Gregory Lee Hightower

Gregory Lee Hightower
Gregory Lee Hightower, 72, of Manzanita, Ore., died April 15, 2025, at his home. He was in hospice care, due to the spread of a rare cancer that first appeared in 2013. His wife of 48 years, Kathie, and his dear friend Daric Moore, were at his side when he passed.
Greg was born Nov. 6, 1952, in Oakland, Calif. to Jack and Naomi Hightower. The family moved with his father’s civil service work for the military. They lived in Japan when Greg was young, and in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he graduated from high school.
Greg graduated from Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, Calif., in 1974. He was a member of Delta Tau fraternity. He completed two master’s degrees.
Upon graduation Greg was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Military Police and served 30 years. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2004.
A fan of the popular Lee Child book series about a fictional retired Army MP major named Reacher, Greg liked to say, “I AM Jack Reacher,” as he had in fact served as a commander with the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command (CID), as a major. Greg delighted in pointing out all the inaccuracies in the Jack Reacher books and movies.
Greg’s Army career included Military Police assignments, CID, and Civil Military Operations in Germany. He was the S3 Operations Officer for an MP battalion during the conflict in Panama, and in the UN Protection Force during the conflict in Bosnia Herzegovina.
Greg served as the Professor of Military Science at Oregon State University. He later worked at ROTC headquarters at then Ft. Lewis, Wash., with additional assignments covering a wide area of the United States, Guam, Tinian and American Samoa, providing Junior ROTC oversight.
After retiring from the Army, a life highlight for Greg was attending the Oregon Culinary Institute for two-plus years at age 63, graduating from both the culinary and the baking programs. His family and friends benefited greatly from those skills.
Greg met his wife Kathie in Germany in 1977, where she was also assigned as an Army lieutenant. They moved a total of 19 times in their nearly three decades of military life. With amazing foresight (i.e. luck), they bought property in the Manzanita area in 1984 and moved there fulltime in 2006, involving themselves in many community activities.
Greg and Kathie traveled the world — all over Europe, Mexico, Indochina, India, China, Russia, and Peru. Even the Republic of Georgia and Lithuania. These were not bucket list trips for the couple to check off. The Hightowers would immerse themselves in the places they visited — talking to people, trying every bit of traditional food and drink, and spending active time in nature whenever possible.
Particularly memorable were numerous week-long kayaking trips off a base camp boat in remote British Columbia with family and friends, and a week of biking much of the country of Liechtenstein, crossing into Austria and Switzerland.
Greg was one of a kind, especially for an Army officer. He talked to everyone to get their life story and could make anyone laugh — even in way-too-tense war zone situations. He made everything into a fun adventure, from a meal to a house project to a trip. He was proud of the fact that he could get just about anybody dancing on his kitchen “dance floor.” As numerous people have said, “Greg always made me feel welcome, seen, and heard, and that is something for men in our generation.”
Greg is survived by his wife Kathie, sister Anita (Gene) Inzer, sister-in-law Nancy Hotter, brother-in-law Joe Hotter, nephews Justin Trudeau and Paul (Liz) Trudeau and their children, goddaughter Mary (Kenny Trowbridge) Beougher, and nieces-in-law, Jessica (Scott) Hotter, and Jocelyn Hotter.
In lieu of flowers, and to honor Greg’s great love of rescuing cats, especially his feral Mr. Finn, and his love of feeding all birds and stray animals, the family requests donations to Animal Haven by the Sea at animalhavenbythesea.com, or in honor of Greg’s love of nature, a donation to the North Coast Land Conservancy at www.nclctrust.org.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Performing Arts Center of the North County Recreation District in Nehalem on Saturday, May 10, from 2 to 5 p.m.
For information or questions, contact Kathie Hightower at 503-739-1505 or kathiejhightower@gmail.com. She welcomes any stories people may have about Greg.

PROTEST IN NEHALEM THIS WEEK

Submitted By: pattyrinehart@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Join us in Nehalem for our PROTEST tomorrow, Saturday, April 26, between noon and 2 PM. Bring some layered clothing, water, a chair if you need one, and a can of food to donate to our local food bank. If you have a sign or a flag, bring them. We do have some extra signs. We want to keep this PROTEST against the government and the way it is treating people. With 125 people protesting last week we need that many people once again. And we need all generations to come. Bring your kids and your kids kids. Show up. The PROTEST has been very peaceful, yet we are making our rights known. Thank you all who came last week and we hope to see you again on many Saturdays to come.

