What happens when the Oregon House representative you supported leaves the GOP because he saw that they only use their office to be performative for other performers?
What happens when your believed Elon Musk/DOGE would transform the US Government in 90 days, but then turned out to be accelerationist vandals)?
What happens when you’re a farmer and watch your rotting soybeans get evicted from the local grain elevator, unsold?
What happens when you believe you’re a “good” hispanic and it turns out MAGA hates you anyway?
What happens when it begins to look like ANTI-FAscist may actually be a form of self-preservation?
By now, we’ve seen a thousand of these “what happens when” scenarios, many falling under the heading of “FAFO.”
It’s not surprising then that locally we see frequent anarchic/conservative BBQ posters taking up a more eccentric and conspiratorial outlook.
There’s Dixie Darrow’s latest attack of her fellow community members for being “BBQ Marchers” for free speech —a demeaning simplification—while she herself points to the wisdom of Vladimir Putin’s messianic/slavic imperialist mentor, Aleksandr Dugin.
And dear Andy now points at so many distinct oppressive conspiracies that you need a spreadsheet running on a AI-ready 16-core gaming PC just to keep track of them all. He declares Peter Thiel to be fascist but then (apparently) spends a lot of his screen time looking at and sharing content from Thiel’s apocalyptic version of YouTube, rumble.com.
The dawn-of-realization phase of MAGA’s profound failure is going to be turbulent. And local folks will still be there regardless, somewhere along Highway 101, protesting.

NO KINGS National Protest Day
Date, Saturday, October 18
Time: Noon – 2 PM
Location: Manzanita (Highway 101 at Laneda Avenues)
North Coast Resistance will join millions across the United States for this significant event. Mark your calendar and invite your loved ones to participate!
Volunteer Opportunities: Safety & Security Team-for October 18th.
We need 8-10 volunteers to help with traffic safety, setting up and removing cones and ribbon, and assisting with crowd management. Volunteers will help keep everyone safe by encouraging attendees to stay on the west (beach) side of Highway 101 and by helping at the Manzanita Lumber Yard crossing.
4-6 volunteers are needed throughout the crowd to help as needed. Orange vests will be provided to help identify Safety and Security Team members.
If you are interested in joining the Safety and Security Team, please contact Patty at 503-368-6081. Thank you for helping keep our events safe!
Safety Training information: TRAININGS — No Kings.
Community Engagement
Protest Chant Contest: We’re looking for a unified, positive message to share with passersby during the protest-the people with the hand gestures. Ideas so far include “I love you” and “Wake up.” Let us know what you’d like our group to say—let’s keep it clean and impactful!
Looking Ahead: As the weather changes, we’re considering other community projects over the holidays and a letter-writing campaign. Share your ideas with us! We know everybody won’t want to subject to the weather.
Support the North County Food Bank
Please bring canned food, cash, or checks to donate. Every contribution goes directly to the North County Food Bank in Wheeler. Thank you to everyone who donates and helps fight hunger in our community!
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!
Contact for volunteering: Patty, 503-368-6081
In dixiedarrow@icloud.com post about protecting free speech, she mentions “BBQ marchers”.
I don’t know why she calls them “BBQ marchers”, which is not accurate. The name of the group is North Coast Resistance.
As administrator of the bbq, I post a lot of different things. Should everything posted be called “BBQ whatever”??????
Dixie, please give more thought to accuracy.
For the record, personally I am in support of North Coast Resistance, which has nothing to do with “BBQ marchers”

YES, many of us are concerned, because now and in the recent past, free speech has been suppressed. because of an event like the recent assassination of a very influential and nationally known and loved person. This event could and may bring about laws that put more limitations on free speech.
One law is the “PATRIOT Act,” which has been criticized for potentially chilling free speech. Limitations on speech can occur during wartime, and national crises, like “Covid”, and possibly now, with the assassination of Charlie Kirk!
Will this crime be used to put even more limitations on “free speech”? Was this crime committed just for this purpose? Was this crime done to create more rhetoric to further divide the American people? All of the above and much more probably. If groups can use this event for their own purposes they will!
“This is the lefts fault – their speech is full of hate and incitement!!! This is the rights fault – their speech is full of hate and violence!! PLEASE JUST STOP! ENOUGH ALREADY!
The modern legal test for restricting speech is
from Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969), and provides a much broader protection for speech. For speech to be restricted, it must be: “Directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action,” and”Likely to incite or produce such action”.
Unfortunately, in my opinion that looks like exactly like the situation we have here with the shooting of Charlie Kirk:
The good news is: A lot of Americans, even though they may not take part in any political process like voting, and may not even know the name of the current president, seem to be attached to the “free speech”clause in the bill of rights, and can get very emotional about it. Almost everyone cares.
Here is an interesting quote published today in the Oregon Catalyst: this is by Larry Huss
In the aftermath of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA we have witnessed two phenomena that should henceforth be burned indelibly into our psyche. First, that disagreement can turn into blind hate with only the slightest of encouragement. And second that both sides of the political spectrum will, in turn, embrace suppression of free speech.
Very Interesting comment !!
