This will be the last mussel foraging class of the 2026 season! They won’t be back until spring 2027.

Experience Oregon’s rugged coastline through the lens of traditional and ecological mussel foraging in this hands-on, guided workshop set within the state’s dynamic tidepools. Led by forager and marine educator Alanna Kieffer, this immersive experience invites participants to connect deeply with Oregon’s intertidal ecosystems while learning to harvest one of the coast’s most abundant shellfish.

We’ll begin with an introduction to tidepool ecology, covering tides, wave action, and the intertidal zones that create ideal habitat for native mussel species along Oregon’s rocky shores. The workshop places a strong emphasis on sustainable mussel foraging, teaching ethical harvest techniques that protect both individual organisms and the broader ecosystem. Participants will learn Oregon’s seasonal regulations, limits, and best practices for minimizing impact while foraging responsibly.

On shore, we’ll explore safe handling, cleaning, and storage methods for freshly harvested mussels, along with simple preparation techniques that highlight their natural flavor. Participants will enjoy tastings and discussions around culinary traditions tied to mussels along the Oregon coast.