The Nehalem Bay House, a former assisted living facility, closed abruptly during Covid and has been vacant since. The facility is now being repurposed into independent affordable senior housing, and we’re planning to start renovations in a few weeks. The property owner left behind a lot of furnishings, supplies and equipment that we will not need for the future use. We would love to donate as much of this as possible, and I’m reaching out with the hope that community members could use some of these items.

Attached is a link to a google photo album with images and below is a list of some key items we’d like to find a home for. We’re trying to avoid filling the landfill with the items that were left behind.

We will be holding an open house of sorts for anyone interested in stopping by Friday, April 25 from 10am to 2 pm. Everything is free! We will likely have an additional open house day (or two) next week.

The property is located at 35385 Tohl Avenue Nehalem, OR.

Cannon Beach Library to Host Poet and Artist Daniela Naomi Molnar

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
The Cannon Beach Library will welcome Portland poet and artist Daniela Naomi Molnar at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, for National Poetry Month.
This presentation won’t be livestreamed, but will be recorded and available to watch here later.
Molnar is a poet, artist and writer who works with color, water, language and place. Her debut book, CHORUS, won the 2024 Oregon Book Award for Poetry.
The book is described on Molnar’s website as a “celebration of language’s capacity to supersede bodily limits, mortality and existential loneliness. Daniela Naomi Molnar’s chorus encompasses violence, love, empathy, fear, a burning planet, a pandemic, heartbreak, desire, joy and grief. Rather than seeking resolution, these poems look through the lens of a fragmented self, dwelling in plurality, discord and harmony.”
She creates paintings using pigments made from plants, bones, stones, rainwater and glacial melt. Her writing develops alongside this work, with each practice influencing the other to form new ecologies.
Her work is the subject of a front-page feature in the Los Angeles Times, a PBS Oregon Art Beat profile, an entry in the Oregon Encyclopedia, and a feature in Poetry Daily.
Molnar’s art has been shown nationally, is in public and private collections internationally and has been recognized by numerous grants, fellowships and residencies. She founded the Art + Ecology program at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and helped start and run the backcountry artist residency Signal Fire.

WG PLANT SALE SATURDAY: PLANT PROFILE #6!

Submitted By: ketzel.levine@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Spread the word, bring a friend:

Hoffman Wonder Garden Plant Sale
Saturday, 4/26 10-12pm
Inside the Hoffman Center
(or if weather’s good, in WG)

Come June in the WG, everybody wants to know about the tall plant with the long waving arms that wears bold magenta flowers at its branch ends.

The shape of those flowers gives the game away: bottlebrush, which is both its common name and an apt description of its long, enduring blossoms. If you’ve got full sun and you’re looking for a show stopper, you’ll be delighted to know we’ll have a bunch at the sale.

At 6’x6’, whether you call it a big shrub or a small tree, Callistemon pallidus ‘Eleanor’ is a statement. For its size, we find it quite graceful if in an odd cattywampus way. We love that it’s evergreen with lovely light bark, creates THE most intriguing seed capsules and will not fail to please on the coast in the hottest spot you can give it.

Water? A bit through summer, not much.

‘Eleanor’ is one of the two bottlebrush we’re offering. The other wins for Most Outrageous Name: Callistemon ‘Wetlands Challenged Mutant’. No lie.

Our ‘WCM’ is only 2 years old but starting to pick up speed as it heads towards what we’re told will be a pillar of foliage and flower, reaching 7’ high but only 3’ wide. We can’t wait to see it!

For now, it’s a fine-textured and very tidy evergreen plant promising 4-inch long soft yellow flowers. Stop by the WG to check the mutant out, it’s in the middle of the garden by our commissioned metal sculpture from Indio Metal Arts.

Free quality packing materials

I receive meals shipped in quality packing that is sheets of bubblewrap with foil on both sides. It is good for cushioning delicate items and great for insulation. I’d like to see this material recycled. I will gladly deliver a supply to you in Manzanita, Nehalem or Wheeler monthly if you can use this. If you are outside the area, I will save it for you if you wish to pick it up in Manzanita. It is clean and in good condition, so it would be a benefit to businesses who ship fragile materials. Please email if interested. Thanks!
