Oregon is the only state where the governor is the head of the state’s educational system. She directs the Oregon Department of Education! The schools in Oregon have been failing the students for years. In Oregon you can graduate from high school without learning to read or write. Compared to the rest of the schools in the United States, Oregon ranks near the bottom in reading and math but near the top in monies spent on the school system! This has been going on for a long time in Oregon. The governor’s solution is to stop grading the kids, (so you can’t compare them) but rating them with assessments rather than end-of -the year testing. Sort of like Amazon ratings for products and services. So what she is communicating is that she doesn’t care if the kids learn or not or if they can compete with other kids or not. She just doesn’t want to look bad. That is what she has communicated with the public so far in her terms as governor. But now that there is an election she is starting to make noise about how she cares for students learning! Do you buy it?
