communities work
together,” said Gavin Mahaley, Communications and Development Director at the
Salmonberry Trail Foundation. “We’re proud to help make Wheeler more walkable,
connected, and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.”
In addition to the trail itself, the project includes a concrete platform just south of
Hemlock Street where Oregon Coast Scenic Railway (OCSR) riders can safely
disembark in Wheeler. Along the trail, interpretive signage will share the ecological,
geological, historical, and cultural significance of the area, including Botts Marsh, which
the trail overlooks, providing visitors with both a scenic view and a deeper
understanding of the area.
Funding for the grant was made possible through a partnership between Tillamook
County and the TCVA. In addition to TCVA’s generous contribution, the project will be
supported by in-kind work and community donations.
“This demonstration segment in Wheeler shows how a thoughtfully designed trail can
support local economies, protect sensitive environments, and create meaningful
experiences for both visitors and locals,” said Karen Matthews, Council President,
Wheeler City Council.
Trail construction is expected to begin in Summer of 2025, with the City of Wheeler and
the Salmonberry Trail Foundation managing the project and its future maintenance.

Celebrate Earth Week with Friends of Netarts Bay – Watershed, Estuary, Beach, and Sea (WEBS)

Join WEBS staff, volunteers and our partners for two back-to-back stewardship events on April 18th and 19th!

CAPE LOOKOUT STEWARDSHIP DAY – FRIDAY, APRIL 18
Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS will kick off the Earth Week celebration at Cape Lookout State Park with our second Stewardship Day of the season on Friday, April 18th, from 2:00pm-5:00pm. WEBS will once again be partnering with the park to offer opportunities to give back, maintain our natural areas, and restore healthy coastal landscapes. Volunteers, along with WEBS and park staff, will be planting a brand-new pollinator garden, to create habitat for native species and add a burst of color for visitors to enjoy. We will be planting Common Yarrow, Beach Daisy, Western Columbine, and more! Additional projects will include planting trees in the campground to replace those that did not survive from our original plantings, and continuing our work to keep the ivy at bay.
Activities are designed to accommodate a variety of skill levels. Families are welcome.

What to Bring:
Water bottle and snacks
Long pants and sturdy boots
Rain gear and layers to stay warm and comfortable working on the Oregon Coast
Work gloves, hand pruners, shovels, and trowels if you have them! (WEBS will also provide tools)

Our annual Earth Day Beach Cleanup is the next day, Saturday April 19th, from 9:30am to 1:00 pm. Spring offers the perfect opportunity for us to unite as a community and protect our coastal ecosystems by cleaning up litter and marine debris from our beaches. Join WEBS, SOLVE and partners as we kick off this year’s event with warm drinks on the deck of the Schooner Restaurant!

You’ll want to hear the fascinating story of the Cheese War, presented by the author of the book of the same name.

Marilyn Milne and her family experienced the “war,” which took place throughout the 1960s. A story not well known outside Tillamook County, yet it had a lasting impact, particularly in the Nehalem Valley.

Marilyn will be signing books at the event – be sure not to miss this fascinating presentation. Saturday, April 26, 3:30pm at North County Recreation District. Hosted by Nehalem Valley Historical Society.
